This basilica is considered as the "Mother Church of all churches in the world". It was founded by Emperor Constantine in the fourth century and was the seat of papacy from the fourth up to the 14th century before it was transferred to the Vatican. It is still considered as the Pope's cathedral as bishop of Rome. Today you can visit it and marvel at its architectural beauty while reminiscing the history behind it and the special role it played in the history of Christianity. Don't forget to visit the cloister adjacent to it (for a minimal pay) and the "Holy Stairs" just across the street.
