Waterford werd gesticht door Vikingen. Ze kozen deze rivier met een reden, en als je eenmaal op het water bent zie je precies waarom. Vaar langs Reginald's Tower, het oudste burgerlijk gebouw in Ierland, langs de scheepswerf van Malcolmson, door Canada Street waar emigranten ooit aan boord gingen naar Newfoundland, en naar Waterford Castle voordat je weer door het estuarium keert. Reginald's Tower, meer dan duizend jaar geleden gebouwd door de Vikingen, is het oudste openbare gebouw van Ierland. De toren staat op de top van de Vikingdriehoek van Waterford en komt voor in vele historische afleveringen, van Strongbow tot Cromwell, Perkin Warbeck, King James II en nog veel meer.
Van de 6e tot de 8e eeuw na Christus bestond er een monastieke nederzetting op Little Island. Een gravure van een monnikshoofd uit deze periode siert de ingang van het kasteel tot op de dag van vandaag. De Vikingen arriveerden in de 9e eeuw en er werden twee vestingwerken gebouwd op het eiland Vryk, 'Dane's Island'. De Noormannen vielen vervolgens binnen in 1170 en Maurice Fitzgerald, de neef van Stongbow, werd tijdens de verovering door de Ossermen gevangen gehouden op Little Island. Hij werd in de nasleep naar behoren beloond met veel land en zo zou het eiland acht eeuwen lang de thuisbasis worden van de graven van Kildare.

It was such fun! I'm pretty good with the history in Ireland and the vikings etc but my family and I learned so much on this tour. The guide and the captain (Mary & Andy) were exceptionally friendly and knowledgeable. There was complimentary tea, coffee, water, juice and snacks offered. There was also binoculars available to use and viking hats for photo opportunities! I'll definitely be booking again next time I'm in Waterford. I'd highly recommend it to anyone!!

Andy and Mary were very welcoming hosts. Andy was the captain and Mary explained everything. In saying that, so did Andy. It was a beautiful day and we had a great time. My wife and I were the only 2 on the boat because a group of 4 cancelled. They brought us out anyway. I'd recommend it to everyone

A beautiful scenic boat ride. A little light on the Viking history side, however, rich with Irish culture and history. John the narrator was fun and friendly. He walked us over to O’Sullivans and introduced us to the owner. Live entertainment was really pleasant. ML

Very interesting tour along Waterford Quay. Short one hour fifteen minute tour for small groups. Our tour only had our party if four so it felt like a private tour. Johnnie was our guide and he provided us with a wealth of information regarding the people, places, wildlife etc relative to the area. The tea, coffee and refreshments provided by Captain Andy were a very welcome surprise. Around great experience.
