O Canal Otaru é um clássico quando se trata de pontos turísticos famosos de Hokkaido. Outrora o centro de distribuição de Hokkaido, tinha uma população que ultrapassava a de Sapporo. Naquela época, o canal era usado para descarregar navios por meio de barcaças e foi estabelecido para aumentar a distância que as mercadorias podiam ser distribuídas. Eventualmente, o canal não era mais necessário para cumprir sua função, uma vez que as docas foram estabelecidas e deveriam ser aterradas. No entanto, atualmente é um lugar para os cidadãos e turistas relaxarem e se divertirem com seus passeios e lâmpadas a gás iluminando as margens do rio.
Os edifícios históricos da cidade de Otaru do início do século 20 são agora usados como vários recursos para o turismo. A Otaru Art Base, localizada em frente ao Canal Otaru, na Rinkosen Street, é uma dessas instalações. Existem quatro edifícios históricos onde 20 dos maiores bancos de Hokkaido foram reunidos, anteriormente o centro da economia de Hokkaido conhecido como "North Wall Street". O que era a antiga filial do Hokkaido Takushoku Bank Otaru, conforme visto na foto, agora abriga o Museu de Arte de Nitori e inclui exposições como pinturas japonesas e estrangeiras, esculturas em madeira e muito mais. No porão você encontrará a Art Nouveau Art Déco Glass Gallery.
Se você está viajando a lazer, então você vai querer desfrutar de comida gourmet e compras. Ambos podem ser feitos na Rua Comercial Sakaimachi Dori de Otaru, localizada na parte interior da Rua Rinkosen, paralela ao Canal Otaru. É uma rua de mão única que se estende por cerca de 900 metros de North Wall Street até o Marchen Crossroads, onde você encontrará a Agência Otaru do Banco do Japão. Ambos os lados da rua estão repletos de antigas lojas de mercadores e edifícios de estilo ocidental. Perto do Canal Otaru, é outro ponto turístico muito popular.
Otaru pode ser conhecido por sua influência nostálgica de edifícios históricos ocidentais e artesanato em vidro, mas também há um local que transmite a história do Japão de muito tempo atrás. Um desses lugares é a Cervejaria de Saquê Tanaka, fundada em 1899. Muitos tipos de bebidas alcoólicas são fabricados aqui, incluindo vinho de ameixa, saquê doce e, claro, o amado saquê local de Otaru, Takaragawa. Como o clima frio de Otaru permite a fabricação de saquê o ano todo, a Tanaka Sake Brewery Kikkougura é um ótimo lugar para visitar em qualquer época do ano.
Qualquer pessoa pode desfrutar de um passeio pelas várias belas paisagens da histórica Otaru. Com vista para esta bela cidade litorânea e o Mar do Japão está o Monte. Tengu, cerca de 15 minutos de carro do IC Otaru. O Monte. O teleférico Tengu pode levá-lo do sopé da montanha ao topo, numa distância total de 735 metros, em cerca de 4 minutos. Do topo da montanha você pode até ter uma bela vista da Península de Shakotan.

This was our first day in Japan and our guide was wonderful! She had beautiful English and had a lot of little tidbits of knowledge about Otaru and navigating around Japan in general. She was a delight! We saw so much and learned a little as well. It was a wonderful day.

Our guide, Fumiko Yoshizawa was delightful. It was a particularly cold day and she brought us hand warmers which was so very thoughtful. Clearly Fumiko loves her city and loves sharing it with visitors. She contacted us several times before the tour to ensure when and where to meet her. She took us to a local restaurant that we would not have found on our own and guided us to try dishes we probably would not have tried without her encouragement. The food was delicious. She took us to several places and gave us rest periods as needed. She is a great tour guide.

Michiko is very knowledgeable and a delight. She was very kind and was able to take my weird eating habits in stride and find a lovely dining spot. Bad tour. Waste of money. I could not understand the guide. His English was terrible. Really nothing to see, except shops to spend money on stuff I don’t want or need.

It was disappointing to learn that the museum we had originally planned to close was closed, but he quickly suggested the Otaru General Museum. There, we learned about the history of Otaru while listening to the guide. We met our guide, Mr. Yakuwa, for the first time in the lobby of the hotel where we were going to stay, and he was a dandy man about the same age as us, so we were able to ask him to guide us with peace of mind. At a sushi restaurant that Mr. Hakkuwa had booked in advance for lunch, we had a good meal. After that, the half day was full of shopping in Sakaimachi street, exploring the canal, and enjoying delicious sweets as a break. Thank you very much. As a side note, our dinner was undecided, but the beer restaurant that our guide told us about just before we parted was great in terms of atmosphere and taste.
