They will involuntarily assign you to a mixed language van requiring the guide to do what is supposed to be a conversational, premium, 9-hour small-group tour in an 8-passenger van in two languages. Booking this tour requires risking that you will listen to a language you do not understand for half of the time that the guide is talking. I have been on many tours and languages are always separated so that every customer can benefit from the guide's full attention. The only exception is in a large group tour if there is a separate and dedicated translator who is translating simultaneously via headphone audio to the second language so that, again, the guide's full services can be given to all customers all of the time. To his credit, the guide was talented at changing between languages and managed to salvage the experience somewhat. But it still is a materially worse experience than the single language tour that other vans got for the same money. And this review is not a reflection of the guide. It is a reflection of the business practice of doing this at all, much less without disclosure. And it is a reflection of Viator failing to properly supervise their operators to protect their customers. If it was disclosed when buying that the tour could operate in two languages at the operator's whim, we would have never have bought it (and I suspect many others would not have either). This is not a start up trying to fill their van so that it does not get repossesed. This is a large operator with about a dozen vans leaving at the same time, from the same place, going to roughly (and in many cases exactly) the same places. They could have stuck to one language per van like a proper small group tour but instead decided to either sell more tickets than their capacity allowed for that or decided not to use an extra van.
Hi there! Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. We are sorry to hear that the bilingual format of your tour did not match your expectations. Our aim is always to provide high-quality small-group experiences while ensuring that guests from different backgrounds can enjoy the destinations we visit. On certain departures, tours may operate bilingually to maintain small group sizes and guarantee departures for all guests. Our guides are experienced in managing these groups and strive to ensure that all participants receive the same information, attention, and overall experience, regardless of language. We appreciate your recognition of your guide's efforts in this regard. We understand that some travellers prefer a single-language environment and respect that preference. At the same time, many guests appreciate the opportunity to travel in intimate groups rather than having departures consolidated into larger vehicles or cancelled due to insufficient numbers. We value your comments and will take them into consideration as we continue refining our experiences. We are pleased to hear that your guide helped make the day enjoyable despite your concerns and hope that you nevertheless left with fond memories of Sintra and its remarkable sites. Kind regards, Antonio Inside Lisbon
Alberto was a wealth of information during our entire tour. He kept in mind that some of our tour members needed extra time to get from one place to another. I felt Alberto to take time to answer all our questions and got to know each of us individually.
This was an excellent excursion. Our tour guide, Alberto, was very knowledgeable about the region and shared many insights and facts about the areas we visited. I would highly recommend Inside Lisbon if you are visiting the city. One of the better tour companies we have used. We went specifically with this tour because we wanted to see the well at Sintra. We stopped in Cascais for lunch and he provided great recommendations for restaurants. We never felt rushed on the trip and were able to see the things that were of interest to us. A small group tour is definitely the way to go. Thank you Alberto for making our day so enjoyable.
Great day trip to Sintra! Alberto was fantastic guide who was very knowledgeable and amazing through our journey. Highly recommend!
Our guide Antonio was stiff at first with very rigid communication and an over explanation of the sites. However, as the tour progressed he softened and it was clear that he just really cared. Our group became cohesive and we had great connections, interactions and a wonderful experience. We had the best time with him and on this trip. We would chose Viator again and are so happy to have done this trip! Antonio you are the best!!
Cobs Roca was visited early morning to save time. It was totally fogged over. I wonder if we went later in the afternoon as originally planned if the fog would have dispersed.
Very organized 8 person van tour. Our tour guide and driver Antonio provided us with a lot of history on Portugal and Sintra. After arriving in Sintra we stopped for a quick snack and walk around the village before heading to Pena Palace. Many people waiting on line but with our perfectly timed tickets we entered and enjoyed our visit. The views from the top are breathtaking. Comfortable shoes are a must as there is a lot of walking to get from place to place as well as many hills. Next our visit around the outdoor gardens. Our timed tickets again kept our visit organized. Absolutely beautiful, great for pictures and a lot of walking and hills. After wonderful visit to both sites we headed to Cascais, a lovely beach town. We stopped and had a delicious lunch of fresh fish and wine at a restaurant recommended by Antonio. More history as we sat back on the van our way back to Lisbon after a fantastic day.
This was our favorite tour from Lisbon by Inside Lisbon tours. Started and ended on time, very nice tour bus, helpful tour guides. Beautiful scenery of Peña Castle, Sintra, Regaleira and the Initation Well and park, and Cabo Da Roca on the coast. However lunch at the last stop in Cascais was very late, 3:30 pm so maybe bring snacks and of your own for the bus. We thought the time seeing Cascais was enough for us and it wasn’t worth doing a day trip to go back on our own. Overall it was a lot of walking total but we enjoyed it and would recommend this tour.
Fab tour guide, very knowledgeable but Sintra and Pena very busy and felt a bit rushed, but we fitted lots in so not a big negative! Guide John definitely made the trip, knows everything about Portuguese history. We would definitely recommend but take snacks and be prepared to walk quickly
A wonderful experience, the places themselves are incredible and our guide Juan was exceptional, thank you for providing us with an excellent tour, Juan!
