En herrgård och ett mord. En av de mest besökta historiska hemmen i Minnesota för sin storhet och prakt, Glensheen Mansion är också platsen för ett berömt Minnesota-mordmysterium. Beläget på den östra änden av Duluth.
Miljontals år av geologisk och glacial skulptering av basalt har gått till skapandet av dessa mycket tilltalande fall. Denna delstatspark är ett mycket populärt stopp, speciellt eftersom vi får fyra vattenfall på ett och samma ställe.
Ojibwe kallar Grand Portage "The Great Carrying Place" eftersom det markerar början på en 8,5 mil lång portage - portage innebär att bära din kanot och alla dina grejer över land - mellan Lake Superior och Pigeon River. Idag kan du själv kliva in på denna urgamla handelsväg. I början av denna historiska stig finns också Grand Portage National Monument, med rekonstruerade byggnader av handelsfortet och representationer av Ojibwe Village. Monumentet och Heritage Centre är väl värda ett besök.
Det här är en plats som handlar mycket mer om sammanhanget för vad den representerar än själva kajen. Om du gillar att hemsökas av historien är Hovland Dock ett bra ställe att stå still och föreställa sig alla liv som har passerat detta område. Idag är dockan allt som återstår av den en gång så blomstrande fiskebyn och den är intressant för... ja, dess förfallna tillstånd!
Många statliga parker och vägkanter på North Shore Scenic Drive har ett vattenfall för besökarna att njuta av, och vattenfallsjagare kommer att hitta många läckerheter. Den bästa tiden på året att njuta av vattenfall på North Shore är april när snön vanligtvis smälter och skickar vatten som kraschar genom floderna som matar in i Lake Superior. Bara ett bra exempel är Devil's Kettle Falls, som ligger i Judge C.R. Magney State Park. Ett dubbelt vattenfall bildas där Brule-floden delar sig i två fall åtskilda av en utsprång av hård, vulkanisk ryolitsten. På ena sidan faller floden i en vattenpöl och fortsätter sin resa till Lake Superior. Men vart tar den andra sidan vägen?
Populärt bland pilgrimsfalkar, bergsklättrare och turister precis som vi, detta geologiska landmärke nära Silver Bay är en av de bästa utsiktspunkterna längs hela North Shore. Palisade Head svävar 350 fot över vattnet och är en massiv klippformation - det är i stort sett en ren klippa, och från dess kant är utsikten vidsträckt. Det är en syn man inte får missa. Här är den bästa delen - ingen större vandring krävs. Parkeringen är högst upp!
Utan tvekan är Split Rock Lighthouse en av de mest ikoniska fotografierna att ta på din turné. En ökända storm 1905 förstörde nästan 29 fartyg, vilket ledde till byggandet av detta navigationshjälpmedel 20 miles norr om Two Harbors. Inte bara var det målmedvetet – inramningen är majestätisk. The tour was convenient, able to be started and stopped as we wished, advance notice given when park pass would need to be purchased and option to skip that part. Tour also worked in both directions (going north along the route and coming back south on same route).

My sister and I stayed for 4 days in a cute little B&B in Two Harbors. There is a beach/ boat launch 5 blocks from our house. We visited Gooseberry Falls which was only a few miles away. There is a lot of steps if you choose to go off the main path. The trees still had color which was beautiful, there was many people as the weather was perfect. We also visited Split Rock Lighthouse. If you are just going to the lighthouse you don’t need a park sticker. You have to pay $8 each to go to the lighthouse. There was also a small museum where you could read about the area and see an actual glass prism that is used in the lighthouse. The guide had much information on the lighthouse and the water area. He had many stories. The lighthouse was being restored so we couldn’t go inside. We also went to Iona’s Beach. Lake Superior is very clean, you can see all the rock in the water. Loved it Highway 61 is a beautiful drive, you can see the lake on most of it. There is also 2 short tunnels you drive through.

The guides suggested stops and information about state parks gave us many options along our route. The detailed stories of lives along the lake and surrounding area gave us a personalized view rather than just looking at our gps. We will do it again next road trip.
