Ga op een boeiende reis door Santa Fe met deze zelfstandige wandeltocht. Begin bij de historische San Miguel Chapel, de oudste kerk van de VS, en wandel vervolgens naar de betoverende Loretto Chapel, bekend om zijn wonderbaarlijke wenteltrap. Het verleden komt tot leven in de Santa Fe Plaza en bij het stijgende Kruis van de Martelaren, met een ongeëvenaard uitzicht op Santa Fe. Terwijl u door de oude Spaanse straten van de stad kronkelt, herbeleeft u de dramatische gebeurtenissen van de Pueblo-opstand die deze unieke hoofdstad voorgoed heeft veranderd. Deze tour begint buiten het gebouw van de New Mexico Capitol Art Collection op 415 Don Gaspar Ave, Santa Fe. Als je er nog niet bent, moet je er nu heen. Om te beginnen ga je zo staan dat het grote ronde Art Collection gebouw aan je linkerkant staat. Loop dan rechtdoor over het Old Santa Fe Trail. We staan midden op Santa Fe Plaza. Deze obelisk voor ons is het Soldiers’ Monument, opgericht in 1867 ter ere van de Union-soldaten uit New Mexico die hebben gevochten in de burgeroorlog. Pauzeer hier en kijk naar rechts. Hier staat de Loretto-kapel, gebouwd in 1878. Hoewel het niet zoveel geschiedenis heeft als de San Miguel-kapel, heeft het toch zijn eigen aanspraak op roem. Dat zou de zogenaamde ‘wonderbaarlijke trap’ zijn.
Pauzeer hier. Rechts van ons staat de machtige kathedraalbasiliek van Sint Franciscus van Assisi, gebouwd in 1869. Het staat op de plaats van een veel oudere kerk die missionarissen in 1610 bouwden. Die brandde in 1680 af, maar zou tot op de dag van vandaag bewaard kunnen zijn gebleven. zonder een noodlottige beslissing in 1675.
Santa Fe is lange tijd een cruciale bestemming geweest langs vele routes door het Amerikaanse westen. Dat omvat de Old Spanish Trail die Santa Fe verbindt met de kust van Californië en El Camino Real, die zich helemaal uitstrekt vanaf Mexico-Stad. En het zijn deze oude paden
Pauzeer hier en kijk naar rechts. Zie je die eenvoudige adobe kapel met een kruis erop? Dat is de San Miguel-kapel. En raad eens? Je kijkt naar de oudste kerk in de Verenigde Staten!
Pauzeer hier. Dat lemen gebouw tegenover ons is het Paleis van de Gouverneurs, sinds 1610 het administratieve centrum van Santa Fe. Van hieruit regeerden de Spanjaarden tientallen jaren over New Mexico. En het is hier waar Po'pay zijn zinnen op zet als hij zijn Pueblo-troepen de stad binnenleidt.
Kijk een stukje naar voren, aan de linkerkant van de straat. Zie je het witte bordje met de tekst ‘chocolade + kasjmier’? Dat markeert een stijlvolle kleine boetiek die precies verkoopt wat er in de naam staat... maar het adres zelf heeft een veel verrassendere geschiedenis.
Na de mislukte heroveringspoging van Otermín gaat er een decennium voorbij in relatieve vrede. Dat wil zeggen, totdat Diego de Vargas op het toneel verschijnt. In 1692 marcheert Vargas naar Santa Fe met slechts een paar honderd man en een handvol kanonnen. Maar hij is er niet om te vechten. Hij biedt de Puebloans een deal aan: als ze Spanje toestaan de controle over New Mexico te heroveren, zullen ze allemaal clementie krijgen en niet worden gestraft voor hun opstand. Na veel discussie zijn de leiders van Pueblo het daarmee eens.
Blijf langs het pad lopen. Vergeet niet om uw tempo te bepalen als dat nodig is. We bevinden ons momenteel ruim 2.000 meter boven zeeniveau. Dat betekent dat de zuurstof hierboven een stuk dunner is dan je misschien gewend bent! Dus als je buiten adem raakt, is het prima om een pauze te nemen!
Iets verderop staat het Kruis van de Martelaren, het meest iconische kenmerk van dit park. Dit kruis eert de 21 Franciscaanse missionarissen en 380 kolonisten die zijn omgekomen tijdens de Pueblo-opstand van 1680.

Id rather pay more and go with a live tour. Navigating through maps is difficult
Can you confirm that you hit “allow” for location permissions? That’s a necessary function for the tour and without it, the app won’t sync with your location as you mentioned. Since you weren’t really able to take this tour, I’d be happy to exchange it for you.

Loved this walking tour. Once you figure out where it starts it guides you step by step to your next stop. The navigation worked perfectly with the narration starting as you approached each location. The history only covered a specific time period that was applicable to what you were seeing but the story was told chronologically so you could fully understand what had happened and imagine what it must have felt like. We walked on Easter Sunday so there were no crowds although I can't imagine it would matter anyway since you listen to your own headphones. Highly recommend as a way to get a snapshot of what Old Town Santa Fe is all about.

This was exactly what I was looking for my first walk through Santa Fe! Read, download and follow instructions for everything sent before you go and it’s a breeze! The narrator is informative and speaks in a voice that is pleasant to hear. Stop and go at will but be sure to keep track of your stop numbers in case a narrative gets missed. Highly recommended!
