Review of Private Chichén Itzá Tours with Tantum Travel For many travelers, visiting Chichén Itzá is a true bucket list experience. As one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, it is one of Mexico's most iconic attractions and a place that should be on every traveler's itinerary when visiting the Cancun area. As owners of a travel agency in the United States, we are always searching for exceptional local tour companies that deliver outstanding service and value. Value does not always mean choosing the cheapest option. Sometimes paying a little more results in a dramatically better experience. After researching several tour providers, we discovered Tantum Travel. Their consistently positive reviews, combined with very competitive pricing for a private tour, caught our attention and ultimately convinced us to give them a try. There are certainly no shortages of ways to visit Chichén Itzá. Large group tours depart Cancun every day carrying 30-45 passengers. While those tours can be economical, they often involve crowded buses, multiple stops, shopping detours, and a less personalized experience. We decided that if we were going to visit one of the world's most important archaeological sites, we wanted to do it right. That decision proved to be one of the best choices we made during our time in Cancun. Our day began with a prompt 7:30 a.m. pickup by our guide, Asis. We immediately appreciated the comfort of traveling in a private, air-conditioned van reserved exclusively for us. The vehicle was stocked with cold drinks and snacks, and throughout the day we felt more like valued guests than customers. What truly separated this experience from other tours, however, was Asis himself. Asis is not your typical tour guide. His extensive travel experience and professional background working at Mayan archaeological sites throughout Mexico and Central America provided a level of expertise we never expected. His knowledge of Mayan civilization, regional history, archaeology, and local culture transformed what could have been a simple sightseeing tour into a fascinating educational experience. When we arrived at Chichén Itzá, that expertise became even more valuable. Rather than simply pointing out landmarks, Asis brought the ancient city to life through detailed explanations, historical context, and stories that helped us better understand the significance of what we were seeing. He tailored the pace and content of the tour to our interests while ensuring we experienced the site's most important highlights. As we walked through the ruins, we couldn't help but notice the large tour groups moving from location to location under the hot sun. Many visitors struggled to hear their guides or keep up with the group. We were grateful to have a much more personal experience that allowed us to ask questions, take our time, and truly appreciate the site. On the return trip to Cancun, we asked Asis if he knew of a local taqueria where we could enjoy authentic Mexican food. We weren't interested in the large tourist restaurants that cater to bus tours serving chicken nuggets and pasta. We wanted something local. Once again, he delivered. The place he selected was exactly what we were looking for. Great food, a welcoming atmosphere, and an authentic experience that became another highlight of our day. Sometimes the unplanned stops become the most memorable parts of a trip. We would strongly recommend Tantum Travel and Asis to anyone considering a visit to Chichén Itzá. The combination of personalized service, exceptional historical knowledge, comfortable transportation, and genuine hospitality made this one of the best tours we experienced during our time in Mexico. In fact, we were so impressed that we are already planning to use Tantum Travel again to explore the cenotes and Mayan ruins around Tulum. If you are looking for a private Chichén Itzá experience that goes beyond simply checking a box on your travel itinerary, Tantum Travel is a company we would confidently recommend.
It was a great excursion; we were there very early and had Chichen Itza almost to ourselves. The drive was very comfortable and lasted only about 2 hours. Our guide was fluent in several languages and explained everything very well. I was with my 19-year-old son, and he also enjoyed the tour. The day before, we had been diving in the cenotes, so we wanted a tour that focused solely on Chichen Itza. All in all, we were very satisfied.
Asis was an amazing tour guide. He went above and beyond to make the 2.5 hours there and 2.5 hrs back to our hotel pleasant with all of the interesting info about Mexico’s, Mayan and Yucatán Peninsula’s history. We got to the ruins just in time before the crowds hit. There Asis gave us a nice informative tour of the ruins. Definitely book this tour, you won’t be disappointed!
An amazing trip to Chichén Itza, would highly recommend. We opted for the “express” half day tour as we were travelling with our toddler and goes to show you can do the tour without having to make it the 12+ hour day others are advertising! Our guide was Asis and we could not rate him highly enough. He was knowledgeable not just about the Mayan history, but shared lots of local knowledge on the drive there. The start isn’t as early as the big tour buses but you still get there early and can enjoy it being quieter and cooler. Admission fee is included in this tour which was also a plus compared to some of the other private tours we researched. Although this was the express tour, it didn’t feel rushed and we got to experience everything we wanted to see.
We had an amazing trip today, absolutely outstanding. Our guide, Limbert, is a very safe driver. He is exceptionally knowledgeable and we found out so much about the history of Mexico, the Mayan people and Chichen Itza. It was so good we booked another trip with him as our guide to Tulum
While the logistics of the tour were fine and the guide was polite, the historical commentary was fairly basic and, at times, inaccurate. Given the cost of the private tour, especially at a site as significant as Chichén Itzá, we would have expected a stronger command of the history and cultural context. The experience would benefit from more thorough preparation and more precise explanations.
Limbert was an excellent guide! We were picked up on time, and learned about the area on the way to Chichen Itza. Once we arrived at the site we were able to see all of the amazing buildings and ruins. Limbert was able to explain the history along with context and the cultural significance of Chichen Itza. Afterwards, Limbert took us on a quick stop at a local market n that was wonderful. All in all a great day!
Tour guide was great , smooth experience and communication , recommend to all, with families and kids
Today we visited Chichen Itza and had the most incredible experience. Jesus was our tour guide and he made an incredible day even more incredible! He was full of local, historical and archeological knowledge, beyond belief. He got us in quickly, shared his Mayan culture and expertise from start to finish. We had an epic time learning about the history and culture of the Mayan people, plus he provided snacks and beverages constantly. After visiting the site (which is one of the best places we’ve ever visited), he took us to a local restaurant where we were welcomed with real Mexican cuisine and an ambience that will forever stay fondly in our memories. I highly recommend this experience and company. It was the cheapest we could find and have no complaints whatsoever. Ask for Jesus, he’s an absolute legend. We’ve made a gorgeous friend and can’t thank him enough. Book now for the trip of a lifetime. Thanks Tantum, thanks Jesus and thanks Yucatán. This was the best Christmas we’ve ever had! 🙏
Gulaziz Gulmirzoev took us on our private tour. We only wanted to go to chicen itza. My wife, myself and our 2 sons 12 and 16. His knowledge of the history and the Mayan culture is outstanding. We are really glad we got Gulaziz Gulmirzoev. Kept us and the kids engaged with fascinating facts and story’s. Thank you. The car was fully a/c with tv (you don’t need them) drinks, snacks and a great guide in the front. This is a once in a lifetime for most and it did not disappoint.
