Roy was an incredible guide. He is so passionate about the flora and fauna around monteverde. I feel like I learned so much about every plant, animal and insect we saw. He also was able to spot animals/birds and identify them instantly. He brought extra binoculars making it way easier to spot the wildlife. He was kind enough to screenshot all of the birds that we saw and send them to me after the tour. My family and I had such an amazing experience that we ended up having Roy guide us through Curicancha the next day. Couldn’t recommend a tour with Roy more!

Cloud Forest in September
It was a very nice experience! We expected to end up in a group but due to low season we had a private tour and the guide really took time to show us everything. Would definitely recommend!

We had a nice experience. Our guide Fernando knew a lot to tell about nature. Many beautiful animals are allowed to be spotted and receive explanations on various topics.

Great Experience With Knowledgeable Guide
Our guided tour with Roy was an excellent experience. Roy is very knowledgeable and explained a lot of things along with trail. We were hoping to see more wildlife, but that’s out of the control of Roy. We saw a small frog and a milk snake right at the beginning and then a lot of birds along the way. I would recommend this tour to others, but don’t expect to see much wildlife. We went in September.

There are better places to go
If you are staying in Monteverde, this would be okay to go to for the purpose of a hike. But if staying in San Jose, this is a complete waste of time and money. This is only a rainforest trail. Nothing else. Once you have walked on the Monteverde Cloud Forest trails for five minutes, you have seen it all. We saw three monkeys and no other animals. We did not see any birds at Monteverde Cloud Forest. However, across the street, there is a little gift shop and they have a collection of hummingbird feeders and you will see so many beautiful hummingbirds up close. That was the best part of the trip to Monteverde.

We have a birds watching tour as well if you are more interested on seeing more birds.
Is important to understand that we are not in a zoo.
Sometimes we see some animals sometimes not.
We want to see as many as possible.
But is nature.

Solid wildlife tour, great hummingbird garden, wide variability in whether there will be clouds
The park is very nice and it's a pleasant hike. Our guide was knowledgable, though he didn't spot quite as many animals as some of the guides on other hikes we did in Costa Rica. Most of the things he pointed out were plants.
The hummingbird garden is really awesome and worth a visit all on its own, with nearly a dozen brightly plumed hummingbirds of various species active there when we visited.
The star of the hike is, of course, the cloud forest. Unfortunately, there were actually no clouds on the day that we visited! Our guide explained that this is becoming increasingly common due to climate change and that the cloud forest climate is slowly migrating towards a rainforest climate.
Previous visitors to Monteverde described a magical experience where you begin below the clouds, hike up through the fog, and come out on top of the cloud layer where you can see the clouds beneath you, which was what we were hoping for, but alas, it was not to be on the day that we visited.
As a hike and wildlife tour, it wasn't bad, just not very different from the other hike/tours that you can do anywhere in Costa Rica. I'd give the tour 3 stars, the hummingbird garden 4 stars, and potentially 5 stars on a day where there are clouds.

Highly recommend this knowledgeable guide!
Roy was an incredible guide. We did his tour with two young kids and he was so patient and provided such an incredible overview of the plants, insects, birds. His keen eye, knowledge, and genuine respect for nature make him an excellent guide! Would highly recommend!

Excellent tour with Fernando
I took a tour with Fernando through the Monteverde reserve and it was excellent! I recommend this guide because he doesn't stop enlightening you by explaining things to you and he knows a ton of places where you are sure to find animals. I saw some really beautiful things with him and it was very much worth it even though it was raining the whole tour. Also, he is not in a hurry and you can tell that he enjoys what he does! I recommend him 100%! Thank you Fernando for sharing your wisdom!
