I arrived in Addis Ababa carrying the weight of one of the worst travel days of my life. A cancelled flight with Ethiopian Airlines, a frustrating experience at the Skylight hotel, and no cell service to resolve the cascading problems—I was stressed, exhausted, and frankly, not in the best headspace. You could say my presence in that car was radioactive. Henok didn't miss a beat. He met my mood with warmth and immediate practical help, offering his own phone so I could call Italy and start untangling the mess I'd inherited. But more than that, he was genuinely upbeat throughout the entire tour, sharing stories and insights about Ethiopia and its people with real passion. He made me laugh when I needed it most. What struck me most was his flexibility. When I mentioned a few things I was interested in seeing, he didn't just nod politely—he actually pivoted the tour to include them. We could have easily stretched those four hours into six or seven if I'd had the time, and he would have happily made it happen. Instead, he understood I needed to get back to the airport to handle unfinished business, and he got me there with everything I wanted to see intact. His driver was fantastic too—skilled, attentive, and part of making the whole experience feel seamless and safe. Sometimes you take a tour and see some sights. Sometimes you take a tour and have an experience that reminds you why travel matters. Henok gave me the latter on a day when I really needed it. He's exactly the kind of guide who makes you believe you chose the right place to visit. Highly recommended. Ask for Henok.
We generally really enjoyed the tour! I would like to give 4.5/5 stars. We saw exciting places. At our explicit request, we were also able to go to the bar of the tallest building, which was the absolute highlight. This should be included in every tour! What we did not like so much was that the tour was advertised as a private tour, so we would be flexible with the program. Unfortunately, it was not a private tour; instead, we were grouped with another participant. As a result, the price/performance ratio was not so great.
Our tour was very interesting. Guide Henok gave us a lot of information about country and cultrure providing many details. We had local lunch and it was more delicious when we expected)
Thank you for sharing your experience! It’s always great to hear about memorable trips and recommendations. Looking forward to more insights!
Henok was an excellent guide.
Thank you for sharing your experience! We appreciate your feedback and hope to see you again soon.
The very best tour you could wish to have. I could give 10 stars i would. Henock was so passionate and knowledgeable about Ethiopia. The driver was extremely professional. They will adjust the tour to suit your schedule and interests. Superb.
Excellent private tour, 100% customizable, we only went where I wanted and the pace I wanted. Covered pretty much the most interesting places in Addis Ababa. Henok is a very knowledgeable and passionate guide, highly recommended.
Thank you so much, Lanre, for your wonderful review and recommendation. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your Addis Ababa layover tour and that the experience was customised to your interests and pace. It was our pleasure hosting you, and we hope to welcome you back to Ethiopia again soon!
Addis, a vibrant city on the rise. There's construction everywhere. The people are nice and we mostly felt safe. However, we explored the area around Merkato with a guide. With the Ride app, you can book a taxi cheaply without having to worry about being ripped off. I am very curious to see how the city develops!
Dear Christoph, Thank you so much for choosing GishAbay Ethiopia Tours and for sharing your impressions of Addis Ababa! It is an exciting time to be here, and we appreciate your note on the warmth of the Ethiopian people. We’re also glad you found the Ride app tips and our guided tour of Merkato helpful—navigating the largest open-air market in Africa is definitely an adventure best shared with a local expert! Like you, we are eager to see how the city continues to transform. We hope to welcome you back in the future to witness that development firsthand. Best regards,
The guide, Barik, and our driver did a great job. He can s very knowledgeable of Ethiopian history and showed us all of the sites.
On February 28, my Etihad flight from Cochin to Chicago via Abu Dhabi was canceled due to the Middle East airspace closure related to the regional conflict. With many flights quickly selling out, I scrambled for alternatives and managed to reroute through Mumbai on Air India, followed by an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Chicago. The itinerary came with a 15-hour layover in Addis Ababa. Ethiopian Airlines provided a transit visa and hotel room, but spending daylight hours in a hotel in a city I had never visited felt like a missed opportunity. So I booked a same-day private city tour. Within an hour, my guide and driver arrived, and the three of us set out to explore Addis Ababa. I was surprised by how modern and developed much of the city felt. The highlight was visiting the National Museum of Ethiopia, where I saw Lucy, the famous 3-million-year-old hominid fossil that helped reshape our understanding of human evolution. Nearby was Selam, an even older and remarkably preserved child fossil — a humbling reminder of how far back our human story goes. We also visited Merkato, the massive open-air market often described as the largest in Africa. Calling it a second-hand market barely captures it — it felt more like a cathedral of recycling, where everything imaginable finds a second or third life. Along the way I experienced Ethiopian coffee culture, which is almost ceremonial. I paid about $100 for the private tour, probably slightly above local prices, but the experience was excellent — especially considering it was arranged the same day. If you ever have the chance, I highly recommend a stopover in Addis Ababa with Ethiopian Airlines and a quick city tour. What could have been a long layover became a fascinating glimpse into one of the cradles of human history.
Fantastic tour with Henok as the guide and Mesfine driving. Henok is a wealth of knowledge and information on history and general culture. From the history museum and market to the Entoto mountain and the delicious show of Ethiopian cuisine and tradition. Thank you very much!
Thank you so much for the kind words! We’re delighted that Henok and Mesfine made your tour memorable. Sharing our culture and history is our passion, and we're happy you enjoyed every moment. Come back and visit us anytime! Warm regards, GishAbay Ethiopia Tours
