great guides, some sort of more ethical way to see the doplhins you don’t enter mnemba & we had high tide so we ended on some random beach, fruits were okay very crowded, area needs to be more protected (licensed, higher prices & fewer boats)

I thought the day as a whole was ok, they picked us up from the beach front of our hotel and dropped us off also. This company was good at keeping a good distance from the dolphins where other operators were on top of them and chasing, however it did feel like we added to the chase at times. Even though we were more on the outside of all the boats and left when it became too busy, I still think there are more ethical ways of doing this. When the dolphins were close it was chaos to jump in for a few seconds and then jump back out and continue on. I actually preferred watching the dolphins swim from sitting in the boat. The Mneba island snorkelling was nice on the Atoll just past the island as you can’t actually set foot on Mneba island as it’s private. The snorkelling was like a drift and very busy. Good water clarity and lots of fish. We didn’t do the sandbank as it was high tide, we ended Up on another beach to have a nice assortment of fruits and water. The captain and the guide were nice and friendly and helpful for those who were not strong swimmers. I don’t think any negatives are the fault of this company, I think this is the way it is in Zanzibar for something probably highly touristy and unregulated.

The captain and guide were both amazing from start to finish! Being a solo traveller and also older (60s) I was slightly apprehensive but they couldn’t do enough to make sure I felt safe, made sure I was ok during the snorkelling and when the waves were quite high they were clearly really experienced and made us all feel very safe. I can’t recommend this trip highly enough - it was excellent! Thank you so much!

It was a great experience! We were able to see many fish and dolphins. Even though they arrived later, they fixed it and we were able to do the tour privately. 100% recommended!

Took this 4 hour dolphin/snorkel tour September 7. Not sure how there are so many good reviews on Tripadvisor. This tour was a bit disappointing. Although all the participants were gathered at the appointed time, we waited for the captain for about 20 minutes. We got to the 1st site only to leave because there were too many boats in the area and apparently were told there is a limit on the number of boats allowed. We snorkeled in an area that personally did not seem that close to Mnemba Island although we did pass by the Island. The coral was probably 15-20 feet below and looked bleached. Water visibility wasn’t as clear as I thought it would be. Food was used to tempt the fish to come to the surface which made for good photos at least. Glad the staff recognized us in the water as all the boats looked similar and it would’ve been hard to find the boat otherwise. We def saw dolphins but the process was not pleasant. Thought we would be snorkeling near some nice coral and that dolphins would swim by now and then. It was really about finding where the dolphins were and then getting into the water quickly so you could “swim” with them. One participant had never snorkeled before and the guides didn’t seem to offer a lot of assistance. Also, no fins are offered so bring your own. The fruit was nice but wasn’t eaten on a sandbar (told that the tide was incorrect for that). We ate on a beach where people with monkeys came around to get you to interact with them (prob for money) and also asked for the fruit for their monkeys.

The team was super friendly, very accommodating, and above all, took great care of us from start to finish. We really felt well taken care of. We also really appreciated the respect shown toward the dolphins. Everything was done calmly, without rushing them, and while respecting their space🫶🏼

Great experience, the guides were top-notch, we went snorkeling, took photos on a sandbar, ate fruit, and above all swam with the dolphins! One of the guides took my GoPro and took some superb videos very close to the dolphins! I recommend it!

Our Mnemba Island snorkeling trip was a very disappointing experience, particularly because we specifically chose a tour that we hoped would respect our concerns about ethical dolphin encounters. Communication Before the Tour We contacted the tour provider several times in advance to confirm the pickup location and, most importantly, to ask about their approach to dolphin encounters and whether they followed ethical practices. Unfortunately, several of our messages went unanswered. This lack of communication continued throughout the tour. Dolphin Encounter – Not What We Expected We were assured that we would not be chasing dolphins, as this was a significant concern for us. However, once we were on the water, it absolutely felt like we were chasing them. When dolphins appeared, the guide repeatedly shouted, “Jump, jump, jump!” and instructed us to get into the water with them without providing any meaningful guidance or explanation. We were jumping in and out of the water numerous times, which felt chaotic and uncomfortable. This was not the respectful, responsible wildlife encounter we had hoped for, and it was the biggest disappointment of the day. Safety Concerns Safety was another major issue. While we were out chasing dolphins, our captain hit another boat. There were an excessive number of boats in the area, and the traffic made the situation feel very unsafe, both for people on the boats and for snorkelers in the water. We received no clear safety briefing about life jackets, what to do when dolphins appeared, or how to safely enter and exit the water. After the collision, we were even more concerned about the lack of safety information and communication. Our boat also experienced engine trouble on the way out. We stopped while the crew worked on the engine, but nobody explained what was happening or how long we might be there. Once again, we were left wondering what was going on. Snorkeling at Mnemba Atoll When we reached the snorkeling area, there were simply too many boats. This is not necessarily the fault of this particular tour operator, as the area itself is extremely crowded, but future visitors should be aware of how congested it can be. When we entered the water, there were no instructions about staying together as a group, what we would be doing, or how long we would be snorkeling. The equipment was also a problem. Several people in our group had to use fins that were either too large or too small because correctly sized equipment was not available. A Few Positives The fruit provided on the boat was delicious, and we appreciated having water available. Those were welcome touches during an otherwise frustrating experience. Overall This was a one-star experience for us. The lack of communication, inadequate safety instructions, equipment problems, boat collision, and especially the feeling that we were chasing dolphins despite explicitly raising that concern beforehand made this tour a poor fit for us. If you are considering this excursion, be aware that the dolphin encounter may involve entering the water repeatedly around multiple boats, and the snorkeling area can be extremely crowded. If ethical wildlife interactions and strong safety practices are priorities for you, we recommend asking very detailed questions and getting clear answers before booking.
