Must see two breathtaking, beautiful and wonderous exhibitions - Singapore Stories Pathways and Detours in Art on level 2, and He Xiangning Ink Paintings on level 4. Awesome, refreshing with much to learn. Lives of the painters, in war, revolution and peace, shine through. Go twice. Restaurants are nearby. Photos by mobile phone are allowed. MRT City Hall. Changes your view, understanding of Singapore.
Whenever we are in Singapore our first port of call is always the National Gallery. Living in the U.K. as we do, we very rarely get the chance to see art from South East Asian artists and the National Gallery soon solves that problem. There are some wonderful exhibits in this magnificent building. Also, it is a cool retreat from the unrelenting heat of Singapore. A fact that is bourne out at weekends when the place is overflowing with Singaporeans cooling off. Take your time here, enjoy the building and the magnificent local art. Have a coffee or tea in one of the cafes. Just don't go at the weekend, it will be packed out.
The National Gallery Singapore is a nice place, and the building itself is very impressive and beautiful 🏛️ There are many artworks to see, and everything is well maintained and organized. However, personally, I found it a bit less exciting than I expected. Some exhibitions were interesting, but overall it didn’t feel very engaging for me. It’s still worth visiting if you enjoy art, but for me, it was just an average experience.
The space is massive and full of things to see. Even without major highlights, a full walkthrough takes two hours. I tried rushing through in one, but still missed several areas across its six levels (basement to 5th floor).
Quite a let-down really. Impressive building. I went along to see the Impressionist exhibition, today, a Saturday (I knew it would be busy). Firstly, the building sprawls, and the signage/navigation aids are terrible. The automated ticket kiosk was baffling, weird user interface and payment process flows, so I abandoned it and went to manual counter. It was then only AFTER I bought my ticket that I was told the Impressionist exhibition had timed entry and I was looking at a 55 minute wait. Somewhat convoluted process to go and get a time wristband, which I attempted, only to find out that I was in fact looking at a 1 hour 25 minute wait. So - I abandoned the whole project, and got a refund from the ticket desk. Very poor experience basically, terrible management of expectations, and very complicated and confusing system they had in place. This is not Smart Nation. It's Dumb Nation.
Was fortunate to visit the exhibition on "Into the Modern: Impressionism from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston". It was a Thursday afternoon well spent browsing the masterpieces on loan. As it was raining outside, the crowd was not big; so it was possible to enjoy the art pieces in relative quietness.
Fortunate to visit the "Impressionists" exhibition with many world famous pictures loaned from Boston Fine Arts centre, Absolutely wonderful
We had a standby reservation at Violet Oon, giving us 20 minutes to pop into the Gallery. We wanted to see the Monet and contemporaries exhibit, but at $25, it wasn’t worth just 15 minutes—so we checked out a few free exhibits instead. The building is stunning: two former government buildings linked by a walkway and covered courtyard.
I wanted to present an appreciation festive gift to tour guide M. Hui after attending her tour, (and training few days prior). however, her reaction was extremely loud, repeatedly saying she cannot accept it in front of the tour attendees. this extreme reaction was uncalled for, embarrasing and could have been more professional and discreetly managed. If she could not accept it because the museum staff were present, she could politely thank and decline. attended the tour last year. this is an late review.
