Dit is niet zomaar een pintxo crawl—het is de ultieme Baskische eetervaring met zeven (gelukkige ;) stops! Van iconische bars tot verborgen pareltjes, we duiken in de smaken, geschiedenis en cultuur die San Sebastián tot een van 's werelds beste foodiebestemmingen maken. Onderweg ontmoeten we de mensen achter het eten en proeven we van alles, van kazen tot pintxos, gebak tot wijnen en van cider tot likeuren, en ontdekken we waarom de Baskische keuken veel verder gaat dan pintxos. Ons avontuur begint met een korte stop bij een geliefde buurtkaasboetiek. De schappen zijn bekleed met meer dan 50 ambachtelijke variëteiten, elk met zorg vervaardigd en met een eigen verhaal. We kiezen een speciaal samengestelde selectie om later van te genieten – sommige smaken zijn het waard om op te bouwen.
Onze volgende stop brengt ons naar een eigentijdse bar die wordt gevierd om zijn jonge en inventieve culinaire team. Hier openen we eindelijk die kaasproefdoos, gecombineerd met een verfrissend glas natuurwijn. Daarna volgt een van San Sebastiáns kenmerkende pintxos – levendig, expressief en onmiskenbaar Baskisch, waarbij traditionele wortels worden gecombineerd met moderne creativiteit.
Op een van de legendarische pintxo-plekken van de stad krijgen tijdloze Baskische nietjes een frisse kijk. Vertrouwde ingrediënten worden getransformeerd door Expert techniek en fantasierijke wendingen. Net buiten fluisteren de smalle straatjes van de oude binnenstad verhalen over gastronomische voortrekkers en generaties chefs die deze culinaire hoofdstad vorm hebben gegeven.
Verborgen in een historische wijnwinkel van meer dan een eeuw oud, pauzeren we om te nippen van Patxaran, de gekoesterde regionale likeur doordrenkt met sleebessen. Soepel, zacht zoet en diep gebonden aan de Baskische identiteit – vooral wanneer gecombineerd met een delicate lokale zoetigheid. Het is een rustig, betekenisvol moment doordrenkt van traditie.
Deze halte viert de essentie van de Baskische smaak en brengt het beste van de oceaan en het platteland samen op één bord. Het maakt deel uit van een award winnend culinair project waar modern pintxo vakmanschap samengaat met aloude lokale ingrediënten. Verwacht fantasierijke creaties geworteld in traditie : innovatief, expressief en onmiskenbaar Baskisch.
Vervolgens stappen we een klein, door vrouwen geleid etablissement binnen dat warmte uitstraalt. Bekend om zijn marktgedreven keuken en vriendelijke sfeer, is het het soort verborgen plek dat alleen de lokale bevolking typisch kent. Eenmaal binnen maakt de charme het moeilijk om afscheid te nemen – een authentieke glimp van de dagelijkse Baskische gastvrijheid.
Onze reis eindigt bij een historische banketbakkerij in de oude stad, bekend om zijn pantxineta : een klassiek Baskisch dessert van knapperig bladerdeeg en romige vla. Vers uit de oven en onmogelijk toegeeflijk, het biedt een heerlijk lokale finale van onze pintxo ervaring.

We sampled Basque cheese, wines, pintxos and desserts over 3 hours with our excellent guide Malena. Walked all over San Sebastián to 6 food places while Malena pointed out several other details about the city and Basque culture. We enjoyed a variety of seafood, egg, pork, beef and vegetarian pintxos, along with local wines, vermouth and cider. Malena was very mindful of our vegetarian/pescatarian friends’ food restrictions as well as our preferences of the type of pintxos. Overall a great experience.

San Sebastián did not disappoint. It’s a beautiful city, very walkable and the food options are outstanding. The Pinxtos are out of this world and there are so many options to try. Beef cheek, Pork ribs, Seafood and vegetarian dishes. The beach’s are immaculate and you can hire surf gear at reasonable rates. It’s worth taking the open top bus tour which you can hop on and off. And the Funicular destination is a must, the view from the top of the mountain is breathtaking. The city is also excellent value for money and the people are always friendly. We will definitely visit again.
We enjoyed every bit of this tour, and our host was knowledgeable and did everything in our power to make it so enjoyable. The highlight was the pulled pork sandwich!
Thoroughly recommend this tour. Martin was an excellent guide with great knowledge of the local food and culture. Doing it on our first night was perfect. It gave us confidence navigating pintxos bars, plus we got to try other regional specialities we wouldn’t have found on our own. A great mix of food, insight, and orientation - the ideal start to a visit in San Sebastián.
We completely agree that doing a food tour on the first evening in San Sebastián is one of the best ways to start a trip :) Once you understand the rhythm of the pintxos bars and the local food culture, the whole city opens up in a different way. Our guide Mattin was wonderful, friendly, close and very knowledgeable. He took us to places outside the tourist circuit, places that if you don't know them as local, you wouldn't discover. The best thing was that we tried pintxos made at the moment, none of the typical bar full of pintxos that look with the naked eye
I found it an exceptional tour. Both for the selection of venues visited and for the professionalism of Mattin and Lucia. I recommend it for all those who want to discover new places, beyond the classic pintxos tour done in the city.

Ernes was amazing! We tried many different pintxos and wines and had impromptu stops along the tour..We also learned all about San Sebastián and the Basque culture… A great way to spend 3 hours.. highly recommend!
From the moment the tour began, it was clear that this was not just about food but an immersive experience into the Basque culture, guided by experts with a true passion for their city's gastronomy. The selection of pintxos and wine pairings was exceptional. The guides were truly knowledgeable, not just about the food/wine but also about San Sebastian's history and culinary traditions. Perhaps the most exciting part was the discovery of hidden gems-places we might have walked past without a second glance. These places delivered some of the most amazing pintxos we had eaten. Overall, this tour is a MUST for food lovers! It strikes the perfect balance between a little history and indulgence, offering a deeper appreciation of Basque cuisine while treating us all to an unforgettable evening. Oh wait...did I forget to mention the final stop...a chocolate stop. Not just any chocolate...the best! This tour is highly recommended.
