This is not a private tour. The tour is run by the Robben Island Museum, which runs the ferry and the tours through the prison. Guides, all former Robben Island inmates, tell it like it was from personal experience. Excellent!

One of the most moving tours I have ever been on. The atrocities these people suffered should be remembered always. The guides stories were so interesting and awful at the same time. My only complaint is it felt a little rushed through the buildings, I would have liked more time to look around.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Must-Do Experience in Cape Town! Our Robben Island half-day tour was one of those experiences that really stays with you. I’m so glad we decided to do it! Having our tickets pre-booked and our transfer already arranged made everything so much easier—we were able to enjoy the day without worrying about the details. A huge shout-out to Simon, who handled our transfer! He was absolutely wonderful—friendly, professional, on time, and made sure we knew exactly where we needed to be. Having someone take care of the transportation made the experience feel seamless from beginning to end. We also had Nior as our second tour guide, and he was fantastic. He added even more insight and context to the experience, helping us better understand the island’s history and significance. Once we arrived at Robben Island, the experience became so much more than just another excursion. Walking through a place with so much history and seeing the prison where Nelson Mandela spent so many years was incredibly powerful. The first part of the tour provided valuable historical background, while the final half was guided by an actual former prisoner. Hearing the stories directly from someone who experienced life inside the prison made the tour especially moving and personal. Hearing about what the prisoners endured during apartheid really puts things into perspective. There are some places you visit just to take pictures, and then there are places you visit that make you stop, listen, learn, and reflect. Robben Island was definitely one of those places for us. If you’re traveling to Cape Town, I highly recommend making time for this tour. The history alone makes it worth visiting, and having the pre-booked tickets, reliable transfer with Simon, and knowledgeable guidance from Nior made the entire experience even better. Definitely a memorable part of our South Africa adventure! 🇿🇦❤️

This tour was done with an ex prisoner. He gave us a lot of information what life was like in prison. He also told us what it is like now and how hard it is to make a living.

Ferry left on time and tour guide was very knowledgeable. Had a great time. The top deck on the Ferry fills fast. Cool to sit on the stern and look at the water and engines work.

Nice boat ride over to the island then you do a bus tour around the island and quite a bit of walking which was so nice. Lucky was our guide and he had spent 5 years in this prison and showed us the life of prisoners. He was very interesting. He really made the tour. The girl that was the speaker on the bus gave lots of good info. After getting off the bus we got a cookie and a water at a little store where you can see PENGUINS!!

I had the most amazing experience at Robben Island museum,from the historical visuals and explanations to the tour guide made it very worth it and I will most definitely go back again.

It was an incredibly moving experience and the tour guides were fantastic. So knowledgeable and one of the guides was a former political prisoner. It really gave you such an appreciation for how much they have accomplished.

The ferry was calm. On the island we saw the prison blocks and some of the older buildings. The former prisoner shared real stories about the hard days and how people kept going. A few light comments helped. Felt both sobered and grateful by the end.

The bus tour gave good context, then the prison walk made it personal. The ex-prisoner talked about the cells, the labour, and small acts of hope. A couple of unexpected jokes lightened the mood. Left feeling thoughtful.
