Santorini is the most dramatic of all the Greek islands. Whitewashed villages cling to the rim of a flooded volcanic caldera, their blue-domed churches looking out over a vast sweep of sea. Famous for its sunsets, black-sand beaches and volcanic wines, it is a place that lives up to every photograph.
Top Things to Do in Santorini
Watch the world-famous sunset in Oia, then explore the village's marble lanes and clifftop galleries. A caldera cruise — often by traditional sailing boat — takes you to the volcanic hot springs and the best swimming spots, finishing with the sunset from the water.
Taste the island's distinctive Assyrtiko wines at a cliffside winery, relax on the volcanic black and red beaches, and step back in time at the remarkable Bronze Age site of Akrotiri, often called the "Greek Pompeii".

Best Time to Visit
May–June and September–October offer warm weather, swimmable seas and fewer crowds than the July–August peak, when prices and visitor numbers soar. Sunsets are spectacular year-round, but spring and early autumn are the most comfortable and best value.
Getting Around
The island is small but hilly. Local buses connect the main towns to Fira, the capital, though they can be crowded in summer. Many visitors hire an ATV, car or driver for flexibility; the caldera-edge villages of Fira and Oia are best explored on foot.
