For the money you pay this experience really isn’t worth it. We were up at the crack of dawn to drive 3.5 hours away to the orangutan sanctuary. The guides there showed us some of the orangutans but didnt explain anything about them bar their names. It was over within the hour. They are also behind electric fences despite us being told they were “semi wild” and can go where they want..? We then went to the temple which was an hour away and were there for 30 minutes. We then drove another 15 mins and had 1 hour to see the railway station, the clock tower, visit concubine lane and also eat before taking another 3.5 hour drive back. Everything was rushed. Our driver was lovely but the experience itself was not worth it. You’re paying to sit in the tour bus for most of the day. I wouldn’t recommend this activity to anyone personally - definitely not for the amount charged. I asked for a partial refund and was told no. Ive been on day tours and paid half the price doing so much more. The itinerary really needs re-evaluating
What an amazing experience! The guide was very accommodating providing two potatoes as we were making good time. The orangutan visit was exceptional. The guide was very knowledgeable and the centre takes great care in their treatment of the animals. The highlight of the Ipoh visit was Concubine Lane. A great day out!!
Guide/driver didn't know the itinerary. Was going to omit ipoh until I showed that we paid for it. Drove by the back of train station until I showed him the picture on our booking of the iconic train station then he drove by the proper one. Said that the white coffee that ipoh is known for is just regular coffee but served sit down in a Cafe. Wrong. So I insisted that I wanted to try some. Seemed He was in a hurry to get back home. The orangutans are very interesting but they do not roam free. There is an electric fence around their enclosures. They have obviously been zapped by it because they really really avoid touching it. Sad
Hi Colette, Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re truly sorry to hear that your experience didn’t meet expectations. It’s concerning to hear that the guide was not fully aware of the itinerary—this is certainly not the level of service we aim to provide, and we’ll be following up internally to address this issue. We also appreciate you pointing out the confusion around the Ipoh train station and white coffee. Your comments help us improve the training and knowledge of our guides so future guests can enjoy a smoother and more informed experience. Regarding the orangutans, we understand your concerns. While the sanctuary aims to provide a safe and educational environment, we recognize that it may not match everyone’s expectations of a “wild” setting. We always strive to balance animal welfare, conservation, and guest understanding, and we’ll share your feedback with the center as well. Thank you again for your honest review—it helps us grow and do better. Safe travels!
Our driver Albinhar was lovely and friendly, on arrival to the island, we spent an extremely short time there and didn’t have a tour guide on the island but cool to see some orangutans. The temple was really good, nice view from the top. On a whole it was a lot of time in a car and minimal time at locations. Wouldn’t recommend the trip it’s self but would make my own way.
Hi Vella, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We're glad to hear that you found Albinhar lovely and friendly, and that you enjoyed seeing the orangutans and the beautiful view from the temple. We're sorry to hear that the overall structure of the trip didn't meet your expectations, particularly the amount of time spent in transit compared to time at the locations. Your feedback is really valuable and helps us look into ways we can improve the itinerary and experience for future guests. We appreciate your honesty and hope you still took away some memorable moments from the day. If you decide to explore the area again, we'd be happy to help with recommendations for more personalized experiences. Safe travels!
Not worth the long 3.5 hour drive each way from Klcc to see a few orangutans who did not really want to come out the shade . Tour is about an hour at most , very Disappointed. Not worth $318 USD 😕 for two adults
Thank you for sharing your feedback. We're sorry to hear that the experience didn’t meet your expectations. While wildlife encounters can be unpredictable, we understand how disappointing it can be when the orangutans are not as visible as hoped. We also take note of your concerns regarding the long travel time and overall value. Your input is valuable, and we will review ways to enhance the experience for future guests. We truly appreciate you giving us a chance and hope you had a great time in Malaysia otherwise!
