Khor Virap is het beroemdste bedevaartsoord in Armenië, omdat het direct verband houdt met de adoptie van het christendom. Als staatsgodsdienst werd het christendom in Armenië in 301 aangenomen als gevolg van inspanningen van de heilige Gregorius de Verluchter, die, voordat hij koning Trdat de 3e tot het christendom bekeerde, gevangen zat in de kerker, waarover in de 17e eeuw een kerk van het Khor Virap-klooster werd gebouwd. Vanuit het klooster kan men het prachtige uitzicht op de Bijbelse berg Ararat bewonderen.
Verspreid tussen de bergen, Azat Reservoir brengt water en lucht samen, het creëren van een van de meest indrukwekkende en rustige uitzichten van Armenië.
De Garni tempel, die boven een driehoekige kaap uittorent, is het unieke voorbeeld van de heidense cultuur in Armenië. Het is een mix van Grieks-Romeinse en Armeense stijlen. Koning Trdat De Eerste gaf in de eerste eeuw na Christus opdracht tot de bouw van de tempel en wijdde deze aan de God van de Zon.Na de aanneming van het christendom in 301 verloor de heidense tempel zijn betekenis en werd het fort van Garni de zomerresidentie van de koningen. Tegenwoordig zijn de ruïnes van het koninklijk paleis en de badkamer met een prachtig mozaïekwerk te vinden bij de tempel.
Het Geghardklooster is het onovertroffen meesterwerk van de 13e-eeuwse Armeense architectuur. Sommige kerken van het complex zijn meesterlijk uitgehouwen in een enorme rots. Vanaf het begin heette het complex Ayrivank (grottenklooster), later werd het omgedoopt tot Geghard (lans) omdat de lans, die door de Romeinse soldaat werd gebruikt om de kant van Jezus Christus te steken, vele eeuwen in dit klooster werd bewaard. Vanwege de constructie dient Geghardavank de beste plek voor het zingen van spirituele liederen. Het complex is rijk aan subtiele sculpturale verfraaiingen en vele opvallende khachkars (kruisstenen). De site is opgenomen in de UNESCO Werelderfgoedlijst.

We had an absolutely wonderful experience on this tour! Everything was perfectly organized, and they were very punctual and fully committed to the schedule. She always made sure that everyone was comfortable, answered all our questions, and explained everything in a very interesting and clear way. Our driver, Khachik, was also excellent, professional, punctual, and drove very safely. We felt comfortable and relaxed during the entire journey. We went on an individual tour to the monasteries of Khor Virap, Noravank, Gegard and the Temple of Garni. Besides the main points of the tour, driver Arakel showed us many interesting places: the village with storks, the Azatic reservoir, beautiful views of mountain passes and Ararat. The company arranged for us to have lunch at the Noravanck monastery with a great view of the rocks. Overall, the tour went very well, if we book tours, it will only be in this campaign

I booked the private tour from Hyur’s official website - which is much cheaper than the one advertised on Tripadvisor (I suppose TA takes commission). The customer service contacted me three days prior to confirm the details and answered all kinds of my questions. The driver Arman was very professional and polite and went above and beyond to take me to bus station twice to purchase an intercity mini bus ticket. He couldn’t speak much English but whenever it’s something important he called his office to translate to me to make sure there is no misunderstanding. At each place, I got to spend as much time as I wanted and enjoyed the great views and architectures of the monasteries. Highly recommend this private tour to people who want to travel at their own pace.
