U wandelt door vergeten steegjes, betreedt koloniale herenhuizen en ambachtelijke binnenplaatsen die meestal gesloten zijn voor het publiek. Onder leiding van culturele verhalenvertellers is elk detail, van de mozaïektegels die je aanraakt tot de chai waaraan je nipt, ontworpen om filmisch, intiem en scriptloos aan te voelen. Beperkt tot acht gasten per vertrek, is het minder een rondleiding en meer een levend archief van de geheimen van de stad.

Armanitola wijk van de Armeniërs biedt een fascinerende blik in de rijke, multiculturele geschiedenis van Dhaka. Tijdens de 17e en 18e eeuw migreerden Armeense kooplieden naar Bengalen, en vestigden een bloeiende gemeenschap in wat nu bekend staat als Armanitola, een bruisende wijk in Oud-Dhaka. De Armeniërs brachten hun unieke cultuur, zakelijk inzicht en tradities met zich mee, wat aanzienlijk bijdroeg aan de economie van Dhaka, vooral in de handel en textiel.
Het Ruplal House is een historisch herenhuis gelegen langs de oevers van de Buriganga rivier in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Gebouwd in de late 19e eeuw door twee rijke kooplieden, Ruplal Das en zijn broer Raghunath Das, het huis toont een elegante mix van Europese en Mughal bouwstijlen. Het herenhuis was ooit een symbool van weelde en beschikt over grote zalen, ingewikkeld houtsnijwerk en ruime binnenplaatsen. Ondanks de huidige vervallen staat, blijft Ruplal House een belangrijk cultureel en historisch oriëntatiepunt, als weerspiegeling van de grootsheid van het koloniale verleden van Dhaka en het rijke erfgoed van de handelsklasse van de stad
Northbrook Hall, gelegen in Dhaka, is een historisch gebouw gebouwd tijdens de Britse koloniale periode. Vernoemd naar Lord Northbrook, de onderkoning van India, werd het in 1881 ingehuldigd als stadhuis en cultureel centrum. De architectuur van Northbrook Hall weerspiegelt de koloniale stijl met zijn elegante design en decoratieve elementen. In de loop der jaren heeft het verschillende doelen gediend, waaronder het hosten van sociale evenementen, culturele programma's en openbare bijeenkomsten. Vandaag de dag staat Northbrook Hall symbool voor het rijke koloniale erfgoed van Dhaka en blijft het een belangrijke locatie voor culturele en gemeenschapsactiviteiten.

My husband and I loved discovering Old Dhaka’s hidden gems. The tour was well-paced for us as seniors, with time to rest and enjoy. The food tastings were delicious, and the stories brought the city’s history alive. A thoughtful, memorable experience we’ll always cherish.

I've been on two tours in Old Dhaka with Secrets Bangladesh (I brought my friends one time and husband the other), and would recommend it to anyone! It's easy to communicate with the team, and our guide Sarfaraz (Edward) was knowledgeable, fun and easygoing.Only point to improve was that they did not check whether Lalbagh was open on the day or not. We drove there, and it was closed. It's still a must to elevate your understanding of both Dhaka and Bangladesh 🇧🇩

Living in Dhaka, I did experience old Dhaka a few times, but never like this or in such detail. Mishak and his team are doing an excellent job. We got to see most of the heritage buildings and learn the history. They are very very thorough at what they do. Also very professional. We walked through many alleys with rich history, the spice market, banks of the Buriganga river and was lucky to be able to go up to a few rooftops and balconies with incredible views; which ARE the ‘secrets’ of Dhaka. I would suggest this for everybody, old and young, foreign or local. Sadly, we couldn’t do the food tour, or try any food places as we were short on time. Wear comfortable shoes, and that’s all you need! The rest will be taken care of by the team of SecretsBangladesh! Loved every bit and wasn’t bored for a minute. Thank you Secrets! 🙏

We visited some sites that are hardly covered within general tours but have very unique stories and meaning. Highlights were the visit to hidden architectural marvels and trying local delicacies from special cafes that I’d never find alone.
