The Skocjan Caves are amazing! As an older person who loses her balance easily, I felt perfectly safe with all the handrails.
Nice tour. Some things to know: ~To get to the cave is about a mile walk. It's on a trail that you must have hiking shoes on. It was muddy when we went. here are also stairs on the trip to the cave. Wide stairs and if you do not normally walk or hike it could be a little strenuous. They are down stairs, but made with rocks. There is a rail to old on to. ~ Inside the cave you will walk on a path that is like a sidewalk. It's not level. There are stairs and more stairs up and down for over an hour or more. It can feel steep and narrow. In some places you will need to go single file. ~ The lighting is not bright. It's like light like just when the sun is setting. ~If you are unsteady walking or afraid of the dark I would suggest you do not go. ~ The tour is long and you there is a some waiting for people catch up. ~ When you are done with the first leg, you can continue to two other paths with waterfalls. That takes an additional 1.5-2.5 hours. ~Overall it's worth it if you don't mind that it's an actual cave hike not just going in and seeing the formations. If you have any health issues or are very pregnant I would suggest not doing the hike. We had an older friend with us and we had to help her with one of us in front of her and one of us behind her. ~No photos allowed in the caves
Titanic, vertiginous, dantesque... there is no shortage of superlatives to describe the maze of caves, each more extraordinary than the last. A giant stalagmite (the size of a building), a canyon to be cold in the back, an angry river, a natural cathedral, decorations straight out of the Tolkien universe... If you opt for path number 3 after the guided tour, consider taking a bottle of water and some fuel. It goes up, it goes down, it’s sporty! But so beautiful... Good walking shoes are also essential (we travel in total about 6km). It is so hot at this time that the 12 degrees in the caves pass cream. Our sweaters stayed in the backpack. The visit is not appropriate for younger children, it is harsh, and hyperactive people must remain under constant supervision. A baby punctuated the ride with his constant crying, the adventure was not to his liking and the parents must have been exhausted. Oh, yes! Remember to book before you go! In summary, you will not regret the €24 spent for 3 hours of visit in this wonder of nature.
Please don't stop going. It's a unique experience. I still dream of flying through that big crater underground. Unique
An incredible experience given it's largely unspoilt presentation - you walk the tour rather than sit on a train. HOWEVER, be aware although many of the pathways are laid concrete, there are still a lot of steps to negotiate, so anybody with mobility issues will struggle, which is when Postojna wins. No photos can be taken (stated reason is to prevent algae growth from artificial light, but I believe it is to keep the groups moving and not have selfie-traffic jams!). Amazing to see the original steps and walkways carved out of the cave walls 100 years ago. Just imagining what those early explorer/tourists could see back then was mind-blowing. Advised to arrive early before scheduled tour start, but many still turned up after kick-off and were able to join OK. Groups are split into smaller Slovenian, Italian & English speaking groups (maybe more in high season). At the end of the cave tour, you can witness the chaos picture taking has on the cohesion of the groups! Souvenir shop has some really good guide books with stunning photos for €5 in many languages, so no need to fret on missing those pics. Fantastic day out, tour lasts approx 90 mins and tour guide is happy to take numerous questions at the many narrative points. Total underground distance is about 2km and at no time was it claustrophobic as ceilings and walkways are tall and wide. Smallest is 100m section at start. Even in winter, temp was about 10C; you will get dripped on, but not soaked, so waterproofs not necessary, but good footwear is! Enjoy, best €16 ever spent!
UNIQUE :) I visited Skocjan Caves and it is a wonderful experience! wear confotable shoes and explore the longer trail! It is not so croweded as Postojna Caves (which are also worth the visit)
Phenomenal natural wonders and beauty! You shouldn't miss the 75 minute guided tour into the bowels of this amazing cavern. Do not expect to take your own photographs or videos - as a FYI.
