Begeef je op een exclusieve reis door de tijd en onthul oude locaties, cruciale slagvelden en iconische kastelen die de essentie van de Schotse Hooglandencultuur samenvatten. Deze privétour begint 4000 jaar geleden in Clava Cairns. Dit is een mystieke plaats van aanbidding, begrafenis en opoffering. Er zijn vergelijkingen gemaakt met 'Craig na Dun'. Bij 'Culloden Battlefield' neem ik je mee op een rondleiding door 'ground zero' voor de manier van leven en cultuur in de hooglanden. Deze ervaring zal je uitleggen hoe Schotland er vroeger uitzag, wat er gebeurde en hoe het nu is. Verder naar 'Cawdor Castle. Dit is een indrukwekkend 15e-eeuws torenhuis en werd genoemd in Shakespeares toneelstuk Macbeth. (In het winterseizoen, van oktober tot april, wordt een alternatief voor Urquhart Castle aangeboden.) De middag is meer ontspannen, met een mooie rit langs Loch Ness voor een monsterjacht. Vervolgens verlaat u de boerderij van Robertson in Beauly om de inheemse Highland Cows te zien.

Dit prachtige dorp ligt ten westen van Inverness, met koninklijke wortels en fascinerende bezienswaardigheden. Volgens de legende zei Mary, de koningin van Schotland, dat een bezoek aan het koningshuis zei: “C’est un beau lieu” toen ze de stad voor het eerst zag, en de naam “Beau Lieu” is sindsdien blijven hangen!
Bezoekers trekken massaal naar Loch Ness, in de hoop een glimp op te vangen van het ongrijpbare en gelijknamige monster, Loch Ness. Dit meer in de Schotse Hooglanden is de reis waard, zelfs als je de geruchten niet gelooft. Loch Ness is uitgestrekt en omgeven door een prachtig Schots landschap en is een populaire vaar- en bezienswaardigheidsplek.
De Clava Cairns – of de prehistorische grafsteenhopen van Balnuaran van Clava – zijn het enige dat overblijft van wat ooit een veel groter grafcomplex uit de Bronstijd was. De suggestieve begraafplaats dateert van 4000 jaar en heeft zijn originele kenmerken behouden, waaronder doorgangsgraven, staande stenen en ringsteenmannetjes (steencirkels).
Het slagveld van Culloden was de locatie van een van de laatste veldslagen die op Britse bodem plaatsvond. Op 16 april 1746 stonden Bonnie Prince Charlie en zijn leger van 5.000 Jacobitische Hooglanders tegenover de hertog van Cumberland en 9.000 Hannoveraanse regeringstroepen. Hoewel de Jacobieten dapper vochten, werden ze uiteindelijk verslagen, wat resulteerde in de eliminatie van het Schotse clansysteem en de onderdrukking van de Highland-cultuur. Tegenwoordig vertelt het Culloden Battlefield Visitor Centre de gebeurtenissen van die noodlottige dag opnieuw via interactieve tentoonstellingen die reizigers midden in de actie plaatsen.
Een romantisch sprookjeskasteel dat sinds 1370 de thuisbasis is van de Thanes van Cawdor. Cawdor is uitgegroeid tot een charmant familiehuis en de meest opmerkelijke statige huizen. De dramatische middeleeuwse toren, kerker, torentjes, kantelen en ophaalbrug verhullen een betoverend interieur van beeldende kunst, wandtapijten en meubels die het warme en gastvrije gevoel van een huis creëren in plaats van een museum. Het kasteel, gelegen op een prachtig terrein met drie prachtige en gevarieerde tuinen, wordt omgeven door het prachtige Cawdor Big Wood, een van de mooiste bosgebieden van Europa, vol met kleurgecodeerde natuurpaden om te verkennen. Amy makes Scotland come alive, her knowledge of the history of Scotland and its rich heritage comes alive. Amy thinks of everything along with everyone’s comfort being met. Her new van is so spacious and comfortable better than flying any day! Would definitely book another tour.
The day was perfect! Amy was so thoughtful. She was full of knowledge and made the trip an excellent experience She even brought us snacks for us to enjoy during the tour.
Amy organized a bespoke whisky tour with stops at two distilleries. Because of her superb planning, she was able to add in a third distillery! Amy is a safe driver, knowledgeable guide, and great conversationalist. I cannot recommend her enough.
Absolutely brilliant day out. Amy's knowledge of the history of Scotland is contagious. Amy made the Culloden battlefield come alive with her story telling and passion for Scotland. I went as a child to Culloden but returning as an adult was sobering and reflective. I would 100 percent recommend Atom Tours, ps loved the Scottish snacks she gave us!
We had a wonderful day with Amy as our tour guide. Highlights were visiting Clara cairns and the Culloden battlefield. Amy took me and some friends on a surprise OUTLANDER tour for my birthday and packed the day with surprises from start to finish - even the complimentary single malt on departure! All along the way, we were mesmerised by the tales, stories and history of Scotland and in-depth comparisons with the Outlander narrative. Stopping off in Forres, before arriving at Glen Ord Distillery for a tour and to fill my very own bottle of Cask Strength Singleton, before heading to The Priory in Beully, then Loch Ness for some Nessy spotting, then onto a private lunch at The Loch Ness Country House, then onto Culloden Battlefield for the best insight into the horrors and complications of that sad day in history and then on to the Pictish Cairns at Cawdor before being dropped of exactly on time for evening dinner in Elgin! - Timings were to military perfection - Banter was of the scale - Attention to detail was above and beyond! Loved it all and would highly recommend!
I booked this tour thru Tours by Locals website and choose Amy and her company, and I am so happy that I did. Amy picked us up promptly at scheduled time and explained to us the itinerary for our day. Even though I booked the Outlander Experience I was the only one in my family who even watched Outlander!! We went to Clava Cairns, Culloden, Cawdor Castle (definitely eat lunch at the cafe there-So good!), Loch Ness, went up into the Highlands and ended with seeing some Highland Coos! The enthusiasm and love of her country is evident when Amy is sharing the Scottish history with us. I loved how she built the story for us throughout the day of everywhere we visited. She is an incredible storyteller and historian. I felt like I was in my favorite history class. You know when someone can make you see the history in your mind, they are great! Amy does just that! She kept us timely without making us feel rushed and she is a very good driver and keeps everyone safe! I especially loved the trip up the road in the Highlands where we stopped for a bit and she shared (she did not drink any) a wee bit of Scottish Whiskey from her hometown with my brother in laws and myself. When I come back again, I will not hesitate to book another tour with Amy! You should too!! Thank you, Amy, and what a delightful person and excellent historian you are!!
