I had a great day trip to Mysore with my guide Varun, who was very nice and knowledgeable and had loads of interesting things to share with me - also I haven't met anyone during my trip to India speaking better English, so conversation was super easy. We met at a metro station and then took the train together to Mysore, where we got around by Tuk-Tuk because my time frame was somewhat limited - and also the weather during monsoon season was not always what you want for a nice walk. The train ride was nice and surely "something different" compared to some of the trains we're used to in Europe, so quite interesting. Although there are different categories and I believe the trains themselves also differ greatly, so probably you should discuss with your guide beforehand whether you're more interested in exoctic authenticity or comfort (like I did with Varun and he found the right train for me). In hindsight I should have bought more food/snacks from the onboard vendors, just for the experience. Regarding reliability: our train ride towards Mysore started more than 1 hour late, but arrived almost on time, while the train back to Bengaluru departed on time but arrived almost 1 hour late (and judging from the app that's not uncommon, so don't make any hard plans for the evening). In Mysore, we visited the Chamundi Hills incl. the beautiful Nandi statue (much nicer than the one in Bengaluru IMHO), then had a short lunch and shopping break (at much more reasonable prices than what I paid in Bengaluru and without the pushy staff) and then a guided tour through the amazing palace (the local guide was good, but actually I would have preferred Varun to do the tour, because we got along so well, he was able to customize towards my interests and as mentioned above spoke perfect [plus loud and clear] English). Due to my time constraints we skipped the market. All in all it was a nice trip that due to my own constraints sadly was a little shortened, and its value was greatly enhanced by having Varun as my guide. Although I'm now slightly addicted to Kirtimukhas thanks to him ^^
