African Quarter Tour

Really good tour sharing the history of Germany’s ties to Africa. Our tour guide Desmond was very knowledgeable. He shared the history of the area as well as the street names. Desmond also answered all of our questions and made the tour an interactive one which kept us engaged. At the end of the tour, he also shared a restaurant recommendation

Must do in Berlin

Such a great tour. It was two hours but it went by so fast. No one wanted the tour to end and we stayed another 15 minutes asking the guide questions, that he graciously answered. Super informative and engaging. I think everyone that visits Berlin should take this tour.

An impressive and moving city tour

I took part in a decolonial city tour and am thrilled. The mediation was knowledgeable, reflective and at the same time incredibly accessible – with an impressive balance of depth, humor and clarity, despite the gravity of the subject. Not only did I learn a lot, but I also gained new perspectives. I was particularly impressed by the personality of the speaker: committed, empathetic, authentic. A tour that reverberates for a long time. Unrestrictedly recommended!

Target missed!

I can only agree with the review of Martina L. The tour of the African Quarter by Justice was extremely one-sided in my view. The goal set on the website of Dekoloniale Stadtführung itself, namely "to create a solution-oriented mindset when it comes to creating a new and fairer world", was completely missed in my opinion. For this guided tour of the African Quarter, street names and names of allotment gardens were the only connection in the African Quarter. Without these, the tour could have taken place anywhere else. The guide already took offense at the name of the small garden complex (KGA) "Little Africa", which she portrayed as disparaging. My objection that there was also "Kleinmachnow" near Berlin, for example, and that "small" could refer to the size of the plant, did not lead to relativization on the part of the city guide. The first stop of the tour had been - even before the KGA - at a playground where Justice showed a picture of a playground with tipi tents. Apart from the fact that this playground was not located in the African Quarter, the tipi tents were portrayed as racist game elements. At the junction of Swakopmund Street and Windhuker Straße, the city guide showed a photo of two street names in Swakopmund (Namibia) - Bismarckstraße and Poststraße - and said that there were other streets with German names. This should probably be an indication that colonialism would continue. That the former Kaiser Wilhelm Street in Swakopmund was built in honor of the 1st However, Justice did not mention Namibia's president as Sam Nujoma Avenue in 2001. But it was the renaming of Petersallee to Maji-Maji-Allee in the African Quarter. There was no reference to the current situation of African states. Overall, a solution-oriented mindset was not recognizable for me and the tour at 29 euros per person for 1 1/2 to 2 hours was significantly too expensive.

Too bad! The topic would have had potential!

A "Guided Tour To Go." For me, the long lead in the cold was one-sided. For this unfortunately not so cheap price, however, the provider would have said a room would have become too expensive. Unfortunately, there was no potential to shape the leadership on an equal footing, as our German culture and language was invariably portrayed as bad. Furthermore, it should be noted that the lady showed many photos that were not all from the African quarter, such as the playground with tipi tent. Unfortunately, I had the impression that the lady wanted to lecture us but did not want to acknowledge our opinion or experience as she still considers the African people oppressed. That doesn't go down so well with people who are open to other cultures. In my opinion, the street names were minor.

A must-do in Berlin

The Historical Tour provided rich knowledge about the colonial histories and continuities shaping Berlin, encompassing significant historical events and everyday normalized violences. Justice designed the tour in an open and participatory way, employing illustrative examples and leaving space for questions and engagement. Highly recommended!
