Our tour guide Balam was very knowledgeable and cares deeply about the topic. Transportation was clean and safe. Tour was a great complement to the Museum of Oaxacan Cultures
Great tour, guide , Ivan, was outstanding. Perfect amount of touring with the guide and free wandering time.
This tour guide was one of the best I’ve ever had. His English was easy to understand and his knowledge of the site and history was exceptional. I highly recommend Mextours.
It is a place you should know, its part in history in importantisima, but do not expect much activity, the walk is flat with some steps but is moderate
Our guide and driver, Raul, was very knowledgeable and a good teacher/storyteller. The early departure meant that we missed the crowds and heat. For us, it was the perfect way to experience Monte Alban.
ALMOST 50 YEARS AGO, I VISITED THIS ARCHAEOLOGICAL PLACE, AND IT LOOKED WELL-MAINTAINED. NOW, IT LOOKS NEGLECTED, AND THE SIGNS AROUND THE PLACE DESCRIBING THE BACKGROUND OF EACH SECTION ARE IRRELEVANT AND WRITTEN WITHOUT "EMOTION". JUST GIVING COLD DATES AND NUMBERS. BESIDES, IT'S A DANGEROUS PLACE TO VISIT FOR ELDERLY PEOPLE AND THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS. THERE ARE NO HANDRAILS OR EASY TO CLIMB SIDE RAMPS. SAD.
Oscar was An excellent guide for the Mount Alban tour. He is very knowledgeable and friendly. Highly recommend.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I’m really glad you enjoyed the Monte Albán tour. It was a pleasure guiding you, and I hope to see you again on another adventure!
We learned SO much history on this tour and highly recommend it!!
Getting a sense of life in this city 2000 years ago was fascinating. Excellent guide. It’s about 2000 feet higher than Oaxaca city and I had a bit of trouble with that. But I’m still very glad I did it. (I do have very mild emphysema, btw)
We had a mixed experience. First we did the three-hour walking tour of Oaxaca with Balam. He was a very good guide and the tour was interesting and informative, although we would recommend that he also introduce people to the fascinating neighborhood of Jalatlaco. Balam then handed us off to his elderly father, Juan, for the half-day trip to Monte Alban and the full-day trip to Tlacolula, Hierve de Agua and Mitla. At Monte Alban, Juan explained to us in broken English that the signage and other tour guides (and Wikipedia and every other source we have seen) were all mistaken in describing the carvings as war captives being tortured. Instead, Juan told us, Monte Alban was a giant university built by the wise and peaceful Zapotecs, and the carvings were actually medical texts to help Zapotec medical students with difficult childbirths. Our trip to Mitla was less confusing, although we weren't sure what we should believe of Juan's explanations, and we enjoyed Hierve de Agua and the Tlacolula market.
Thank you very much for taking the time to share such a thoughtful and detailed review of your experience in Oaxaca. We are very glad to hear that you enjoyed the walking tour and found it interesting and informative. Oaxaca’s historic center is full of stories layered over centuries, and we always try to make those stories come alive for visitors. Thank you as well for the suggestion about visiting Jalatlaco it is indeed one of Oaxaca’s most fascinating neighborhoods and a wonderful place to explore. Regarding the carved monuments at Monte Albán, their interpretation has been debated by scholars for many decades. Because the Zapotec writing system has not yet been fully deciphered, many archaeological descriptions use the word “probably” when referring to the figures as war captives. Other interpretations have also appeared in academic literature, including one proposed by Mexican physician Mario Pérez Ramírez, who suggested that some carvings could represent medical knowledge, supported by osteological evidence and by the importance of medicine within Zapotec culture. One of the things we enjoy most about guiding in Oaxaca is sharing these different perspectives and encouraging curiosity about the remarkable civilization that built Monte Albán. We are very happy to hear that you enjoyed Hierve el Agua, Mitla, and the vibrant Tlacolula Market, all of which are truly special places in the region. Thank you again for traveling with Mexplorer Adventures. We appreciate your thoughtful comments and hope your time in Oaxaca left you with many memorable experiences.
