Balik Pulau is de andere kant van Penang Island, waar weelderig groen gedijt. Omgeven door bergen en de zee, is het de thuisbasis van traditionele Maleise dorpen en vissershavens. Op deze reis nemen we je mee om deze verborgen kant van het eiland te verkennen, traditionele industrieën zoals nootmuskaat- en garnalenpastafabrieken te bezoeken, de traditionele Maleise huizen te bewonderen en natuurlijk de lokale delicatessen te proeven als onderdeel van de ervaring. Ik weet zeker dat het een onvergetelijke plattelandsreis wordt.

Dit is een nootmuskaatfabriek die al tientallen jaren in bedrijf is. Tijdens het bezoek zullen we de nootmuskaatboomgaard verkennen, de nootmuskaatvrucht zien en aan de hand van gedetailleerde uitleg leren over de verschillende voordelen ervan. De fabriek verkoopt ook een verscheidenheid aan nootmuskaatproducten, waardoor bezoekers de perfecte gelegenheid hebben om dit prachtige product in huis te halen.
We zullen genieten van een ontbijt in Balik Pulau, en wat we eten zal afhangen van welke verkopers die dag open zijn. Maar maak je geen zorgen, het is allemaal heerlijke Penang keuken. Na het ontbijt maken we een wandeling door het vissersdorp om de schilderachtige haven, de aangemeerde boten en de ontspannen sfeer te bewonderen die u volledig op uw gemak zullen stellen. Onderweg rijden we langs enkele traditionele Maleise huizen, waar we stoppen voor foto's zodat u de charme van deze zeldzame plattelandservaring kunt vastleggen.
Een andere cottage industrie die we zullen bezoeken is de garnalen pasta fabriek gelegen in Pulau Betong, een klein vissersdorpje in Balik Pulau. We zullen het proces observeren van het maken van belacan (garnalenpasta) en hoe het wordt gedroogd onder de hete zon.Garnalenpasta is een essentieel ingrediënt in veel Maleisische delicatessen."
We zullen de prachtige installatiekunst bewonderen op het rijstveld. Dit is een van de vijf container kunstwerken gevonden in Penang. Het landschap is er zeer Instagrammable - u kunt genieten van het uitzicht op de heuvels die oprijzen in de omgeving en het rijstveld ernaast.
Als je naar Balik Pulau komt, mag je Assam Laksa zeker niet missen. "Assam" betekent tamarinde, en dit gerecht heeft een smaak die uniek is voor Penang. Balik Pulau heeft de verse ingrediënten die nodig zijn voor deze delicatesse, en zelfs de lokale bevolking maakt hier vaak een speciale reis om ervan te genieten. Het is ook door CNN uitgelicht als een van 's werelds beste voedingsmiddelen. Na het proeven van de Laksa gaan we verder met het proberen van een andere Balik Pulau specialiteit: bruine suikerbroodjes.

Margaret was a wonderful guide. She showed us so much of rural Penang and told us all about it. She took loads of photos for us, its so nice to have both of us in photos together! She also encouraged us to try local delicacies, food that we would never have eaten without her suggestions. I would highly recommend this trip.

The morning tour started with breakfast at a traditional café, with a choice of kaya toast or scones, followed by a stop where you could buy local nutmeg products. The tour continued with a scenic viewing point by the water, then to a rice paddy with a painted shipping container and also included a visit to a church. Lunch was Penang laksa. The guide, William, was helpful and knowledgeable. Overall, it was an enjoyable way to experience the countryside around Penang.

James, our guide, is a knowledgeable and diligent guide. We thoroughly enjoyed each sight he showed us, and James prevailed on the experts, like the nutmeg farm owner, to tell us about the places we visited. James went over the call of duty, bringing us to a unique breakfast experience, squeezing an extra visit, and regaling us with stories of the places we passed by as well as entertaining us with interesting tidbits about Penang. Even the Penang-born members of our group learnt so many new interesting facts. We enjoyed ourselves so much we stayed longer than we should, but James was proud to show us his Penang. It was a very interesting tour which included information about agriculture, (nutmeg, palm oil, rice, coconut), history of the area, nature and great food. Jenny always added interesting details. Jenny was a wonderful tour guide.

This trip was wonderful. Jenny our driver guide was very knowledgeable and excited to tell us more about ‘the other side of the island’. Ramadan and Chinese New Year celebrations meant some places were closed but Jenny’s knowledge helped navigate this and create a great experience for us. We got to see the agricultural area and appreciate how this contributes to Penang’s economy. The food stops were delicious and we got to try local food. This is a very special trip where you get to see a very different side of Penang.

We had 2 Adults + 2 Elderly + 2 Kids on the Balik Pulau Day Tour. We particularly enjoyed enjoyed the Peace and Tranquility of the Country Side, especially the Paddy Fields!
