Meteora bedekt enkele vierkante kilometer. Een oude kloostergemeenschap en een zeldzaam geologische fenomeen van enorme rotsachtige pilaren bestaan naast elkaar in absolute harmonie. Meteora bevindt zich op het noordwestelijke punt van de vlakte van Thessalië en is uitgegroeid tot een van de populairste bestemmingen in Griekenland. De stad staat op de werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO, het is een archeologische locatie en het is officieel uitgeroepen tot een heilige plaats! Aan de voet van de rotsen zijn twee nederzettingen, namelijk de stad Kalabaka en het plaatsje Kastraki.
Het is een kerk die iedereen moet hebben gezien. Niet alleen vanwege haar leeftijd en kostbare 11e-eeuwse Byzantijnse fresco's, maar ook vanwege het materiaal waar de muren van zijn gemaakt. Overblijfselen van een oude Griekse tempel die aan de god Apollo was gewijd zijn in de muur te zien. Binnen kan men de oudere mozaïeken vloer bewonderen die op bepaalde plekken te zien is onder de huidige vloer. Dit is absoluut een van de meest kostbare oude christelijke basilieken in Griekenland en dient nog steeds als een kerk voor de bewoners.
Dit is het meest toegankelijke klooster, waarbij u gewoon over een kleine brug naar de ingang kunt lopen, in plaats van een trap op te moeten. Dit is ideaal voor bezoekers die geen trappen op kunnen, maar wel een echt klooster in Meteora willen zien. Aan het begin van de 12e eeuw begonnen mensen voor het eerst in kloosters op de rots van Agios Stephanos te leven. Hosios Antonios, in de eerste helft van de 15e eeuw, en Hosios Philotheos, die het fundament van deze kerk gebruikte om het oude, kleine en elegante Catholicon te bouwen in 1545, worden gezien als de oprichters van de huidige Agios Stephanos kerk.
Het Mega Meteoronklooster is het grootste en oudste klooster dat er is. Het wordt het klooster dat ‘in de lucht zweeft’ (meteoro) genoemd vanwege de gigantische rotsformatie waar het op is gebouwd. De oprichting van dit klooster wordt daarom als het keerpunt, of beter nog als het beginpunt van het georganiseerde monachisme in het heilige Meteora, beschouwd.

Het Rousanouklooster kreeg de naam van wat waarschijnlijk de eerste kluizenaar was die zich op de rots had gevestigd. De belangrijkste kathedraal werd aan het eind van de 16de eeuw gesticht en werd dertig jaar later ingericht. In vergelijking met andere rotsen waar kloosters op werden gebouwd, was het Roussanouklooster minder hoog, waardoor het beter toegankelijk is. Het klooster werd oorspronkelijk door monniken gesticht en werd zwaar beschadigd tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. In 1988 werd het een nonnenklooster.
Het Varlaäm-klooster is het tweede grootste klooster. Het bevindt zich tegenover het Mega Meteoronklooster en werd halverwege de 14e eeuw opgericht door de exercitant Hosios Varlaam. Het elegante klooster Catholicon werd ter ere van Agioi Pantes in 1541-42 gebouwd door twee broers uit Ioannina, de priester-monniken Hosioi Theophanes en Nectarios de Apsarades. De grote kerk werd in 1548 ingericht. Op basis van stilistische criteria is deze prachtige muurschildering gemaakt door Frago Catelano, een beroemde hagiograaf uit Thebe.

I pre-booked my sunset tour from Kalambaka via booking dot com but also pooped into the office to check few things and the lady there was so nice and helpful. On the day, they were so busy that a small group was created for the 6 of us with Chris (the best tour guide of all!!!) and we had a great time with him. He's shown us hidden places, he knew the answer to every question we had. And he is a great driver and a awesome person! But all the people I met (and I have met quite a few other guys who work there) were so accommodating and nice! I'd highly recommend this trip and company for anyone (couples / solo travellers) and from anywhere (Kalambaka, Thessaloniki, Athens) and their website is full of useful info about the monasteries and hiking routes (that's how I planned my stay + solo hikes and in 3 days, I visited all the monestaries) if you are planning to book a trip, look no further: choose the best!

This tour was fantastic, we all learned so much about the area from our tour guide, Chris: the history (both old & recent), the mythology, geology, religion, and local greek culture. Chris is incredibly well spoken, extremely knowledgable, keeps his audience interested, and he was lots of fun! We visited a monastery or two on our own, which was wonderful, and at the end he then gave us a personal tour of a special church to understand the meanings of what was inside. The mini-van was very comfortable; had a great driver and lots of special photo opportunities along the way. The staff at Visit Meteora were very helpful and flexible when I needed to change my pick up location at the last minuted. It all went smoothly. Chris provided personal service, asking for questions, engaging us in the talk, and even shared a bit of her personal life as he is from the area. Even gave some restaurant and Greek food recommendations! We all started out as strangers on the tour, but become friends, even if for a day, by the end of our tour. Dimitri/Jim was an exceptional guide. He is originally from Kalabaka and his deep love for Meteora and the surrounding region was present in every story he shared.