I took my daughter on this trip. She wanted to see orang-utans. The trip started early - 550am we were off. Then the nightmare began. The driver wasn't familiar with his car, which he had borrowed from a friend. In not even sure whether he had driven long distances. Firstly, he insisted on stopping every 45 minutes, even though we did not want to stop and wanted to get to Orang-utan sanctuary as early as possible. I suspect he needed a cigarette every 45 minutes. Secondly, he insisted that we stop after 150km to give the car a break - never heard such nonsense. Thirdly, he didn't realise that he had "lane assust" feature on, which warned and then started the car to a lane. But, without knowing this, the driver insisted on driving outside the lanes. This resulted in the car being pulled back into the lane. It was comical to start with, but became very dangerous. Fourthly, he device to drive well below the speed limit -80kph in a 110kph zone. All of this meant, we got to the sanctuary at 10:05, and the first boat had left at 9:45 - which we would have really make it, if it wasn't for the bizarre driving. The next boat was at 11:15, so we just had to hang around for 75 minutes. I'll cover the sanctuary later. On the way back from the sanctuary, it started to rain. Then the driver decided to drive over the speed limit on the right hand lane, with cars around him honking and going around him on the inside. We did get home safely - but the driving on this trip was the worst I have seen. Apart from all of what I described, he was constantly on two mobile phones, adding more risk to the driving. It was simply horrendous. In addition, the driver had very little knowledge of what he was showing us. He mentioned a couple of things, but didn't have knowledge of the places that we saw. Now to the sightseeing. The Orang-utan sanctuary was fantastic, it was explained well, and the Orang-utans put on a show. Absolutely first class. The Chinese cave temple was fantastic - although we saw it with some heavy storms happening. It was lovely, the geology of the cave was fascinating. Then we went to the Ipoh railway station, and then to the concubine lane and the heritage walk which were pretty good. But without any information, it was difficult to get into. I think it was a horrible trip, saved by the Orang-utans. I've used Viator before many times, this was the worst tour I've been on. I'm sure the tour itself wasn't the problem. It was the guide/driver. It is sold as a 12 hour trip, if done properly it should be 12 hours. Ours was 12 hours, but there are over 2 hours of wasted time with the driver. Very disappointing.
Dear Murali, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We are truly sorry to hear that the transportation and guiding aspects of the tour did not meet your expectations. Safety and professionalism are our top priorities, and we take your concerns about the driving and lack of knowledge from the guide very seriously. We will be addressing these issues with our team to ensure that future guests have a smoother and more informative experience. That said, we’re glad to hear that you enjoyed the Orangutan Sanctuary and the other sights along the way. We appreciate your honest feedback and will use it to make necessary improvements. If you’d like to discuss your experience further, please feel free to reach out to us directly. We value your input and would love the opportunity to make things right. Safe travels!
The tour is 100% worth it, plus the guide I had, Albinhar bin Mohd fikal, made my tour everything I expected and more, first the punctuality to pick me up, and the kindness at all times, always attentive and having time to walk around and take photos. The orangutans are spectacular, the tour starts at 6 and is to get to take the first boat to the island and appreciate these creatures without so many people. Then we went to a temple in a cave with more than 400 stands, it is difficult, but it is possible, we went to explore Ipoh, the place is beautiful, it looks like bohemian Paris. Anyway, take the tour and with the agency Asni Tours and the best guide Albinhar bin Mohd fikal Thanks for all
The drive from KL is a bit long but worth it. Our driver Harry stopped at a gas station on the way and we grabbed breakfast at one of the many stands. The food at the gas station food courts was cheap and good! The orangutans were nice, they live in fenced in areas but have plenty of room to climb and roam. The guides had fruit to feed them which brought them out for us to see. We stopped at a gas station on the way back and had another delicious and cheap meal. Our driver Harry was great!
It was very good. The driver was very kind and gave me two toilet breaks in the middle of the three-hour trip. The tour was just right, the time was right, the schedule was right, and the Japanese were very grateful. If you get hungry on the way, they will stop by a restaurant or wait for you in front of that restaurant, and I think that price is cheaper now.
A great day trip to get out of the city and see more of Malaysia. Thanks to Rajan our driver who was extremely informative and went out of his way to make the day memorable for us.
