Welkom bij Vestmannaeyjar, ook wel bekend als de Westman-eilanden: de keuze van de New York Times voor een van de beste reisbestemmingen van 2024! Maak je klaar voor een dag vol ruige schoonheid, natuurwonderen en onvergetelijke ervaringen. We verkennen het beste van Heimaey, van de iconische Elephant Rock tot het spotten van papegaaiduikers bij de Stórhöfði-kaap. Duik in de lokale geschiedenis in het Eldheimar Museum, beklim de berg Eldfell voor epische uitzichten en keer terug naar huis met herinneringen die een leven lang meegaan! Je zult genieten van deze dagtocht vanuit het comfort van een minibus met 19 zitplaatsen, gegarandeerd een kleine groep.

Maak je klaar voor een fantastische reis naar Vestmannaeyjar, de grillige Westman-eilanden! Vertrek vanuit Reykjavík en stap aan boord van onze gezellige 19-persoons minibus met onze levendige gids. Na een rit van twee uur bereiken we Landeyjarhöfn voor een snelle veerboot naar Heimaey, allemaal in slechts 30 minuten. Maak je klaar voor een dag vol gelach en eilandlekkernijen!
Zodra we aankomen, maak je klaar om versteld te staan van de adembenemende Olifantenrots (Halldórsskora)! Het is tijdens de vulkaanuitbarsting van Eldfell uit basaltrots gehouwen en is een lust voor het oog. Met zijn unieke silhouet dat lijkt op een olifant die zijn slurf in het water dompelt, lijkt het net de eigen beeldentuin van de natuur.
Bereid je vervolgens op ons avontuur voor op een betoverende sessie papegaaiduikers kijken bij de Stórhöfði-kaap! Houd uw camera's gereed, want er zijn volop mogelijkheden om prachtige foto's te maken van deze charismatische vogels terwijl ze hun dagelijkse capriolen uitvoeren. Papegaaiduikers zijn met hun komische waggelen en levendige snavels de echte VIP's (Very Belangrijke Papegaaiduikers) van de Westman-eilanden. Bijgenaamd "zeepapegaaien" of soms "clowns van de zee", brengen papegaaiduikers 8 maanden door op zee op zoek naar vis in de winter, en keren ze van half april tot augustus alleen terug naar het land om te paren en te nestelen.
Na ons avontuur om papegaaiduikers te spotten is onze volgende stop het Eldheimar Museum, ook wel bekend als het 'Pompeii van het Noorden', waar je de gebeurtenissen van de vulkaanuitbarsting van 1973 en de blijvende impact ervan op de regio kunt verkennen. Na dit verhelderende bezoek gaan we naar het centrum voor een lunchpauze (lunchkosten zijn niet inbegrepen in de tourprijs).
Na de lunch gaat ons avontuur verder naar Skansinn, gelegen aan de haven en vernoemd naar een historisch fort dat ooit deze ruimte bewoonde. Hier ontdek je Stafkirkjan, een opmerkelijke Noorse 'Viking'-houten kerk, geschilderd in opvallende zwarte tinten. Bovendien mag u de adembenemende vergezichten van de kliffen die de haven van Heimaey bewaken niet missen, die een schilderachtige achtergrond vormen voor uw eilandverkenning.
Vervolgens beginnen we aan een opwindende wandeling naar de Eldfell-vulkaan, bekend om zijn dramatische uitbarsting in 1973. Zodra we de top hebben veroverd, bereid je voor om verblind te worden door het adembenemende panorama dat zich voor je ontvouwt - een betoverend uitzicht op uitgestrekte lavavelden , het charmante stadje en het hele eiland liggen als een lappendeken beneden verspreid. Na de wandeling heb je de vrijheid om op je gemak de stad te verkennen of te kiezen voor een boeiende wandeling door de fascinerende lavavelden op de terugweg naar de haven. De keuze is aan jou!
In de late namiddag hergroeperen we ons in de haven om aan boord van de veerboot terug naar het vasteland te springen, zodat we tegen de avond een stipte terugkeer naar Reykjavik garanderen. Het is de perfecte afsluiting van een dag vol onvergetelijke avonturen op de betoverende Westmaneilanden!

