A tasting of Bulgarian wines at Cork&Fork wine bar
My wife and I went to a wine tasting at Cork&Fork. We tasted several wines - white, rosé and red. I enjoyed them all.
Desi was our guide through the tasting. She is a very experienced sommelier who has worked in California and London. I think that she might be a bit of a big deal, too, because she mentioned appearing on TV and being interviewed by a US newspaper.
There was a bit of a mix up when we arrived. Apparently, we hadn't properly confirmed our time when we booked, so they weren't sure when to expect us.
Desi went beyond the call of duty getting organised for us on the spot. She then spent far longer than expected talking us through the wines and may have sneaked in an extra tasting or two.
She loves her job and it was a really fun, entertaining, educational, hour and a half.
We started with a white wine, a Muscat of Alexandria. I was worried that it might be too sweet, because muscat is used for fortified wines. However, it was dry, fruity and absolutely delicious.
Discussing this wine uncovered a shared agreement between the three of us of how much we all disliked sauvignon blanc. It was at that point that I knew we would all get along well.
Next up was a rosé, made from a Bulgarian grape called Rubin. This grape was created in 1944 by cross breeding shiraz and nebbiolo. Rubin means ruby in Bulgarian, because that is the colour of the wine. Again, dry, fruity and delicious.
Then there were two reds, Gamza - a lighter red something like a pinot noir, and a Mavrud. Mavrud is a very popular Bulgarian red wine. We've actually had some of this already on our trip, but this one was much, much nicer.
This was a great experience that I'd recommend to anyone who enjoys drinking wine and talking about it.

Wine tasting break in central Plovdiv
This was amazing! Easy to find in central old town. Beautiful wine cellar. Great wine choices. We enjoyed the easy conversation w/Stacy. Sad when we had to leave, it was like saying goodbye to a long lost friend. Highly recommend!
