The least of the Meow Wolves

I live in Albuquerque, and was at the original Meow Wolf in Santa Fe shortly after it opened. It was an amazing experience, where the art was totally cool and original AND the underlying story/mystery was also engaging. We often brought family here over the years and all were universally amazed. Then they opened in Denver, and while that is a very impressive installation, we still loved Santa Fe too. Omega Mart in Las Vegas was very cool as well, and is by far the funniest exhibition. It has an impressive scale, but was fun, even though I started really noticing that the "art" was being replaced with more, what I would describe as, "corporate whimsy". It was starting to feel plastic and manufactured, and less like a crazy collaboration between artists allowed to pursue their individual fancies. Then we went to Houston. While there were some cool things, and the radio station was very nicely realized...it started to feel predictable and frankly, we finished in about 90 minutes. And then, this last weekend, my adult son and I visited Grapevine and that's when it struck withi full force...Meow Wolf is no longer an artistic journey blended with a mystery. It is a sanitized experience that still has moments of great creativity, but overall feels rote. In fact, it calls back to the Santa Fe facility significantly, and in ways that don't make you go "hey, it's cool the way the story is now circling back to the original" but in a way that makes you miss the excitement of the original. It was over $60 per person to get in (we didn't look for coupons or anything; just paid full price since it was a last-minute decision to go), and it was not really worth that much. Heck, the fact that it is in a fairly ordinary mall tells you a lot about how we've come from the cool, refurbed buildings of the early days to simply taking an available shell space and squeezing something in. Heck, even the entrance is mostly just a painted wall, and not a true invitation to come in an experience something unique. I know they are planning to open more locations, and I'll probably keep going in the hopes of finding that spark again (and to support a NM company), but I'm getting discouraged. If you've NEVER been to a Meow Wolf before, you might love this, but if you can save your first experience for any other Meow Wolf, I'd suggest that you try to do that.

Lots of black lite art....

Lots of black lite art. Some interactive with the art. Seemed more appropriate for teenagers or people in their 20's.

One of the best hands-on art experiences in the world!

It's one of the best teambuilding experiences I do. It's wonderful watching your colleagues turn into kids and explore the world. It's great for families and couples, too! The Grapevine location is very similar to the original in Sante Fe.

Love Meow Wolf and always have a blast!

My kids and I are fans of Meow Wolf and have been for about a decade. The Grapevine (Dallas) location is similar to the Santa Fe one (which we also love). Given our proximity to the DFW area, this is the one we have visited the most (4 times so far). Vegas is also good, and Houston is decent, but not quite on par. We have yet to do Denver. In the past we have twice experienced the fire alarm going off and having to temporarily evacuate (both false alarms), which was annoying. Luckily that didn't happen on our most recent visit. If you like fast-paced, fun, out-of-the-ordinary activities that adults and kids of all ages will enjoy, this is your place. If Terry Gilliam had designed Disneyland, it might be a little like this.

Truly unique and amazing

I had no idea what to expect. My partner and I were in town for a convention and had some extra time to burn, so we decided to stop in. This was truly one of the most unique and memorable experiences I will have in my lifetime hands down. My better half and I spent the better part of two hours exploring all the little nooks and crannies of this beautiful and inviting exhibit, and I HIGHLY recommend anyone and everyone to come see it.

More fun than I expected!

Our family had a lot of fun at this location. I honestly didn’t know what to expect but I was hoping the price of the tickets would be worth it in the end. My kids were begging to go so I was committed either way, haha. We all really enjoyed our time and we could have spent a lot more time without getting bored. In the end we were there for over 2 hours and my 6 year old was still having fun. A major benefit is the staff here. They were all friendly and committed to play their parts/roles. I really appreciative of that because it made the whole thing seem more “real” to my kids. There is a ton to explore and we barely scratched the surface of solving the mystery. I think we will definitely go back in the future because it’s an activity not in front of a screen and you get to work together as a family. Also, there’s a bar in the center with a short line.

Always a fun time!

I personally have been twice to this location (couple trip and as a family with my 10 yr old for his birthday request) and I've been to Denver's location a few times as well. I find it fun it look at the the little stuff - I always find something new that I haven't seen the time before, we found a whole new room this last time (RV room leading off the fridge room). I think it's so different, having a storyline but still cool to just look around too if your not into it. They had a drink station (wish we tried something) but it was like slushies and different kinds of drinks, that I could see. The 10 yr old likes the ability to run around and climb around - it's hard to keep an eye on your kids in here sometimes but they make it out alive. It's good as an adult or family trip for sure. I always recommend it to friends and family.

Waste of time and money

Over hyped. Not worth the money. Ended up paying almost double due to them being busy. Experience didn’t have a good flow and the app didn’t support it well. Will never waste my time on this again

I can’t believe I paid for this.

It wasn’t my thing at all. Everything looked cheap and dirty. The bacteria and amoeba theme was very unappealing.
