Icy Strait Village Tour and Crab Feast

Description
Join us for an Alaskan village tour and crab feast! Our locally owned and operated tour is your chance to form a deeper connection. We will teach you how we catch, cook, and crack our delicious local Alaskan dungeness crab. We will also take you around the village and to our favorite foraging spot to show you a little of how we survive and thrive in this remote paradise.

Itinerary
The first stop is the dock in the village of Hoonah. This is where we keep our commercial crabbing boat and our morning catch of crab. Pick out your fresh crab as we answer any questions you might have about Alaska commercial fishing and crabbing. We fish for pink salmon to use as bait for our commercial crabbing. All the gear is on board so we can give you a demonstration on how it works right at the dock.
The next stop is the deck over the water at Hoonah Beach House. This is just a quick stop to put our crab on ice for later, and maybe use the restroom if necessary. We will be returning to this location later for the crab feast!
The next stop is some forested private property just outside the village. We occasionally see coastal brown bears here, so have your camera ready. This is where Srisa and I pick the wild Alaska berries you will be enjoying in your dessert at the crab feast. We also have a small garden and orchard. We enjoy talking about what it takes to survive and thrive in our remote location.
Next, it's back to the village to see our friends at the carving shed. This is your chance to watch local Tlingit master carvers craft totem poles from yellow cedar logs.
The final stop is the deck at Hoonah Beach House for some fresh crab! The crab we iced down earlier is now ready to be cooked and prepared. Relax and watch as we show you the local way to cook crab. Most people have never tried crab fresh off the boat. Typically, crab shacks serve pre cooked, frozen and re-heated crab. Even the ones that advertise "fresh". Not us! This is the real deal, and you won't believe the difference. Most people tell us it's the best crab they have ever had.

This was truly a unique experience. Todd and his wife live here. He drove us to their place where they brought crabs from the live trap back to the house after which he gave us a tour of the area with so much information about living on the edge of the grid. When we finished the tour, we went back to the house where his wife had prepared the Dungeness crabs and homemade Thai fried rice followed by a cheesecake with a homemade huckleberry jam. I highly recommend this tour as unique from most tours.
This was a wonderful experience. Hoonah is a quaint little village and you will get the flavor of Alaskan life here and how people live. The host has a wonderful little restaurant where they crab. They demonstrate the crabbing process (we were there during dungeness season). Theresa is a fabulous cook and prepares a meal to die for. I really enjoyed this intimate excursion and the hosts were fabulous!
Todd and his wife are very accommodating. Very nice tour of the town and his crabbing operation. Food was very good! Don't forget the special sauce (I liked mine extra spicy). One caution, all you can eat equals one whole crab.
We had the best experience with this excursion. The couple were super nice and very informative. The experience with being able to hold the live crab. The food was magnificent. We would love to come back and stay in their Airbnb. Thank you guys.
This tour is a small group. The food and experience is awesome. We had a wonderful time and highly recommend
This was an amazing peek into life in Hoonah! The hosts were so friendly, informative and generous. The fresh crab and honeysuckle dessert were delicious. Well worth the money and such a great experience. Highly recommend!
Absolutely amazing morning with Tom and Theresa. Tom picked us up at Icy Strait and we headed to Hoonah. Stopped at the beach to pick out our freshly caught crabs and then headed out for a tour of the town and Theresa’s garden. Learned about how people survive and thrive in this isolated community. Headed back to the Hoonah Beach House for a delicious lunch of fresh Dungeness crab and fried rice. Delicious homemade dessert! Just an incredible experience!
This was a great activity with many surprises. Todd was a great host, showing how to catch a cook crabs, how he lived and interacted with other locals Do yourself a favour and book this quirky tour. You will love it!
This was a true gem. The tour is capped at just 14 people, which keeps the whole experience intimate and relaxed. Watching our crab pulled live from the water before we sat down to eat it was something we won't forget. The owners open up their space and share their story in a way that feels genuinely welcoming, not touristy. The crab was phenomenal, and the Thai Tea, Rice and Sauce completely surprised us. Our hostess was wonderful. Absolutely worth every minute.
Delicious food and excellent company. Learned a lot about how life goes on this remote island. Bring your curiosity and appetite, nothing like fresh steam crab and a strong glass of Thai Iced Tea!
