I am a solo traveler, enjoy wines of all type and have a sense of adventure. I attended a 'wine tasting meetup' listed on the app with Tony in Belgrade, Serbia last Tuesday night. It was a very intimate group; one couple from Dubai, myself and Toby, just the four of us. After meeting at a central location we walked for about 10 minutes to a beautiful wine bar situated close to the waterfront in Belgrade. The wine bar was located just below Brankov most (bridge). The space was small but well appointed, with interesting looking bottles of wine from all over the Balkans. We enjoyed the very friendly bartender, who new to working there did her best to share what she knows about the wines. The place was relatively empty as we met at 18:00 which is on the early side here for this party town. We ended up sharing between the four of us 5 varieties of wine! Wow! Two whites, one methode champagne and two reds. All the wines were from the Balkans primarily from Serbia. Also introduced and devoured during the tasting were two varieties of cheese and meat plates both with a heap of olives. These palate cleansers were served without bread. It was a delicious complement to the tasting. Toby is a very fun guy and someone who is doing many tours a week related to taking tourists to bars, clubs, rakija and wine tasting. This 'tour' was all about fun and conversation. There are really no tasting notes or any real in-depth knowledge of the varietals we sampled other than using our own experiences of wine tasting and sharing stories about drinking wine around the world. We went straight from bottle to bottle, next!...man it was a lot of fun. Toby had other fun facts and tips to share with us about this amazing city. The conversation was centered on where and what to do in Belgrade, about the guests' backgrounds and storytelling. I thoroughly enjoyed his company, as well as the other couple's engaging conversation spending about 2 1/2 hours together tasting the wines. I say...GO! As long as you are not looking for something formal but feel like an adventure exploring Balkan wines for fun. Ziveli!
