Meteora is een gebied dat enkele vierkante kilometer omvat en waar een oude gemeenschap in een kloosternederzetting in harmonie samenleeft met het zeldzame geologisch fenomeen van de enorme pilaren. Meteora bevindt zich op de noordwestelijke punt van de vlakte van Thessalië en is vandaag de dag uitgegroeid tot een van de populairste bestemmingen van het vasteland van Griekenland. Deze locatie staat op de Werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO, een archeologische vindplaats die officieel is uitgeroepen tot heilige locatie! Aan de voet van de rotsen bevinden zich twee nederzettingen, namelijk de stad Kalabaka en het plaatsje Kastraki.
Wandel door het majestueuze 'rotsbos' van Meteora, bekijk de mooiste kloosters en ervaar de meest betoverende uitzichten tijdens deze ochtendtour. De wandeltocht door Meteora is een van de beste manieren om te genieten van dit unieke geologische fenomeen en om meer te weten te komen over de geschiedenis van deze locatie die op de werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO staat. Tijdens uw deelname aan deze ochtendwandeling loopt u door verborgen paden die alleen bekend zijn bij de lokale bewoners. Laat ons u meenemen op een reis terug in de tijd in de voetsporen van de eerste monniken die hier meer dan 15 eeuwen geleden arriveerden. Neem deel aan deze fantastische begeleide wandeltocht, loop langs de gigantische pilaren van Meteora en geniet van de adembenemende uitzichten.
Het Great Meteoron Monastery (Groot Metereon) is het grootste en oudste. Dit klooster lijkt in de lucht te hangen (meteoro), vanwege de vorm van de gigantische rots waarop het werd gebouwd. Het Groot Metereon werd gesticht door Sint-Athanasios de Meteoriet, de eerste grondlegger van het klooster en oprichter van de systematische koenovion. Om deze reden wordt de stichting van dit klooster beschouwd als een keerpunt, of beter nog, het begin van het georganiseerde monnikenleven in het Heilige Meteora. Hosios Athanasios werd geboren rond 1302 in de middeleeuwse stad Nieuw-Patras, vandaag de dag Hypati. Zijn lekennaam was Andronikos.
Dit klooster is volledig gebouwd op een grote inham van een rots en is zeer toonagevend voor zijn soort, vergeleken met de kloosters die meestal gezien worden op de toppen van de rotsen. Een monnik onder de naam Nilos werd in het jaar 1367 AD, samen met een andere monnik genaamd Cyprianus, de oprichter van het klooster. Het klooster werd verwoest in 1809, toen de lokale rebel en held Papathymios Vlahavas hier werd gearresteerd door het Turkse leger van Ali Pasha. Het pad naar het klooster is heel eenvoudig en aangenaam.
Het Heilige Klooster van Varlaam is het op een na grootste klooster. Het bevindt zich tegenover het Grote Meteoro Klooster en het werd opgericht in het midden van de 14e eeuw door Hosios Varlaam. Het elegante klooster Catholicon werd gebouwd ter ere van Agioi Pantes in 1541-42, door twee broers uit Ioannina en de priester-monniken Hosioi Theophanes en Nectarios de Apsarades. De grote kerk werd ingericht in 1548. Op basis van stilistische criteria, is de prachtige muurschildering toegekend aan de beroemde hagiograaf Frago Catelano uit Thebe.
Het Heilige klooster van Sint-Nicolaas van Anapafsas is het eerste klooster dat we tegenkomen op weg naar de Heilige Meteora; dit klooster werd opgericht aan het einde van de 14e eeuw. Voor de naam Anapafsas zijn talloze interpretaties, waarvan er twee het populairst zijn. De eerste is dat de naam Anapafsas werd toegeschreven aan één van de begunstigers van het klooster, terwijl de tweede verklaring te maken heeft met de positie van het klooster: het klooster is het eerste op het pad en fungeerde voor de pelgrims en andere bezoekers waarschijnlijk als rustplaats voordat ze verder gingen.

Chris led our group on this hike and it was my favourite experience in Meteora! Beautiful countryside and views of the monasteries and the hike was fairly easy, some steep and slippery spots but it was a perfect experience if you love hiking and nature as well as the stunning views, and want to visit the largest monastery as well.

We did a hike to The Great Meteoron Monastery with our guide Christos, and it was absolutely amazing. Christos gave personal attention to everyone in the group and was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about what he does. It was a magical half-day walk into a dreamlike landscape of colors, scents, shapes, and history. The trail network is vast, like a natural maze—definitely something you shouldn’t explore without a local guide, as it’s easy to get lost. Our guide Chris was fluent in English, kind, and very knowledgeable, answering every question with ease. The trail itself was easy, yet offered breathtaking views throughout.