Houd er rekening mee dat we alleen de ophaallocaties bedienen die in onze onderstaande ophaallijst zijn vermeld. Vanwege verkeersbeperkingen mogen we niet ophalen bij hotels in het centrum van de stad, noch bij particuliere Air BnB's. Als uw ophaallocatie niet op onze ophaallijst staat, vragen wij u vriendelijk om het dichtstbijzijnde ophaalpunt bij uw accommodatie te vinden uit onze lijst. BSÍ busstation – Vatnsmýrarvegi 10. Bus ophalen/afzetten nr. 6 – Safnahúsið (Het Cultuurhuis) Bus ophalen/afzetten nr.9 – Snorrabraut N1 tankstation Selfoss Landeyjahöfn, Landeyjahafnarvegur, 861, (Herjólfur veerboot) Ophaaltijd is afhankelijk van seizoen en locatie, controleer altijd uw ticket voor verdere details. LET OP: Zorg ervoor dat u klaarstaat op uw ophaallocatie op het exacte tijdstip van aanvang van uw ticket. Het kan tot 30 minuten duren voordat uw gids u ophaalt, afhankelijk van uw locatie en verkeersomstandigheden. AFZETTEN: U wordt afgezet om ongeveer 20:00 (20.00 uur) vanaf uw oorspronkelijke ophaallocatie. Tijden kunnen veranderen afhankelijk van het weer en de wegomstandigheden.

Franklin was our guide and he really made this our favorite tour. Westmann Island is enchanting. We got to see several puffins, had an excellent lunch at Tanginn, visited the beluga whale sanctuary and climbed the dormant volcano Eldfell. Great tour!!
I took the Westman Islands Tour with "Your Day Tours" in July 2025. We had Rebecca as our guide/driver. There were 19 people on our tour. I had a little confusion on the pickup time. My paperwork said pickup was from 8-8:45am, but the driver said pickup starts at 8:45am. So I waited at my bus stop for over an hour. I was picked up at 8:55am. Rebecca was a very fun, energetic and funny guide. You could tell she loved her job and loved showing us what Iceland had to offer on this tour. She was also very informative on what we were seeing on the tour. The big draw for me on this tour was the puffins. I will say the walk/hike to see them was somewhat difficult with the narrow trails zig zagging around puffin nests. I am glad I brought my trekking pole. As a suggestion, the company should note this on "things to bring". The hillside was very steep. Older folks with balance issues, would not be able to do it. Luckily, we had magnificent weather, to make everything easier. If that hillside would have been wet, it would have been extremely difficult to walk. It was a little confusing on where to get the best views of the puffins. At some point, people started to split off and go further down, but I stayed where we first saw some puffins. We also went to the Beluga Whale Museum (admission was not included in tour price). We saw Eldheimer which is the volcanic eruption museum from 1973. That was very interesting. We also hike around the volcanic crater rim of Mt Edfell. We saw Skansinn which is a church gifted to Iceland from Norway. The ferry ride to and from the island was smooth and faster than I expected. It was only about 35-40 minutes each way. The only thing we didn't have time to see was the Elephant Rock. It was mostly because we voted to stay a bit longer at the puffins. Great tour and I'd highly recommend getting to the island.
We had Franklin as our guide and he was wonderful! Funny, informative, and knowledgeable. His love and excitement about all animals was a very endearing quality. He made our day fun and relaxing. This was a great tour, it is a long day but it went fast. We saw a lot-the puffins and Eldheimer Museum were highlights! Would recommend this tour and this company to anyone visiting Iceland.
Great trip! Excellent puffin viewing. We were able to get close enough for spectacular pictures. The volcano hike and museum were also great! Very fun day!
Our guide Franklin is great. He is entertaining and also punctual. We saw the Beluga whales in the Sealife sanctuary but the cost is extra if you want to see it. There were many puffins but less than I expected since they went out to the sea.
Although it rained (typical Icelandic weather) the tour was fantastic. We saw some incredible sights with a couple of cheeky added bits. Our guide Anastasia was brilliant. Interacting with all of us and parting her extensive knowledge of Iceland onto us. Absolutely would take a tour with her again.
