BEST. TRIP. EVER.

AMAZING!!! This is literally the best trip I have ever been on. Our guide, Henry, was beyond amazing. There are not words to describe how wonderful he was. Our Chef, Julio, made the best food on our 5 day/4 night trek. Yefet was so kind and did such a great job with all his duties. Everything was better than I expected it to be. I cannot stop talking about the trip now that I am back home. If you ever get the chance to travel here and take a guided tour, please consider Salkantay Trekking.

Great Trip—Fantastic Guide!!

Our five-day trek to Machu Picchu was truly the trip of a lifetime, and one of the biggest reasons for that was our incredible guide, Nico. From the very beginning, Nico demonstrated exceptional professionalism, leadership, and genuine care for every member of our group. He was organized, knowledgeable, patient, and always one step ahead, making sure every detail was taken care of so we could simply enjoy the experience. His passion for the mountains, the history, and the local culture was contagious, and he brought every part of the journey to life with fascinating stories and insights. What really set Nico apart was all the little things he did that often go unnoticed but made a huge difference. He constantly checked in to make sure everyone was feeling well at the high elevations, adjusted the pace so everyone felt included, offered encouragement during the challenging climbs, and always had a positive attitude and a smile. He anticipated our needs before we even had to ask, making the entire trek feel effortless despite the demanding terrain. His attention to detail was outstanding. Every day was well planned, every transition was seamless, and he made sure we had the best viewpoints, the perfect photo opportunities, and a deeper appreciation for the incredible landscapes around us. His calm confidence gave everyone peace of mind, and it was obvious that our safety and enjoyment were always his highest priorities. The trek itself was absolutely breathtaking, with stunning scenery, unforgettable moments, and a perfect balance of challenge, adventure, and enjoyment. From the campsites to the meals to the incredible sense of accomplishment each day, the overall experience was fantastic from start to finish. By the time we reached Machu Picchu, we felt like we hadn’t just completed an amazing trek, we had shared an unforgettable adventure with someone who genuinely loves what he does. However, our guide Nico’s enthusiasm, humour, kindness, expertise, and professionalism turned an already incredible destination into an extraordinary experience. If you’re fortunate enough to have Nico as your guide, you’re in the best hands possible. He is an outstanding leader and one of the finest guides I’ve ever had anywhere in the world. I cannot recommend him highly enough. Thank you, Nico, for making this journey unforgettable… we’ll be talking about it for years to come!

Amazing trip of a lifetime

This was my first time doing a guided trek so I was apprehensive about how it would be, but Wilo was the best guide I could have asked for! He was very cognizant of everyone in our group of 8 and was considerate of our different hiking paces and provided amazing backstory and details about the sights we saw and the flora/fauna along the way. The food that the cooks made (Juan Carlos and Antonio) was so delicious and it was so impressive that they were considerate of our appetites at higher altitudes. One of our group members had a birthday during the trek, and the chefs made a birthday cake to celebrate which was so kind of them. I appreciated that our group was so small so that we could all get to know each other so well, and I’ve definitely made some friends for life from this trek. Overall would recommend this trek to my friends and family! The price initially seemed a bit high to me, but after completing the trek I can say that it was worth every penny since everything ran so smoothly and everyone involved with Salkantay Trekking was so helpful, knowledgeable, and considerate.

Would do again

Carlos (the mountain king) was incredibly knowledgeable and open to answering our questions. He readily adapted plans based on how the people were feeling and allowed us to go ahead if we were feeling good on stretches that were single paths. I learned a ton, and he was incredibly funny. I would absolutely recommend him to anyone doing this trek and would request him should I be able to for another trek. The food by Mauro was fantastic and plentiful, and I always looked forward to it.

Awe inspiring and challenging!

