Great half day out with an interesting market tour with Mr Mok who seems to know everyone at the market. Then on to cooking with Amy. We got to participate in a few things like cutting the vegetables for the spring rolls but then Amy, Mok and the helper finished off the “boring” tasks while we moved on to prep for the next dishes. Make sure you come hungry as there’s plenty of food at lunch and you also get a light breakfast before the class starts. Loads of photos, videos and recipes are shared after the class.
Mr Mok and Nonya Amy are very passionate about their heritage and it was a pleasure to let them share it with us. The market tour was interesting and informative which included morning tea and drinks. The food we prepared was delicious. We were provided with the recipes and many great tips for other places to eat and things to do in Penang.
Had a wonderful time at the Penang Chiak cooking session! 🍳✨ What made it extra special was Mok sharing the fascinating history of Chowrasta Market. I honestly didn’t expect the session to include this little piece of Penang’s heritage, and it added so much more meaning to the experience. Amy was fantastic—warm, patient and so good at guiding us through the cooking. The whole session was relaxed, enjoyable and filled with interesting stories, local flavours and plenty of fun. A great way to experience Penang beyond just the food. Highly recommended! ❤️
This was such a funn experience! I really enjoyed the tour, breakfast and cooking class-everyone is so knowledgeable and helpful! Will definitely keep these recipes in mind! It was amazing! 🥳❤️
Mr Mok and Nyonya Amy were very generous sharing their traditions and the Nyonya food. We toured the Market and were given a great insight to the different local foods available and then cooked the most wonderful food including char kuey teow, spring rolls and kapital chicken curry amongst other things. Cannot wait to try on my family and friends when we go home. The class size was 7 which was perfect. Would highly recommend.
We really enjoyed the cooking class and would probably do it again if we came back to pregnant as I think they offer a variety of courses. It was good to learn about the nyonya culture and history. Overall a great experience
This Nyonya cooking class was a highlight of our trip to Penang. We took part as a family of five. The day began meeting Mr Mok who took us to a local market, where we were introduced to the fresh ingredients, herbs and spices that are at the heart of Nyonya cuisine. Was great to see the local traders and Mr Mok’s knowledge, experience and passion were second to none. We also had the chance to sample a traditional local breakfast at the market, which was a lovely addition and gave us an authentic taste of Penang before the cooking even began. Back at the cooking school, we were guided step by step through preparing a selection of traditional Nyonya dishes by Amy. The recipes were authentic, easy to follow and absolutely delicious. Sitting down together at the end to enjoy everything we had made was a lovely way to finish the experience. One thing worth noting is that the experience lasted around six hours in total, including the market visit, breakfast, the cooking class and lunch. This was longer than the description suggested, so it’s worth allowing plenty of time in your day. It was a fantastic hands-on experience that combined great food with local culture, and sharing it together as a family made it even more special. We came away with wonderful memories, new cooking skills and recipes we’ll definitely (try to) be making again at home. If you’re visiting Penang, I can’t recommend this class highly enough. Thank you to the team.
The cooking experience was excellent. Highly recommend and I have done lots of overseas classes. You learn lots more than the offer states. Walk through the markets and tastings can take longer than the advertised time. But if you are on a strict timetable let them know at the very beginning of the tour. Otherwise add an extra hour onto what they say. LeAnne New Zealand
Awesome morning tour. I recommend morning tour so you can see the day market and get the light breakfast. Awesome culture immersion.
We did the Nyonya cooking class. This was not just a culinary experience, it was a cultural immersion too. Amy and Mok were so generous with their personal stories as well as their cooking tips. It was a tightly controlled and carefully paced class. This is one of the best cooking classes I have ever done. I highly recommend it. One tip... don't eat beforehand!
WE ARE GLAD TO HOST YOU! Thank you for showing so much appreciation towards our local culture.
