This was an absolutely wonderful experience and one of my favourite activities in Hoi An. What I loved most is that it was fun, varied and completely low-effort physically, which makes it perfect if you’ve already done a lot of walking or sightseeing and want something different. The day started with hotel pickup and a coconut basket boat ride through Cam Thanh. It is definitely touristy and clearly set up for visitors, with fishermen posing with nets, karaoke, photo opportunities and the famous spinning basket boats, but somehow it still felt incredibly joyful rather than fake. Everyone involved seemed genuinely happy to be there and really focused on making sure the tourists were having fun. Our boat rower was an older gentleman who was absolutely lovely and constantly helped us with photos and pointed things out along the way. The spinning basket boat costs extra, but it was wild and very fun. Afterwards, our guide Lily showed us how Vietnamese coffee is made and explained a little about its history. We then made traditional lanterns, which was one of my favourite parts. Lily guided us through every step, and you genuinely leave with a beautiful, well-made lantern that feels like something worth keeping rather than a cheap souvenir. They also package it so it can travel safely in your luggage. The setting was peaceful, right beside the water in the Cam Thanh wetland area, and it made the whole experience feel very relaxed. The final activity was a cooking class lasting around 1.5 hours. It was very hands-on, with everyone involved in preparing the different dishes rather than simply watching. Dietary requirements were also handled really well — I don’t eat seafood, and they easily adapted my dishes, with vegetarian and vegan options available too. At the end, everyone sat down together to enjoy the meal we had prepared, and the food was delicious. I was picked up at around 8am and dropped back at roughly 1:30pm, and I felt the whole experience was excellent value for the amount included. Coconut boats, Vietnamese coffee, lantern making, a full cooking class, lunch and transfers all in one relaxed morning. I would absolutely recommend Phu Lanh Travel. It was fun, well organised, peaceful and genuinely memorable from start to finish.
