Mombasa. We showed her a list of old mosques we particularly wished to see, as well as an enigmatic Mbaraki pillar near the port. She nodded happily to all except the latter which was in an edgy part of town near the port. We got there. Read on. Her tour of Fort Jesus was illuminating, packed with detailed historical context. She even pointed out the red ants - amazingly red. We loved the patina of the crumbling old walls and the wall drawings done by Portuguese soldiers. Mostly ships and boats, showing every rig and mast, but also churches and a battle with Omani soldiers. The old town is a delight, with mosques, Hindu temples, old houses and the best east African market we have visited. Vendors from as far afield as Somalia and the interior sell a colourful array of fruit, vegetables and spices. The local women using a wooden seat with an integrated metal implement for shredding coconut was of particular interest. Bishamba introduced us to friends along the route. From Pwani Club we purchased a wooden fish, carved by a local boat owner born in Lamu, who crafts them in his free time. Be sure to see the lovely carved furniture, notably the intricate viti vya enzi chairs. We had coconut milk and a very sweet coconut ball sweet from street sellers and bought green cardamon, coffee and lemon pepper in the market. Then Bishamba made a plan: a final tuk tuk ride took us to the Mbaraki pillar, in a hidden courtyard amidst the imposing container port buildings. A massive baobab added to the charm of this place. The pillar is leaning and probably not long for this world as the imposing upright structure it is now. Visit if you have an interest in Swahili architecture, but be sure to go with locals who know the area. A good book to read in advance, especially for the ancient mosques and Mbaraki pillar, is "Swahili Port Cities" by Prita Meier. Thank you Bishamba for being such a fun guide! We had a great tour of Fort Jesus with Bishamba. She was friendly, knowledgeable and brought the history of Fort Jesus and Mombasa to life. The pace was good, we had enough breaks and felt very safe throughout. She even went out of her way to help us find a jewellery shop to replace some silver earrings, which was a lovely extra touch. A really enjoyable experience and we’d definitely recommend Bishamba. 5/5!

Bishamba was wonderful during our tour. She organised several places for us to visit, which we were absolutely fascinated by. Particularly the store and garment production site were impressive and inspiring for what women can do. Additionally, Bishamba was able to give us valuable insights about the construction of Fort Jesus and its historical activities. Thank you again for the effort you made!

I met Bishamba tour guide at the Fort gate on time. She assisted me completing admission form. She was very knowledgeable about the fort. The tour went at a perfect pace. We proceeded to an excellent tour of the old town. So interesting. We visited artisans at work, different markets. I really appreciated all the sights, sounds, and people. Bishamba's knowledge of the trees and fruits ...exceptional.

Bishamba gave us a fantastic tour of Mombasa sights. She explained a huge amount of history at Fort Jesus in a short period of time and showed us the top locations. There isn't much signage so I was glad to have a guide. She then took us through Old Town and the Spice Market and told us about so many different fruits, while weaving in cultural information. It was a fun tour and I highly recommend it.

Well.. well... Honestly, I had a unique moment. I learnt more about our coastal people.. I was able to understand some deep history about coast. It was beautiful ❤️❤️. I will revisit again. The tour guide was awesome and very patient. I loved the visit.

One of the best activities I did in Mombasa. Bishamba was punctual and had good communication ahead of the tour. Bishamba had great knowledge of Fort Jesus. There are also some lovely shops within Fort Jesus. She also helped me to try local street food, which was delicious. Exploring the streets in Old Town and riding in the Tuk Tuk was my favourite part of the tour. I did my tour on a Sunday, which fitted in with my itinerary, but if you want to ensure that all the shops and coffee shops are open, go on a weekday. I would highly recommend choosing Bishamba as your tour guide.
