What a great way to see the the city and some incredible art! Cathleen was a fantastic guide. We’d recommend it to all our friends!
As a professional mosaicist, taking this tour with Cathleen had been on my list for a long time and she did not disappoint! Cathleen's knowledge, enthusiasm and organization of our full day tour was beyond my expectations, she shared so many insider stories and history, not only about the mosaics but NYC in general. My partner, who is not particularly 'artsy' also attended, and he was blown away by how much he enjoyed the experience, despite not having any background in mosaics. Cathleens down to earth approach, her shining personality and insights really changed his perspective - he said he will never look at a subway or mosaic the same way again! We cannot say enough about Cathleen, who really customized our day for us and gave us a fabulous highlight of our NYC trip!
this was amazing , a fantastic tour for all mosaic lovers , cathleen really knows her stuff and she fitted in so many mosaics.....highly recommend
In a city where you are nearly always compelled to look up, it was thoroughly refreshing to spend a day under ground and looking ahead at the walls. Cathleen leads a perfectly paced afternoon through the underground world of subway art. She was informative both about the artists and their processes used to create the works. Well worth putting on your checklist of “must do” activities when in NYC!
This was an amazing tour of a little known NYC attraction. Cathleen was extremely knowledgeable and organized describing the history of each mosaic as well as the artists and the techniques used to create the works. We saw a lot in four hours and she even added a stop that we heard about and wanted to see!
Only someone who is an artist, as our tour guide Cathleen is, can impart the knowledge about the skill and craftsmanship that create the modern day mosaics we saw. Underground we zigzagged from subway stop to subway stop to see an array of different styles. This tour is well worth taking.
Such a fantastic surprise, all these beautiful mosaics all over the NYC subway system! Cathleen leads a fun and informative tour of the wonderful artwork under New York's busy streets. Her knowledge is extensive and she provides helpful explanations of the history, inspiration, techniques and even fun stories for each station you visit. Highly recommended for a unique experience in a city with so many different things to do.
For anyone who is interested in art and especially mosaics...this experience is absolutely amazing! There are nearly 500 mosaics in the NYC subways and our 4 hour tour covered just a tiny bit in about 10 locations. We learned about the artists, their process, fabrication and installation from Cathleen Newsham who is so personable, talented and experienced. She got us through the subway system and off and on at each stop seamlessly all the while filling us in on history starting in Grand Central Station. And there was plenty of time to take photos and really study each piece up close! Such a unique experience! I highly recommend it and would do this again and again each time I'm in NYC!
Thank you! I'm so happy you enjoyed it and I'll keep you informed of future tours! You would probably enjoy my full day tour (with a lunch break at Junior's), where we explore some of the fabulous mosaics in lower Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx. I'll be adding some of those tour dates soon and will probably happen in the Spring and Summer.
It is not easy to see a lot of the wonderful mosaic art in the subway system and Cathleen's tour makes it possible to see a lot in a reasonably short period of time. She knows the artists and the fabricators and has even participated in some of the installations so you get a lot of information that is not otherwise readily available. Be prepared to deal with busy and stuffy stations and to get off and on the subway several times.
Cathleen Newsham knows a lot about mosaics and that knowledge shows up in her tour of the NYC subway system. In addition to showing us old and new mosaic features in the subway, she offered interesting facts about what we were looking at and historical information as well. She prepared the group prior to meeting us in Grand Central Station about water, restrooms, snacks and overall agenda. She had tips about getting around on the subway so that the tour kept moving even if certain lines weren't operational for some reason. We were able to hear the particulars of each stop as well as take a few minutes to examine the art up close and take photos. She provided as well general information about the process of displaying the art, information about the various artist, and her expertise allowed us to better understand and appreciate this medium. At the conclusion of the tour she sent everyone interested notes about what we'd seen and where in the system each was located. It is important to wear layers because the temperature in the subway fluctuates. Also wear comfortable shoes! There is a lot of walking too. Elevators are few and far between so one should easily be able to use the stairs in and out of the system.
