Denna tur börjar på parkeringsplatsen i Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center, som ligger på 600 Canal Park Drive, Duluth. För att börja turen, lämna parkeringsplatsen och sväng höger in på Canal Park Drive. Notera: Turen är över 48 miles lång, med mer än 47 ljudberättelser, och tar ca 2 - 3 timmar att slutföra. Lokal legend säger att 1870 tog varje man, kvinna och barn i Duluth fram sina spadar och grävde kanalen här på bara tre dagar! I verkligheten gjorde ett enormt ångmudderverk det mesta av det hårda arbetet. Inte lika kul, jag vet!
Gruvmagnaten Chester Congdon byggde den 1908. Den övergick senare till hans dotter Elisabeth, som levde under sina skymningsår där. Det vill säga fram till den 27 juni 1977, då hon hittades mördad i sitt sovrum. Någon hade kvävt henne med en satinkudde. I närheten fanns Elisabeths sjuksköterska, ihjälslagen med en ljusstake.
När vi beger oss till utkanten av Duluth, kanske du undrar var staden fick sitt namn. Tja, för det måste vi träffa den franske upptäcktsresanden Daneil Greysolon Dulhut. Han slog läger i detta område 1679 och planterade stolt det franska vapenskölden.
Denna utsikt har också en serie paneler som belyser historien om kommersiellt fiske på sjön. Det är big business! Fiskreservatet tvärs över gatan är inte öppet för allmänheten, men det gör affärer med att fånga regnbåge, uppfostra deras avkommor och sedan återföra dem till sjön. Det är en cykel som pågår varje år och hjälper till att upprätthålla våra marina ekosystem.
För att se markören, parkera i växeln framför. Annars fortsätter näringsämnen från jorden. Och precis som träden har vilda blommor sina egna intrikata rotsystem. Deras rötter hjälper till att stabilisera jorden. De använder sedan dessa näringsämnen för sin egen tillväxt och återför sedan näringen till jorden när de sönderfaller.
Detta var den förslappade delen av staden där män kunde "befrias från sin lön". På sin höjdpunkt i slutet av 1800-talet fanns det 22 salonger inom bara två kvarters radie! Det är säkert många ställen för dessa män att pyssla om och dela vilda berättelser.
Tack och lov slutförde arbetare det treåriga projektet utan incidenter. När tunneln var klar behövde förarna inte längre gå mil ur vägen och körde på en smal tvåfilig väg som gick precis längs klippkanten. Snacka om ett vitt knockande driv! Ett misstag och bilen skulle ha störtat rakt i sjön.
En klar morgon i juni 1928 befälhavde kapten Edward Smith SS America, ett passagerarångfartyg med 47 ombord. Passagerarna inkluderade ett antal rika medborgare på väg till sina sommarsemesterhus på Isle Royale.
Namnet kommer faktiskt från Objiwe-namnet för denna plats. De kallar det Shabonimikani-zibi, eller krusbärens flodplats. Och de har en väldigt speciell koppling till dessa små syrliga bär.
När denna del av jorden förändrades, spydde vulkanutbrott ut lava på ytan. Lavan fylldes i sprickor och sprickor och hårdnade sedan till stenar som kallas magmatiska stenar. Den typ av stenar som finns på Iona's Beach är specifika typer som kallas rhyolit och felsite.
Strax framför är en perfekt plats att ta ett foto av Split Rock Lighthouse. Faktum är att miljontals människor har tagit ett foto från just denna plats, vilket gör detta till en av de mest fotograferade fyrarna i världen!

The narration was informative and educational. At times, the narration skipped towards the end of a segment, but you are able to understand the end. This tour is helpful if you do not have background on the North Shore/Duluth. I would recommend it.

We camp a lot with our fur babies and often times have to miss out on exploring the nearby area. This was a great option for us. With the exception of the Mansion and last light house, the dogs were able to enjoy the day with us at all the stops. If you have dogs but still want to see the lighthouse at the end, you can go to the state park and walk the trail towards the lighthouse for amazing pictures. Very happy to have found this little gem and will continue to look for other guided tours like this in other areas.

We’ve lived in Duluth for 20 years and we still found this trip great fun. We learned so much about the North shore that we didn’t know. I will admit that it seems like it’s a little overpriced, but after doing it we found it well worth the price. Highly recommend.

I was quite surprised. I expected this to be a struggle for my children (8 yrs old) to be interested. They enjoyed it from the start. I would encourage the stops as there is deeper learning and great sites to see. I had driven by many times in my life, but there was so much I didn't know. I would recommend it.

This was awful. The tour we choose did not exist but they sure took our money. We are in line to get it back but the lake superior north shore audio driving tour is not supported, their phone number goes to a disconnected line and you have to fight to get your money back.

The North Shoreline is beautiful. We enjoyed the stories on the tour, and we liked being alerted about available restrooms and approaching turnoffs. We did, however, expect the audio tour to last all the way to Grand Portage. We likely wouldn’t have gone that far, but we were surprised when it ended at the lighthouse. Don’t miss Iona Beach. Be sure to take the trail all the way back. It’s beautiful and relaxing.
