On Saturday 19th September Whilst on holiday in Malta, We visited their National Aquarium in Qawra. The Aquarium was less than a 10 minute walk from our hotel.
We paid on the day & it was a total of 33 euro for two adults. Once down a flight of stairs, you entered the aquarium & it was absolutely amazing. So much to see & all with such detailed information, it was absolutely amazing. It took us approx 45 minutes to walk through it all but you can take as long as you wish, we arrived just after opening time (10am) & it wasn't busy at all.
Once back upstairs , we had the opportunity to purchase photo's they take of you on way in. We bought three framed ones (paper style that open like a card), for a total of 20.euro which we found excellent value & the quality was excellent. They also have a lovely gift shop which is really nice with some good gifts to take home.
Really nice visit & suitable for all ages. 10/10 from us.

recommended!
Small but very cute aquarium, interesting the fact that there were digital tablets for each tank such that one could obtain every useful piece of information regarding the animal one was observing, the only flaw being that it was only in English and one could not select a different language (or at least it seemed so to us). Very kind staff, every half hour or so a very interesting (albeit brief) explanation is held about some animals or some aspects regarding the aquarium and human-animal interactions. Restaurant note; lots of selection but prices a bit high, even if in line with restaurant prices here in Malta. Ultimately; a beautiful experience that we certainly recommend doing and supporting!

The fish, sharks shown…
….cartilaginous fish and invertebrates are interesting to look at, but overall rather unspectacular. Anyone who has already visited larger and more elaborate aquariums will therefore likely not be overwhelmed by the actual tanks.
Perhaps the whole thing is then more for school classes that want to experience the inhabitants of the Mediterranean live here. Among other things, there is an albino ray to see, which, however, no longer has a stinger. Perhaps in the past, simply too many visitors could not resist the temptation to dip their hand into the tank – who knows.
The feeding of the piranhas is also interesting. However, anyone expecting bloody pieces of meat and a corresponding spectacle will be surprised: The piranhas are actually served pieces of tofu. No joke. Apparently, things have become a bit more health-conscious even among piranhas.
By far the most spectacular thing, and for me the actual highlight of the visit, is the Discover Deep Experience. Here, a deep-sea dive is simulated in a cabin, and it is really very well done: During the supposed descent into ever greater depths, the cabin rumbles against rock ledges, through the outer windows you see the daylight increasingly fading, and finally, you seem to be in complete deep-sea darkness.
Gradually, various inhabitants of the deep sea appear in front of the windows and provide a surprisingly atmospheric and exciting experience. What finally happens at the very end will of course not be revealed here – just this much: It is worth experiencing the Discover Deep Experience yourself until the end.
On the upper floor, you can marvel at the locations of wrecks around Malta - the Junkers company is disproportionately represented with its combat aircraft in World War II. World War II is disproportionately represented. The wrecks of the minelayers and the victims of these operations are thought-provoking.
By the way, I liked the souvenir shop. Anyone looking for a souvenir for small children will almost certainly find what they are looking for here. From stuffed animals and toys to all sorts of other things related to fish and sea creatures, you can really get everything a child's heart desires.
Conclusion: A well-maintained but rather manageable aquarium that did not particularly impress me with its actual tanks. The Discover Deep Experience significantly enhances the visit, however.

We understand your comments regarding the size of the aquarium, particularly when comparing it with some of the much larger aquariums found internationally. The Malta National Aquarium is a more compact attraction, but within the facility we have 54 themed tanks housing around 250 species, with a particular emphasis on Mediterranean marine life alongside tropical species, sharks, rays, jellyfish, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates.
We would, however, like to clarify your comment regarding our white stingray and why she no longer has her tail. She was brought to us by local fishermen after being caught, and unfortunately her tail had been cut following the catch. This was therefore certainly not the result of visitors putting their hands into the tank or interfering with her.
Her unusual white colouration also means that her chances of survival in the wild would be significantly reduced, as she lacks the natural camouflage that would normally help protect a stingray. For this reason, she remains under the care and protection of our professional aquarist team at the Malta National Aquarium, where her health and welfare can be closely monitored.
We are very pleased that you highlighted the Deep Explorer as the standout part of your visit. It was designed to add a completely different immersive dimension to the aquarium experience, and it is great to hear that the journey into the deep sea, atmosphere and final surprise made such a strong impression.
We also appreciate your comments about the underwater heritage area, which was developed in collaboration with Heritage Malta to introduce visitors to Malta's remarkable underwater archaeological and maritime heritage, including the numerous wreck sites surrounding the Maltese Islands.

BUGIBBA Aquarium
Very beautiful experience at the Malta National Aquarium! The place is well organized, clean, and pleasant to visit. The aquariums are magnificent, with a beautiful variety of fish and marine species.
The visit is interesting for both adults and children, and the staff is welcoming and available. A nice activity to do with the family during a stay in Malta.
We had a very good time. I recommend this visit! 🇲🇹🐠🌊

Family friendly aquarium worth checking out if you are looking for something to fill an hour of your time. The restaurant was pretty good there as well.

Malta Aquarium
Good couple of hours at the aquarium but thought it would of been bigger and better considering this is malta national aquarium and location and sea life around island. But if your taken the kids they should enjoy experience.

A good trip
Just been around the aquarium really interesting and well organised.
A must is the lift experience very funny.
Having a good walk around and looking at everything takes about and hour and 10 minutes.
Go early as soon as it opens as it gets very busy .
Also stop and say hi to the stingray.

Worth visiting
Aquarium with attention to detail, wide variety of fish and aquatic plants and some reptiles. The tunnel is beautiful. Possibility to take photos and enjoy fun interactive experiences.

Great activity for families!
A fabulous trip the Aquarium. Both children thoroughly enjoyed their visit and enjoyed an ice cream at the end in the restaurant. Great service and reasonable prices for ice cream!

We note your comments regarding the size, noise levels and number of visitors. During peak periods, and particularly on days when the weather is less favourable, we can experience a significant increase in visitors as more people choose indoor attractions. This can naturally result in a busier and noisier environment than would normally be experienced at quieter times.
While the Malta National Aquarium is compact in size, we aim to provide a content-rich and educational experience. We have 54 themed tanks showcasing around 250 species, ranging from Mediterranean marine life to tropical fish, sharks, rays, jellyfish, reptiles and amphibians. Each tank also has an interactive information screen providing further details about the species on display.
The experience extends beyond the tanks themselves. Admission also includes the Deep Explorer immersive submarine simulator, the Heritage Malta underwater archaeology exhibition, the Digital Aquarium, as well as hourly educational talks delivered by our presenters throughout the day.
Regarding the duration and value of the experience, if a visitor spends just one minute in front of each of our 54 tanks, that alone already represents almost one hour. Once the Heritage Malta exhibition, Deep Explorer and the other educational and interactive elements are included, the complete visit can comfortably take well over an hour.
We do agree that visitors who prefer a quieter experience should, whenever possible, consider visiting outside the busiest periods or earlier in the day.
