Two days is how Versailles stops being a queue and becomes a town. One day for the château and its gardens, one for the Trianon estate and the streets Louis XIV built around his palace. Here is the split, with the tours worth booking.

Day 1: the château

A guided palace tour in the morning, then the gardens all afternoon — ideally a Saturday or Sunday between April and October, when the fountains play.

Day 2: the estate by bike

Rent a bike, ride the Grand Canal to the Grand Trianon, the Petit Trianon and the Queen’s Hamlet, and picnic on the grass as the locals do.

The town itself

The Marché Notre-Dame, the Carrés Saint-Louis, the King's Kitchen Garden still supplying restaurants, and the tennis court where the Third Estate swore not to disband in June 1789.