My husband, brother and sister-in-law and I did the Salkantay premium private 5 day/4 night trek to Machu Picchu beginning of June. Three of us are in our 60's and one in their 50's. We are from Ohio at sea level so our big concern was managing the altitude but we prepared by strength training, running/hiking, the stairmaster and doing some hike's in CO. We stayed in Cusco three nights to acclimate but the altitude hit us hard. Taking Diamox at night helps immensely. It made us sleepy so we found best to take at night. Staying hydrated along with electrolytes was a must. Somehow we missed our ride from the airport to our airbnb from Salkantay treking so we used a taxi (very inexpensive) and returning to the airport we chose to use the hotel for transfer instead of Salkantay trekking. Doing the premium private trip let us adjust our itinerary based on how we were feeling. Alan our guide was very attentive to how we were feeling and always provided options for each days trek. Most days we were up at 4am and slept in the van for the drives. The first day one of our party was had a cold so we chose to skip part of the hiking. It can be dusty (of which the dust can have horse and mule poop because they share the same path as the hikers) when hiking so prepare for protection with a mule to cover your nose and mouth and sunglasses for eye protection. The high altitude also comes with dry air so hydrating your nose with ointment helps to not only trap dust but with comfort. The first night we stayed in the domes and we were excited to see some stars but unfortunately it was cloudy and in fact in rained during the night and it snowed on the mountains. It was very cold in the dome with no heat but under the blankets it was cozy. No hot showers the first night or hot water. Willfredo was our chef and he did a phenomenal job of cooking very fresh food with Peruvian flair. We were never hungry as we were also provided a snack bag for our trekking. The view of the snow covered mountains the start of the second day was breathtaking. We rode horses (hand guided by our muleteer) 6 miles up to the pass at 15k feet. So glad we rode the horses because it was fun to relax and enjoy the view. And once at the top we had 6 miles left to hike downhill to our next accommodation. The top of Salkantay mountain was breathtaking! First time we were ever at 15k feet! The trail down is rocky with loose rocks and it is difficult to have too fast of a pace because of this. The second night lodging had beautiful accommodations with a beautiful view however due to recent landslides they were running on a generator so the power was off and on. Bring a headlamp and or flashlight to see. Their was hot water for a brief shower but was unable to use a hairdryer due to the power issue. About the landslides: this happens during the rainy season and the repairs start once the rainy season is over. We did have precarious moment crossing over a recent landslide the first day. So it would be good to ask ahead of time if there are any power issues or any of the routes are changed because of any landslides. The third day we chose to ride in a vehicle instead of hike to the coffee plantation and staying at the jungle domes that night we felt great with more heat and lower elevation. Willfredo made a delicious cake for my brother's birthday for dinner that night. We went to the hot springs that day and it was beautiful but there were no-see-ums biting us when we got out - natural bug spray worked well to keep them away. Bring your own wet wipes and toilet paper. Some toilets along the way have toilet paper but will need to pay a couple of Solas to use. Plan on drinking only bottled water. Our chef boiled water for us each night to fill our water bladders and bottles for the next days hike. We got to hike on a portion of the Inca trail on the fourth day and it was less rocky and easier to go at a faster pace if we wanted. The fourth night we were staying in Aguas Caliente in a clean, warm hotel. Some other hikers were able to get some laundry done at the hotel. Felt like luxury! The town was so charming with lots of opportunities to shop. Our guide Alan arranged massages for two of us in town and it probably was the best massage I had especially for my extremely sore calf muscles! Machu Picchu was the prize to see on the 5th day and Alan was very knowledgeable about the history - it was fascinating! We did see the sunrise over Machu Picchu but not over the sun gate. That would have been an extra hike to see that. Bring layers to put on and take off - the temperature varies. And although we didn't have any major downpours while hiking we were prepared with rain gear. All the restaurants we ate at were top notch. The food portions in Peru are generous - very large! Overall - this was a trip of a lifetime and I am proud of us for conquering it in our 60's! Thanks again to Alan for his patience and for Willfredo for the awesome food and our muleteers and drivers for supporting us. The memories will last forever!

