We really enjoyed our walk with Max and would recommend to anyone wanting more local experience with a good hint of history! Max was really knowledgeable and we explored places that we would never reach by ourselves (plus heard a few very interesting stories that you will not find in a tourist guide). I will definitely book with Max again the nexy time I’m in Shanghai:))

This was a very pleasant educational tour .eventhough we had a hard downpour. The guide is quite knowledgeable of his country. You will learn about China’s history and discover areas that you would have definitely overlooked. If you don’t like tourist traps this is the tour for you. However, because I had only one day to visit Shanghai I would have liked at least one wow factor feeling. Just so you know, he makes time at the end to present his souvenir packages which I thought was nice but if you don’t have time tell him ahead of time. Loved all the food stops on this tour, very well chosen! I suggest taking a taxi to the location because my GPS brought me to the wrong place with the given coordinates walking.

I can't recommend this tour enough. From the moment we met Max, it felt less like a guided tour and more like catching up with a local friend who just happens to know everything about his city. The flow was incredibly smooth, every stop had a story, and every bite of food connected to a different chapter of Shanghai's history. I didn't just eat — I understood. Max has this gift of making history feel alive and personal. 3.5 hours flew by, and honestly, I could have listened to him talk for another three. I'm already planning to come back with my family and friends so they can experience this too. What really touched me though — I ran into some language difficulties during my stay in Shanghai, and Max went out of his way to help, even outside of tour hours. That's not something a guide has to do. That's what a real friend does. I didn't just book a tour. I gained a genuinely kind, knowledgeable, and warm-hearted friend in this city. Thank you, Max. As we had only a few days in Shanghai this time (not our first time in Shanghai) I knew we needed to maximise our time so we book this half day tour with Max. And we are so glad we did. We traveled with our 15yr old son, so we all have diffeent interest. Max has curated a walk through the real Shanghai French Concession, woven with stories, exploration of different architectures and a visit to a antique market frequented only by local collectors. The explanations of aritfacts helped enhance following museum visits with greater understanding and appreciation of Chinese history and culture. The walk was highlighted with visits to Max's favourite eats. Despite the many dumplings we have tried around Shanghai, we'd never had the perfect and authentic shanghai dumpling, fried dumpling, onion pancake and Shanghai pork chop and mango dessert. Until now. Savouring the perfect examples of these was definitely our favourite part. Even though I speak mandarin, I'd never have found these. You can pack so much more value experience into half a day with a local guide as passionate about Shanghai as Max. Not only is he knowledgeable and communicates with excellent english, his responsiveness and patience was appreciated. When your holiday time is precious, you're in good hands with Max. To be honest, its like having a well informed and good friend in this city. The next time we visit Shanghia or surrounding cities (Suzhou/Hangzhou etc) we'll definately call upon Max to curate a memorable experience for us.

Max was an outstanding guide. Before our tour, he put together an incredibly thoughtful research packet covering breakfast options, Sichuan spices, and the local wet market, complete with prices in both RMB and USD, which made planning effortless. During the tour he was knowledgeable, organized, and happy to answer every question we had. His enthusiasm for sharing local culture really came through, and we learned far more than we expected. If you’re looking for a guide who goes above and beyond in preparation and genuinely cares about your experience, I highly recommend Max.

This is a Shanghai we wanted to see and taste. We would never have gone into these local restaurants on our own, as we wouldn’t have known what to order. The dinner tour was interesting, but the breakfast tour completely blew our minds because it was so different from what we are used to. And thank you, Max, for sharing insights into the daily lives of young Chinese families today. Highly recommended!

The tour with Max was fantastic and I learned so much about the history of Shanghai. Max gave a very unique and personal perspective because he grew up here. The sight and food he used were very well thought out. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone who wants a deeper understanding of Shanghai’s history.

First off: This tour is quite different from the "standard tourist tour." The excellent guide provides fascinating information and insights into Shanghai that you would never otherwise discover. The 4h tour began in an antiques store, where the guide used the items for sale to explain aspects of Shanghai's culture and history. From there, we continued through the French Consession. At various stops, the guide described the history of different parts of the French Concession and the local way of life, and the chosen locations and stories really piqued my interest. In addition to the cultural aspect of the tour, there was also a delicious portion with stops at various restaurants. These restaurants offered both traditional Shanghai dishes and refreshing drinks. The food was among the best I've had in China. I have nothing but praise for the guide: incredibly friendly, very accommodating, attentive, interested, and with excellent English skills. The guide created a friendly and calm atmosphere. He also always made sure that no one got lost. Furthermore, he took time between stops to have personal conversations and share a bit about his life. It was also interesting for me to talk to him because he is one of the younger guides I've had so far. We were a group of six people. For this group size, the tour and guidance were excellent. This was also thanks to the guide's wife, who also took numerous pictures of our group. All in all, I can highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Shanghai; it offers a wonderful, relaxed introduction to Shanghai's culture, history and cuisine. Greetings to you and your wife Max! The trip was very informative and entertaining at the same time. I've been living and working in the city for more than a dacade. Although knowing the area quick well, I was still impressed by the freshing information provided by Max. It was interesting to see the streets that I walk every day through different eyes. Max also did a great job in presentation. The trip was coupled with many documentary video clips that illustrating the local lifehood back in last century. Overall, the trip was very well organized and Max was very professional and caring to hit tour members. I would recommend the trip to whom want to know the cultural and historic side of the city.
