Excellent production, but definitely for children—and at a matinee, at that!
It was excellently produced, but the show is definitely for children! I usually enjoy musicals and this type of performance, but I wasn't particularly impressed. We had a specific issue with the lead actress (Mei), whose portrayal of a child felt quite forced. Additionally, the plot dragged on a bit. We also couldn't quite figure out the target audience for the show (we are 19 and 52 years old, and we shared the same opinion).

Boring and costly
I hadn't seen the film, so I came to this purely as a piece of theatre. The set design and special effects are beautifully done, but the plot is thin: no twists, no real adventure, just one quiet drama into another one. Anyone who grew up in the '80 would be very familiar with this plot. A visual treat, but not worth £150.

A must-see
An unforgettable experience and a must for all Ghibli fans. Actors, puppeteers, singer, and orchestra did a great job. Everything true to the original animated film.

Utterly Magical
My partner booked this show for me for my birthday and also gave me the gift of a V.I.P package as a complete surprise. Not only was our host Noah the nicest and kindest person but he helped make it an even more wonderful experience.
I think this is by far THE best production I have ever seen. The set design is utterly beautiful and the puppets were out of this world. I loved every second of this production and I was lost for words. My partner had never seen the film but even he agreed it was amazing.

Absolutely Wonderful
Drifting between magic, poetry and beauty.
We’re visiting London from Italy, and this experience was one of the most beautiful moments of our trip. My Neighbour Totoro is truly magical, poetic and full of beauty.
We were sitting in Row N (Seats 60, 61 and 62). Although not perfectly central, the view was great and the seats were absolutely perfect for enjoying the show.
A wonderful experience that we’ll remember for a long time. ❤️

Do not book seats Circle Row C (84 to 85) - Zero visibility for this specific production
Show: My Neighbour Totoro (5 stars for production, 1 star for venue administration):
Had the most disappointing experience at Gillian Lynn Theatre. As an avid theatre enthusiast, I have gone to a fair share of plays where I have booked seats with restricted views- these are usually cheaper and therefore more agreeable to my wallet when living in a city like London. However, the seats (Circle, Row C, Seats 85 and 84) marked as "restricted view" on their website should be marked as "no view" - especially for this particular production of 'My Neighbor Totoro', which has a deep stage design and visual effects that are fully front centric.
Seat nos. 82C to 83C had an extremely restricted view, but were comparably sufficient for enjoying the production, but in my opinion (and I hope the venue admin takes this review seriously) seat nos 84C to 85C should be completely omitted for this particular play because it is a waste of the time and effort put into this production by the insanely talented set designers and visual effects artists.
We were spoken to extremely rudely by the staff supervisor present at the time, who told us "you get what you pay for" when we flagged the issue with the seating. It is a shame, because the production itself was truly wonderful, and the sheer talent and skill displayed by the actors only brought into stark contrast how commercially motivated some theatre venues are, with regard to (in the case of our group) enthusiastic theatre lovers who, despite not being able to afford the same as those in the front rows, were made to feel inferior and ashamed for supporting a work of art. I do believe Miyazaki himself would have been dismayed by the sentiment with which we left the show -the magic and purity of his work destroyed by banal profit oriented theatre venues that prioritise capitalism over art.
Sharing an image of the view from my seat (Circle, Row C, Seat 85) during the interval. The only visible part of the stage is the front sliver, with the rest of the production and stage design completely obscured from view.

Great time with family
Amazing family experience. We sat in the circle at the side so was prepared to not have the best view but actually we had an amazing time and the view was perfect. I went with my 3 boys ages 5, 8 and 10 and they all loved it. It follows the film closely so my boys were excited as they knew what was coming next. Great performance by all, set design was spectacular and acting was amazing.

Fine for younger kids and lacking aircon.
I found this boring, lacking story emotion and depth. I love the film. This would be fine for small children who like big fluffy static puppets and minimal story but I’m really puzzled by the good reviews generally. No one sings either ? Just a singer in corner. It felt like they put so much into puppets everything else took second place. The puppet broke down and there was a 20 min delay half way through and they made no effort to shorten the interval so people with kids could leave early. Also they switched the air con off during the performance so it was over 30 degrees.

Excellent Experience
This was an amazing and different experience, the acting was fantastic. All in all, the effects stole the show by making me question what is real. The coordination and skill behind this masterpiece is to be commended.
Have a great time enjoying this wonderful display of acting and art.
