Exterieur bezoek aan een van de culturele iconen van Ierland en Waterford City in het House of Waterford Crystal. Reginald’s Tower is het monumentale monument van Waterford en het oudste openbare gebouw van Ierland. Het wordt al meer dan 800 jaar continu gebruikt. De eerste toren op de site werd na 914 door Vikingen gebouwd en vormde de top van de driehoekige nederzetting, een gebied dat tot op heden bekend staat als de Vikingdriehoek. Herbouwd door de Anglo-Noormannen in de 12e eeuw, de bovenste twee verdiepingen werden toegevoegd in de 15e eeuw. Tot ongeveer 1700 was de toren het steunpunt van de middeleeuwse verdedigingsmuren die de stad omsloten. Ga verder naar het gigantische ‘Dragonslayer’ Vikingzwaard. 'S Werelds langste houten zwaardsculptuur staat nu op zijn plaats in zijn nieuwe huis in het hart van de Vikingdriehoek in Waterford City.
Bezoek deze prachtige kerk in de buurt van de Vikingdriehoek met een prachtig blauw colonnades-interieur dat leidt naar een prachtig altaar met een buitengewoon interessante collectie religieuze kunst en iconografie. Dit architectonische hoogtepunt dat je gezien moet hebben, dateert uit 1793.
Ga zitten op de stoelen die een van de belangrijkste historische gebeurtenissen in Ierland herdenken. Dit paar bronzen sculpturen viert het huwelijk van Strongbow met Aoife MacMurrough. De gearrangeerde bruiloft vond plaats in 1170. Strongbow was een Normandische veroveraar van Waterford en andere delen van Ierland en zij was een Ierse prinses, de dochter van koning Dermot MacMurrough. Bezoek de plek waar de Vikingen hun eerste kerk bouwden in 914. De kerk gewijd aan de Heilige Drie-eenheid werd gebouwd op de plaats van de Christ Church Cathedral in 1050 door Reginald, zoon van Sigtryg (Sitric), die ook zijn naam gaf aan Reginald's Tower op de kades. Deze historische locatie is een van de belangrijkste in Ierland en is een must als je Waterford bezoekt.
Bezoek dit aangrijpende monument ter ere van John Cordon uit Waterford, het jongste geregistreerde slachtoffer aan geallieerde zijde in de Eerste Wereldoorlog, die stierf in Vlaanderen op de leeftijd van slechts 14 jaar.
Bezoek het havengebied om de 19e-eeuwse klokkentoren te bezoeken, gemaakt in neogotische stijl, voltooid in 1863. Dit architectonisch interessante bouwwerk aan de kade van Waterford City heeft ingewikkelde ontwerpkenmerken. Oorspronkelijk had de klokkentoren drinkbakken om uit te drinken. Deze intrigerende stop zal de unieke mechanismen van de klok uitleggen en over het belang van de haven van Waterford van de 10e eeuw tot heden, haar rol als vertrekhaven tijdens de grote hongersnood naar de Nieuwe Wereld.

Was advised a couple of days before this that the date I had selected was now cancelled ( No explanations given) and could I change the day. Unable to do this due to other plans. Message to my phone was from a Switzerland phone number and was told to contact Viator re refund and to give person my details. Did not do this as I did not book with Viator. Was also advised to cancel booking. I did not cancel so should have been done from Tripadvisor end. Awaiting refund.

My wife and I joined Bernadette’s tour hoping for general knowledge on the city, and what we got was a knowledgeable and impassioned local guide who sparked inside of us a want to see a city continue to reinvest in itself through its fascinating histories and museums. We ended up staying a bit longer and supporting local artisans because of Bernadette’s excellent direction and great love for her city. She also clearly knows people as we were able get inside scoops on certain things that only a well-esteemed local could. Highly recommend!

Derek was our tour guide. His knowledge of the history of Ireland and in particular, Waterford, was amazing. When he showed us the various historical buildings, streets, memorials, etc. he gave us an historical context that explained the importance to local, national and even world events.
