Excellent communication and smooth transfer from my Riad to the location. The tour guide was perfect and able to custom my fitness level to increase or lower difficulty. It’s so nice to eat lunch locally with Ahmed’s family and they are great hosts. I recommended you book with them directly for the easiest communication because they get filled up quick!
My husband and I (Americans) have done over a dozen hut to hut hikes around the world, mostly in the Alps. We were interested in trying the Atlas Mountains and after searching around on the Internet, I found this company and reached out directly to Ahmed. Ahmed was incredibly responsive and gave a lot of information about the trek. I invited some family members and some friends, and next thing I knew, 19 people had signed up for this adventure. I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but Ahmed gave me a lot of confidence, including details on the pricing - he asked for a comparatively small deposit so I figured the risk was pretty low. I tried to keep expectations low among the group, and I was a little worried with so many people putting their faith in me (Ahmed, but through me). Our group’s ages ranged from 22 to 64, all in reasonably good shape. The trek turned out to be an absolute home run. Ahmed delivered everything that he promised and so much more. Our amazing guides Lahsen and Mohamad showed up early at our Riyadh in Marrakesh and guided us to our vans, that drove us out to Imlil. We needed some extra sleeping bags and poles, and Ahmed organized all that in advance. Some of the people in our group needed to leave for the airport first thing on the last day, and Ahmed organized transport from a pretty remote location for those people, and also had the mules cart their suitcases through each destination along with all our supplies and food, etc. We had quite an entourage at each location - 3 guides (including Hamza, Ahmed’s lovely 18 year old son), mules, 5 muleteers, and 2 chefs. Most of the food traveled with us by mule as well. Every morning we were served a basic but tasty breakfast. Lunch was a delicious and varied spread, cooked by our personal chefs on the trail and laid out on mats for a lovely picnic gathering. Dinner was cooked by the entourage at each of the guest houses, with the supplies bought at the beginning of the trip and carried by mule. The guides brought delicious snacks that they offered at rest stops, and every afternoon we enjoyed afternoon tea and a snack in the guest house in the resting time after the hiking and before dinner. Best of all, we’ve got to know our guides and learned so much about Burger culture. The hikes were beautiful, we didn’t summit Mt Toubkal, but we got to see it and enjoy many beautiful spots, including a lovely waterfall. We were also pleasantly surprised by the guest houses. They are typical dorm accommodations (bring a sleeping sack and toilet paper!) , but because of our large group, we didn’t have to share a room with anyone, the bathrooms were perfectly fine, and we even had hot water and showers, although at the higher altitude place, that was somewhat limited (by time of day). One interesting thing to note is that unlike other places we have hiked there’s no alcohol offered on this trek. We all agreed that we didn’t mind this because it’s part of the culture, and we really enjoyed the ritual of taking tea four or five times a day, as is the local culture. The only thing I wish I had had more information about in advance was what the expectation for tipping. As it turned out, we had five muleteers, two chefs, and three guides, and Ahmed was behind the scenes, organizing everything, but he did not trek with us. At the end of the trek we tipped each individual person - I suggest the company add a page on their website about what is expected so people are prepared. The price of the trek is very reasonable, and the tips are well earned - bring cash (dirham) for this. If you have ever done a “Backroads” trip (or wanted to) this is a similar format- way less fancy and much more affordable - but just as amazing hospitality. I really can’t recommend it enough, and Trek Atlas (Ahmed) is the way to go!
Highly recommend Trek Atlas. Ahmed and his team are the best guides and truly care about providing a special experience. We spent 4 nights hiking in the Toubkal region and our guides were incredibly knowledgeable about the region. I hope to be back soon!
Loved it. If you are wondering if you should, just say yes.
