This enclosure for archaeological remains at Ephesus elegantly reconciles historic conservation with accessibility for visitors. The site of a succession of great ancient civilizations, Ephesus, on the south-west coast of modern Turkey, embodied a peculiarly fertile synthesis of architecture and culture. In 356BC the Greeks built the Artemesium (a colossal Ionic temple dedicated to Artemis the fertility goddess) which was one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. During the 2nd century BC, Ephesus was the fourth largest city in the eastern Roman Empire, famous for its Artemision, the Library of Celsus and its medical school..

The Temple of Artemis is known as one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. It has been built in the areas of Ephesus on a flat area which has over the centuries turned into a swamp. If you visit Ephesus today, you can only see the ruins of the foundations of this marvelous construction of the Hellenistic Age, entirely made of marble and full of sculptured columns' capitals and shafts. The most beautiful remaining of this temple are today exhibited in the London British Museum. The oldest remaining found date back till the 6th century BC. It was surrounded by 36 huge columns, later enlarged upon the orders of the Lydia King, Kreisos, during the 6th century BC. Most of the exhibits in the London British Museum belong to this period.

Admission included30 min

At this charming and well-organised museum, there are not only findings from the ongoing excavations at Ephesus archeological site, but also the artifacts from the Cukurici Mound, the basilica of St John, and the Temple of Artemis. At one of the sections, one can see a wide collection of coins dating back to when money was first used in history.

Great private tour with friendly, knowledgeable, and fun guide!

We had an excellent full day tour with Mehmet. He was extremely knowledgeable about all the sites we visited (and about related information as well too). He was enthusiastic, friendly and went above and beyond every step of the way. We highly highly recommend a tour with him if you have the opportunity. We really appreciate the way he catered the tour and the information he shared specifically to our interests.

Knowledge is Power!!

We had an incredible experience with our guides, Ahmet and Nagi. From the moment we met them, it was clear they were passionate about sharing their knowledge and their culture. Our visit to Ephesus was fascinating. They brought the ancient city to life by explaining not only what we were seeing, but also the many layers of history that shaped it, from the Hellenistic period through the Roman Empire and its eventual decline. Their knowledge was impressive and they answered every question with enthusiasm and detail. One of the things that stood out most was learning that they both studied tourism, history and hospitality in school to become professional guides. Their dedication to their craft was evident throughout the entire day. They were engaging, informative and genuinely cared about making sure everyone had a memorable experience. We also visited a traditional Turkish rug workshop where we learned about the artistry, craftsmanship and history behind handwoven rugs. It was much more than a shopping stop. It gave us a real appreciation for an important part of Turkish culture. Our final stop was a sheep leather workshop where we were introduced to the quality and craftsmanship of Turkish leather. The presentation was excellent and helped us understand what makes these products so special before we decided to purchase some beautiful, high-quality pieces. The day flew by because it was so engaging. We left feeling like we had learned so much about Turkey’s history, culture and traditions. Thank you, Ahmet and Nagi, for making our visit one of the highlights of our trip. We would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Ephesus.
