We had a really great and interesting tour with Blue City Adventure through Jodhpur! Our guide was very friendly, attentive, and introduced us to the city in an exciting and personal way. It was especially nice that we not only saw the well-known sights, but were also able to learn a lot about the history, culture, and life in the "Blue City." The tour was varied and informative, without being boring or too overloaded. Our guide was able to tell many interesting stories and backgrounds and also took time for our questions. Because of this, we got to know Jodhpur from a completely different perspective. Another highlight was the delicious samosas and the lassi that we were able to try along the way – absolutely recommended! Overall, a very successful tour with a great guide. For anyone who wants to experience Jodhpur authentically and learn more about the history and culture of the city, we can definitely recommend Blue City Adventure!

We had a very nice and authentic Blue City Walk in Jodhpur. Our guide was very knowledgeable and gave us many interesting insights into the history, culture, and everyday life in the Blue City. It was especially nice that the tour was very personal and authentic, and we also saw corners that one probably wouldn't have discovered on their own. Our guide was extremely friendly and helpful, and his English was very good, so we were able to communicate without any problems. Overall, a great way to get to know Jodhpur from an authentic and personal perspective. Highly recommended!

As a professional tour guide I can say that this is one of the best tours I have taken. Imtiyaz did not only infect me with his enthusiasm about his amazing home town. He really showed me its most impressive sites, shared his Apple knowledge and let me feel at home in an unknown environment.

We had a wonderful experience exploring Jodhpur's Blue City with Blue City Adventures. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and professional. He took us through beautiful Blue lanes, hidden alleys and local market.It was really difficult on our own. If you want to have best experience in Jodhpur, this tour is must try. Highly recommend !!!

We had a very disappointing experience with a guide called Imtiyaz in Jodhpur, and I would strongly advise other tourists to be extremely cautious. Our experience began at Mehrangarh Fort. As we were returning our audio guides, an employee called Imtiyaz offered to take us on a tour. Given that he was working at the Fort, we naturally assumed this was an official guiding service associated with Mehrangarh. It was only after the tour had begun that we understood that he works part-time at the Fort but mainly operates separately as a tour guide. Initially, we didn’t mind. Imtiyaz is well spoken, personable and clearly knows Jodhpur well. Unfortunately, what followed contained a series of red flags that seem glaringly obvious in hindsight. First, he repeatedly offered to take photographs of us, but strangely insisted on taking them on his own phone rather than ours. He then insisted on taking us into a local person’s home to see the Fort from their rooftop. We politely said no, but he persisted and smooth-talked us into going, to the point where it became uncomfortable to refuse again. Once there, we were told we should leave the family a tip for allowing us into their home. We were subsequently taken through some very dirty backstreets with the promise of seeing the famous “Blue City”. Unfortunately, none of what we were shown remotely resembled the beautiful blue streets and viewpoints for which Jodhpur is known. The tour then became increasingly focused on places where we were encouraged to spend money. We were taken to a sweet shop, a samosa shop and a lassi shop. Those places themselves were not particularly problematic, but in retrospect they seemed to build our confidence in following him to the shops that came afterwards. The first was a clothing/textile shop called Baba Art / Student Shop near the Clock Tower. Here we were given an extremely convincing sales performance. The proprietor claimed, among other things, that the business had been featured in the FT’s How to Spend It in 2010 and suggested that they supplied luxury houses such as Hermès. We were shown supposedly high-quality pure cashmere/pashmina products at around INR 7,000–9,000 each. We unfortunately fell for the presentation and bought four items. Imtiyaz then took us to another shop, SunCity Spices, where we received another elaborate sales pitch about the exceptional quality of the spices and international customers in places such as Italy. By this stage we were becoming increasingly uncomfortable. The prices were very high, but with our guide sitting alongside us and enthusiastically endorsing the products, there was an implicit pressure to buy despite assurances that there was “no pressure”. We bought three small packs for around INR 1,500 largely because we wanted to leave. The real wake-up call came when we returned to our hotel, Umaid Bhawan Palace. We mentioned where our guide had taken us to the hotel staff, who immediately told us that we had been taken to tourist traps and that these were not the sort of genuine Jodhpur establishments they would recommend. Given Umaid Bhawan Palace’s deep connection with Jodhpur and the Royal Family, we took that warning particularly seriously. Until that conversation, we had actually given Imtiyaz and the shopkeepers the benefit of the doubt. Hearing this from the concierge suddenly made all of the earlier red flags fall into place. We then researched some of the claims we had been told at the textile shop and became very concerned that we had been misled, including over what had been presented to us as an FT How to Spend It article. Within an hour, we returned to Baba Art to return the items and requested a full refund for the textiles. Thankfully, we had paid by credit card, which gave us some protection if the merchant refused. Getting the refund was an ordeal in itself. We encountered excuse after excuse, including being asked to go down to their basement (which we of course refused!) and then being told that their card machine could not process a refund. Eventually, I effectively had to guide the person through using the card terminal so that the refund was actually processed. I then contacted my bank to make sure the refund had gone through and could not simply be reversed after we left. We also decided not to use the spices we had purchased. Having lost confidence in the entire experience, and having concerns about their apparent quality and freshness, we simply threw them away. Thankfully, our financial loss was therefore limited to around INR 1,500. But the whole experience left a very sour taste. Our strong impression was that what had been presented to us as a sightseeing tour had, at least in part, become a way of steering us towards selected shops where tourists are encouraged to spend significant amounts of money. We subsequently understood that guides can receive substantial commissions from such shops, which would explain why tourists are taken to particular establishments and why prices can be so inflated. The frustrating thing is that Imtiyaz could actually be a very good guide. He is articulate, personable and clearly knows the city. If he had simply shown us the best of Jodhpur, without the persistent detours and shopping stops, we might have happily recommended him. Instead, we came away feeling that the trust he had built with us was being used to make us more receptive to sales pitches. My strongest advice to other visitors is: be extremely wary of any guide who starts taking you to shops, however friendly, knowledgeable or convincing they appear to be. “There is no pressure to buy” means very little when the person you have trusted as your guide has brought you into the shop, sits alongside you during the sales pitch and repeatedly reinforces how wonderful the merchandise supposedly is. If you want to shop in Jodhpur, ask your hotel or another genuinely independent source for recommendations, choose the shops yourself and compare prices before purchasing. And if a guide unexpectedly starts incorporating shops into what you thought was a sightseeing tour, I would politely but firmly decline. Jodhpur itself is a wonderful city and Mehrangarh Fort is magnificent. It is therefore particularly unfortunate that this experience became one of the lasting memories of our time in the city. Please be careful.