I did a lot of research before booking a tour of the Atlas mountains for myself and my husband - and I kept coming across the same cookie cutter tours, until I found Trek Atlas with Ahmed. From reading about other people’s experiences I got the sense that this was a more authentic and real experience - and it was exactly that! Ahmed customized our day exactly to what we wanted, arranged everything from start to finish, and made for a perfect experience that we will never forget. We were picked up by a driver around 9am at our hotel in Marrakesh, and along the drive we made stops to grab a quick breakfast, see a local Argan Oil cooperative, and take some photos at scenic lookout points. Along the way our driver told us many interesting details and historical information about the area which made the drive all the better! We added a stop on the way to have the chance to ride camels away from the usual crowds. Ahmed arranged our visit with the driver, and it was perfect! Myself and my husband were the only tourists there. We got to ride camels and meet some baby camels as well! We carried on after that to Imlil where we met our local guide. We trekked along beautiful paths, wooded areas, man made streets, and back roads climbing into the mountains. Our guide shared the history of the area, stories of the mountains, and he also told us a lot about living in the area today! He brought us to see multiple waterfalls and beautiful viewpoints - all the while making sure we were going out our pace and customizing our journey to us. He found the perfect view points for stunning pictures and made sure we got some great ones for our memories! He even brought a snack of nuts - and extra sunscreen. Our lunch with Ahmed and his family was nothing short of spectacular - his wife prepared a stunning and vast assortment of dishes for us to try and we loved it all! If only our stomachs could hold more. We felt honoured that Ahmed invited us into his home and shared such a beautiful meal with us - my husband is still talking about the vegetable tagine that they made for us (it was amazing)! With our bellies full, we continued on our hike. Our guide gave us a choice of the long way or the short way - we chose the short way (but we will be back to see the long way another day). On our way down the mountain we saw another stunning waterfall and spectacular views we won’t soon forget - plus, we were able to take a break at a rug shop in the mountain and purchase a locally made rug as the perfect souvenir (thankfully it fit in my husband’s backpack). Our driver met us at the base of the mountain in Imlil again and we made our way back to Marrakech lulled in and out of sleep watching the scenery go by. We arrived back at our hotel around 17:30, with a day’s full of memories made. This tour was perfect in every way, and it is all thanks to the beautiful hospitality and care that Ahmed and his team put into their work. I am certain that one day we will return to Imlil and do a longer guide further into the mountains with Trek Atlas. Thank you for the wonderful visit!
We went on a day trek as a family of three (with our 14 year old daughter). Really great experience. Was looking for a trek close to Marrakesh and which wasn’t difficult to do. Beautiful walk up the mountains followed by a lovely lunch at a local village in the mountains. our guide Idris was excellent! Sharing loads of information along the way. Def recommend this trip. I am already planning an overnight trek with the same operator next summer.
Great experience. You'll get a nice long walk through beautiful scenery, and the local villages. The walk is not particularly challenging but it is a good idea to wear hiking shoes with good grip, as there are some areas of loose rocks. The local guide we had (Abdel) was great. Ahmed worked hard to make sure we had all the information we needed, and explained the process. He and his wife also host you for a nice lunch in their home. One thing to be aware of - if you are going for the single day hike, you will not be ascending the higher mountains, but its still really nice.
Incredible trip, perfect arrangement for a two day hiking experience in the Atlas Mountains. Generous and knowledgeable organizers and guide. If you would like to spend time in the Atlas Mountains and get a sense of the local culture, this is the trip to book with. Enjoyable, well organised, good communication, great food, comfortable sleeping arrangement. Top marks all round.
Two of us booked a 2 night/3 day hike at the end of March. It was a great way to get out of Marrakesh and see more of Morocco. Our guide Mohamed was amazing, very knowledgable about his local area and taught us so many things about his culture. Everything went perfectly - communication was great from the start, the transfers, food (tasty and lots of it!) and the daily routes were perfect. The guesthouses were simple as are in the valley villages, don’t expect luxury. But that was part of the charm of this experience. Thanks Trek Atlas.
We had an amazing experience on this hike. Our guide was friendly and caring, he helped us everywhere he could. The waterfalls we saw were incredible. They brought us peace and were a great change of pace from the bustling city of Marrakech. Eating at Ahmed's house to fuel up for the rest of the hike was a blessing. Ahmed and his family were welcoming and friendly. We had a spread of local food including rice, chicken, vegetable tagine, other vegetables, bread, soup and more. We even got some nuts and popcorn as a starter. We would definitely recommend this experience to anyone. It's great to get an inside view on the local people's lives, away from the tourist hotspots.
