Very enriching excursion, our guide Sylvia Brito Morales was excellent, knowledgeable with good explanations. Our tour was booked in English but we were surprised that she spoke French very well, a plus for our discoveries. We recommend this excursion to get a better idea of the Cold War and its inner workings.
Jason did a detailed and thorough review at multiple locations of the Stasi organization and its 91,000 employees. I especially liked his emphasis on how in addition to these employees spying on the general population, they were also managed in a manner that created a "palace of paranoia", where employees lived and worked in close proximity and thus also spied on each other.

What an amazing experience- our guide had grownup in the east and had lived experience of living under Stasi rule. The tour was a very informative and could have lasted longer.
The film "The Lives of Others" (original title "Das Leben der Anderen") tells what StaSi (from the German "StaatsSicherheit") was and what it did before the fall of the Berlin Wall. The museum is in the original seat of the ministry and displays documents and real examples of what the control system was. If you can, watch the movie before you go to Berlin; if you couldn't watch it before, do it later. With objectivity and rigor the museum shows the reality that the film tells and that the Germans lived.
A must see for anyone who has an interest in the history of the former East German State. The museum is situated in the main building of the former Stasi headquarters site and is spread over several floors. Guided tours are available. All the information displays are in both English and German. Apart from the history of the Stasi they give considerable information on some of its leading members. There is a small café onsite. The museum is easy to reach and is only five minutes walk from Magdalenenstraße U-Bahn.
