De vuurtoren is meer dan een eeuw geleden gebouwd en staat hoog tussen enorme granieten rotsblokken en de beukende golven van de krachtige Atlantische Oceaan. Breng tijd door met het verkennen van de schilderachtige omgeving voordat u naar het charmante, actieve vissersdorpje beneden gaat waar u winkels, eetgelegenheden, de William de-Garthe Art Gallery en meer vindt. Je avontuur begint met een schilderachtige rit van Halifax naar Peggy’s Cove, een reis van ongeveer een uur door het prachtige South Shore landschap. Dit is een van de meest rustige maar ook emotionele plekken aan de kust van Nova Scotia. In de nacht van 2 september 1998 reisde Swissair-vlucht 111 van New York naar Genève met 229 mensen aan boord — passagiers en bemanning uit 16 verschillende landen. Rond 22.30 uur, zo'n 8 kilometer van deze ruige kustlijn, stortte het vliegtuig neer in de Atlantische Oceaan na melding van rook in de cockpit. Tragisch genoeg overleefde niemand het. Lokale vissers en redders uit de gemeenschappen van Peggy’s Cove en Blandford waren de eersten die het gebied bereikten. Velen van hen riskeerden die nacht hun leven in ruwe zee, in de hoop te helpen. De zoek- en bergingsoperatie die volgde was een van de grootste in de Canadese geschiedenis. Dit gedenkteken — gebouwd door de regering van Canada — werd ontworpen om de nagedachtenis van alle 229 zielen te eren en om de lokale bewoners te bedanken die steun en compassie verleenden tijdens de herstelpoging.
Titanic Grave Side. (Begraafplaats Fairview Lawn) Dit is Fairview Lawn Cemetery, rustplaats van 121 slachtoffers van de RMS Titanic. Halifax kwam centraal te staan in het Titanic-verhaal omdat het de dichtstbijzijnde grote haven was van de rampplek. Toen bergingsschepen deze haven in april 1912 verlieten, brachten ze 209 lichamen terug. Velen zijn nooit geïdentificeerd. Hier ziet u de eenvoudige grijze granieten markers — sommige met namen, andere alleen met een nummer en de datum 15 april 1912. De graven zijn gerangschikt in een lichte curve, bedoeld om te lijken op de boeg van een schip, symboliseert de Titanic zelf. Een van de meest ontroerende verhalen is dat van het ‘Onbekende Kind’, wiens graf je vlak voor je ziet. Tientallen jaren wist niemand wie hij was. Moderne DNA-testen identificeerden hem later als Sidney Leslie Goodwin, een 19 maanden oude uit Engeland.

The young man that was our tour guide was very nice, but it was very difficult to understand his accent. He is obviously not a local person and knows very little about the area. He did not seem to know his way around or direct us to what we wanted to see or stop at for lunch. We ended up cutting it short and going directly back to where we had started. It was very unfortunate, but I cannot recommend this tour.

We had a wonderful experience visiting Peggy‘s Cove with Neda. She was so knowledgeable about the whole area of Halifax and was very informative throughout our entire drive. She even answered all of our questions when we saw things that grabbed our attention. . When it was time for lunch she had great recommendations and even showed us a nice place that was less busy than the tourist spots. We had a group of 7 adults, and we were very comfortable in the minivan. Everyone in our group was impressed and we would highly recommend this tour.
