De Garni-tempel, een van de beroemdste historische en architectonische monumenten onder toeristen, bevindt zich in de provincie Kotayk. Het is het enige bewaard gebleven bouwwerk in Armenië uit de heidense periode, opgedragen aan de god Mihr. Voordat we de tempel bereiken, maken we een tussenstop op weg naar Charents Arch, vanwaar een prachtig uitzicht op de berg Ararat zich opent. Daarna bezoeken we het Geghard-klooster (Ayrivank), waar volgens de legende vanaf de 13e eeuw de speer werd bewaard waarmee Christus werd doorboord. Als onderdeel van de tour bezoeken we de kloof van de Azat-rivier, waar we de "Symphony of Stones՛" zullen zien, een wonder van de natuur. Het natuurmonument, ook wel bekend als het ՛՛Basalt Organ՛՛, staat bekend om zijn magnifieke, schijnbaar kunstmatige rotsen.

Tijdens het passeren van het dorp Voghjaberd, de architect Rafael Israelyan merkte vaak dat een prachtig uitzicht op de berg Ararat opent vanaf de nabijgelegen heuvel. En hier, in 1957, voltooide Israeliër het bouwwerk dat hij ontwierp, de Ararattempel. De laatste regel van het gedicht van Yeghishe Charents is gegraveerd in zichtbare grote letters op de vooringang. "Ga naar de wereld; er is geen witte piek zoals Ararat, zoals het pad van onrijpe glorie; ik hou van mijn Masis berg." Al snel kreeg de plaats zijn nieuwe, populaire en meer verspreide naam - De Boog van Charents. We beginnen de tour met het uitzichtpunt van de berg Ararat, het symbool van Armenië.
Het Geghard-klooster is een middeleeuws klooster in de provincie Kotayk, gedeeltelijk uitgehouwen in de aangrenzende berg, omgeven door kliffen. De naam die tegenwoordig gewoonlijk voor het klooster wordt gebruikt, Geghard, of vollediger Geghardavank, wat "het klooster van de speer" betekent, is afkomstig van de speer die Jezus bij de kruisiging had verwond. Er wordt aangenomen dat de speer door Apostel Judas, hier Thaddeus genoemd, naar Armenië is gebracht en tussen vele andere relikwieën is opgeslagen. Nu wordt het weergegeven in de schatkamer van Echmiadzin. Het kloostercomplex staat op de Werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO met een verhoogde beschermingsstatus.
De volgende halte is het basaltorgel, de Stenen Symfonie. De opeenstapeling van natuurlijk geslepen stenen met prachtige symmetrie is een waar natuurwonder en ook onderdeel van het UNESCO Werelderfgoed. De zeshoekige stenen, de een na de ander over de canyon gespannen, zien eruit als een orgel, vandaar de naam.
De tempel, gebouwd in de eerste eeuw en bestond al eeuwen, werd verwoest en stond weer op. Het vertelt over het voorchristelijke Armenië en het Armeense volk. De tempel gewijd aan Mithra, de God van de Zon, is de enige bewaard gebleven heidense tempel zowel in Armenië als op het grondgebied van de voormalige USSR. De tempel werd verwoest door een verwoestende aardbeving in 1679 en werd gerestaureerd voor ongeveer 8 jaar, 1968-75.
De kennismakingstour eindigt met een lavash masterclass, waarbij je ziet hoe het beroemde Armeense brood, lavash, wordt gebakken.

We had a wonderful time on the Garni and Geghard tour. Both sites were beautiful and full of history, making this a great day trip. Symphony of Stones was magical. Our guide, Meri, was friendly, knowledgeable, and shared fascinating information throughout the tour. She made the experience enjoyable and kept everything well organized.
