The private walking tour that I planned took me through some of Busan’s best-known areas — Gukje Market, BIFF Square, Bosu Book Street, and Jagalchi Fish Market — but what made it one of the best tours of my entire South Korea trip was my guide, Choi. I could have walked through these places by myself and seen a market, a book street, and rows of seafood stalls. Choi helped me understand WHY they were there. As we walked, she connected what I was seeing to Busan’s history during the Korean War, when the city became a refuge for people fleeing other parts of the country. She explained how Gukje Market developed amid that upheaval, including black-market trading with U.S. military surplus, and how displaced families adapted when housing and space were scarce. When I mentioned that my grandfather had served in the Korean War, Choi didn’t simply acknowledge it and continue with her script. She stopped and took genuine time with that connection. It changed how the history — and honestly the entire morning — landed for me. What really distinguished Choi, though, was that she paid attention to ME rather than simply delivering a tour. At one point she noticed a street vendor selling suitcases. I’d been trying to solve a luggage problem for two days, so she stopped and helped me inspect the wheels and zippers. Completely unprompted and honestly more than appreciated. Then, as we were closing out our tour, I mentioned that I wanted cooked seafood at Jagalchi Fish Market. She could easily have pointed me toward the market and ended the tour. Instead, she started making calls, found a restaurant that could seat me immediately, and recommended the whole grilled sea bream. It was perfect! One practical note: traffic and road closures prevented my driver from reaching the exact meeting point that morning, which resulted in an unexpected uphill walk before the tour even started. Busan is HILLY, so I’d give yourself some extra time getting to the meeting point. This is exactly what I want from a private tour: not someone simply walking me from attraction to attraction, but someone who gives me context, pays attention, adapts, and helps me understand the place I’m visiting. Choi did all of that exceptionally well. If you’re able to request your guide, request her.
We’re thrilled this became such a meaningful part of your time in Busan! It’s wonderful that the history, personal connection, and thoughtful flexibility helped you experience the city on a much deeper level. Thank you for sharing such incredible feedback!
