It was quite a long drive to Khujand, (2 Hours to the Border, 1/2 Border Crossing & 3/4 Hr to Khujand, so 3 1/4 hours on the way), but it was all well organised. Taxi collection on time, Border Crossing reasonable and our driver and guide waiting for us at the border in Tajikistan. Our guide was very friendly and told us lots about Tajikistan. We visited Arbob Palace and Gardens, the Panjshambe Market and the Khujand Fortress and had local museum guides in both the palace and fortress both of whom spoke excellent clear English and provided information that our day guide would not necessarily have known, but without being to excessively detailed. Both the Palace and Fortress were very interesting with brightly coloured paint and tiles. The trip back was longer as we got to the border crossing just behind a bus load of people trying to enter Uzbekistan, so the return crossing took around 1 1/2 Hours. The cost of the tour felt quite expensive, but you have a taxi driver for the day plus another driver and guide and entry fees and lunch provided, so reasonable considering all the time of everyone involved. A very worthwhile trip with a very good guide. Do it, and don't forget to arrange your electronic visa in advance if from the UK (around 2 weeks turnaround time).

when can i return? this was such a lovely day trip from tashkent. it was seamless for me - driver picks you up at your hotel/airbnb, drives you to the border, you cross and meet your english speaking guide after you cross the border, and go on a lovely tour to khujand, tajikistan. then return the same way! my lovely english speaking guide was nasima. she was a local from khujan- grandparents all from khujand and had live there most of her life, except for some time living abroad in russia/china as an adult. was so interesting to hear the story and history of tajikistan, from ancient times (alexandre the great), to modern times (independence from the soviet union, afghan war and refugees), from a local! we went to a cultural centre modelled after a palace in st petersburg, then a dazzling tea house where locals commonly get married. we then had a big lunch (included in tour!!) at a popular restaurant - borsch, tomato salad, sashlika (kebab), and fried fish (yum), with black tea to wash it down. continued to city centre khujand to the afghan and thursday market, had ice cream, and then went to the khujand fortress, inside is a museum, and then went to the nearby old city of khujand where local artisans and craftsmen work. oh it was such a good trip!!! my lovely drivers on uzbek side was dima and tajik side was saiyood. it was such a good first experience to tajikistan and i am already planning when i can go back and explore more. thank you team!

Quite a big experience with travel getting to the border. The border is about 1 and a 1/2 km long which you have to walk. On our return we had to present passports four times. i couldn't get over how backward it was. Took me about to Checkpoint Charlie 55 years ago. However we were met at the other end by two delightful young Tajik men who took us around. They were so helpful and the guide spoke excellent English.

Nancy was such a great tour guide. And was waiting for us with water and snacks (and a car with AC) as soon as we crossed the border. She showed us much around Khujand, and taught us so much about the history and culture. It was great to have the experience with someone from there and show us around unlike we would ever be able to do ourselves. A great day trip from Tashkent!

We had a great trip with Nancy! We were picked up from our hotel and travelled to the Uzbek-Tajik border with another couple who were also doing the trip. The border is a foot crossing where you walk between checkpoints. On arrival the other side of the border, Nancy was waiting for us with our driver - this portion of the tour was private. We saw all the sights listed and Nancy gave a wonderful and detailed commentary throughout the day. She could tailor it to our interests and even arranged our lunch to be at the ‘Centre of Plov’ once I had said I enjoy this meal! This was a great way to find out more about the history of Tajikistan and also get immersed in the culture of everyday life at the markets. After sightseeing, we returned to the border and our transfer was waiting at the other side for us and the other couple to return to Tashkent. Great experience with excellent communication throughout! I would also like to express my appreciation to DiscoveryStan for their support in our visa application - they provided a detailed explanation of requirements and arranged a letter of invite for us, this resulted in our visa being approved first time! I had an absolutely wonderful experience with my tour guide Nasima! She gave me warm welcome at the Tajik border. She took me to all the most beautiful sites and made sure I didn't miss a single highlight. I traveled in a comfortable, spacious SUV, which made the journey so enjoyable and relaxing. What really set her apart was her deep knowledge of the history behind every location — she brought each place to life with fascinating stories and details. She was incredibly helpful, attentive, and went above and beyond to make sure we had the best experience possible. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a memorable and informative tour!

Picked up on time, arrived at the border timely. Border crossing is longer than normal, but is easy, just keep walking. My guide was on the other side holding a sign. I think her name was Nancy, very knowledgeable and very nice. Food was great, overall a great day. Traffic was an issue going back, but not the company’s fault. Solid trip

I had a wonderful experience and the coordination of the border crossing was flawless. Nezima and her driver met me on the Tajikistan side of the border and showed me important sites in and around Khujand. We had an enjoyable lunch with salad, shashlik and lemon tea at an outdoor restaurant in the city. I had a wonderful time at the bazaar and Nezima helped me with the purchase of nuts and dried fruits. She also helped me with currency exchange.

I had a nice day trip to Khujand. The guide was lovely, and though the time in the city was limited, I felt like I learned some meaningful aspects of Tajik culture through our conversation. I enjoyed the lunch too. A driver picked me up in the morning and took me to the border. I needed to walk across the border to connect with another driver and guide, but the process was smooth overall. Would recommend if you have limited time and would like to visit Khujand in a day.

Great day trip from Tashkent to Khujand! It’s a perfect way to explore a different country in just one day. The service was good, everything was well organized, and the experience was smooth and enjoyable. Highly recommended for a quick and interesting getaway.