Trip of a lifetime

It’s hard to find the words to express how much I loved this trip. This was my first time doing a multi day trek and although it was definitely challenging at times, I would do it all over again in a heartbeat! I learned so much about Peruvian food, flora , wildlife, landscapes, culture and history from my amazing guide Porfirio. He has so much love and pride for both his country and his job and it was a pleasure to listen and learn from him. He also definitely kept the spirits of my group high during the tougher parts of our trek and was there to encourage us and make us laugh everyday. The campsites were so beautiful and comfortable and everyday we would be excited to see where we would be sleeping next. I have dietary requirements and both Porfirio and Filipe our chef went above and beyond to ensure I had delicious meals everyday. This is a trip I will remember and talk about forever, if you’re thinking about booking it, do it!

Unbelievable scenery in Peru

Wow what a trip! I've had my eye on the Salkantay Trek since 2009 and it finally happened! From the minute I made contact with the company and sent an initial inquiry I was impressed. Setting up the trek, adding activities, adding hotel nights, asking for restaurant recommendations...everything was fantastic! The trek...our guide was Fredy. He felt like family by the end of the trek. He had a wide knowledge of the Incas and the land in Peru. I enjoyed his enthusiasm about his ancestors and his country. He was so excited to share it with us. Onto the trek itself. This wasnt easy! The altitude coupled with the lack of sleep from a busy itinerary made for challenging days. We took Diamox and im glad we did. We live in Colorado and regularly hike around 12-14k feet and live full time at 7500ft. The diamox made me feel like this was just another hike. I felt like I was breathing and working hard but not any different than any other hike. I didnt get that dizzy "out of it" feeling i often get at the top of a 14er either. It was fantastic! We got the tingly fingers and anything carbonated tasted weird but besides that no real side effects for us. I would highly consider taking it if you are hiking. The biggest challenge is you sleep high the first night. Be prepared for the altitude and dont let it ruin your trek! Lots of water too. The views...wow!! Holy cow! The first camp had more stars than I've ever seen in my life. The glaciers were lit up by the moon around 1am and looked amazing. The second camp was very beautiful and we had private bathrooms here. Our guide Fredy also called ahead and arranged massages for us in our domes when we arrived. Amazing! We didnt have power for most of the night but we had hot water. No big deal for us. The jungle domes on night 3 were beautiful and luxurious. We also visited the hot springs this day too. On night 4 we stayed in aguas calientes and Fredy arranged more massages, an amazing dinner, and a pisco sour show. So much fun! The hike on day 4 was the toughest for me with the heat and humidity. Along the way we also tried delicious fruit (maracuay was our fav) and stopped at a coffee farm. The following morning was sunrise at Machu Picchu. Wow! So beautiful! Again Fredy was full of information about the ruins and we left packed full of knowledge. The train ride back to cusco was loud and a bit obnoxious (we wanted to nap) and then it was followed by a long drive. We were exhausted by the time we returned. The food. Our chef was amazing!! The amazon giant! The food was incredible. We didnt have a single meal we were disappointed with. Absolutely amazing job. We also loved the tea at the top of Salkantay Pass. We did the andean explorer and had the city tour and sacred valley tour before salkantay and then had rainbow mountain and ausangate 7 lakes after. It was a jam packed itinerary with not a lot of sleep. All of the mornings were very early (4am pickup) and often not having dinner until 8pm. We had such a wonderful time but are still catching up on sleep. I would highly recommend this trip, this company, and our guide Fredy to anyone considering Peru. Weird things..the domes weren't consistent with soap, shampoo etc. Bring your own shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. There arent a lot of hooks or places to hang wet items. It was tough to get things to dry. Bring a loofah! There arent wash cloths in the bathrooms. Bring wipes/paper for the toilets. Not all places had paper available. Not all places had toilet seats either. Be prepared to hover. Bring hand sanitizer. A lot of the bathrooms along the way didnt have soap. Bring layers! I had on everything from a tank top to 5 layers on during the coldest days. Make sure you have gloves! I wish I had brought hand warmers too. Bring bug spray! My husband had over 20 bites in about 20 seconds after the hot tub from no see ums.
