Op een rotsachtige heuvel die moeilijk toegankelijk is, aan de oevers van de rivier de Darro, beschermd door bergen en omgeven door bossen, tussen de oudste wijken van de stad, rijst het Alhambra op als een imposant kasteel met roodachtige tinten in zijn wallen die voorkomen dat de buitenwereld de delicate schoonheid ziet die ze omsluiten. Oorspronkelijk ontworpen als militair gebied, werd het Alhambra in het midden van de dertiende eeuw de residentie van de koninklijke macht en van het hof van Granada, na de oprichting van het koninkrijk Nasrid en de bouw van het eerste paleis, door de stichter koning Mohammed ibn Yusuf ben Nasr, beter bekend als Alhamar. Het fort werd een citadel met hoge wallen en verdedigingstorens, die twee belangrijke gebieden huisvesten: het militaire gebied, of Alcazaba, de kazerne van de koninklijke garde, en de medina of hofstad, de locatie van de beroemde paleizen van Nasrid en de overblijfselen van de huizen van edellieden en plebejers die er woonden.
Generalife bestaat uit een reeks grote tuinen met steeds weer wat nieuws en aangename verrassingen om te zien, met nauwelijks gebouwen die in de weg staan.
Het Alcazaba had puur een militaire functie. De ingang van het Alcazaba lag aan de voet van de Toren van Eerbetoon (Torre del Homenaje). Aan de voet van de toren bevindt zich een lichte helling. Een eenvoudige L-vormige loopbrug zorgt ervoor dat de hoofdingang niet zichtbaar is van buitenaf.
De gewone verblijfplaats van de koningen van Granada, hun bouw begon aan het begin van de 14e eeuw. De paleizen van Nasrid zijn een paleiscomplex dat bestaat uit drie gebouwen : - De Mexuar is de oudste hal. Het werd gebruikt voor vergaderingen tussen de ministers van de koning en als rechtszaal. - Vervolgens komen we bij het Paleis van Comares, dat dateert uit het tijdperk van Yusuf I. Deze woning werd gebouwd rond de Patio DE los Arrayanes (binnenplaats van de Myrtles), en de si DE uitgangen leiden naar de Sala DE los Embajadores (Zaal van Ambassadeurs) en de Sala de la Barca (Zaal van de Boot). - Het Paleis van de Leeuwen, daterend uit het tijdperk van Mohammed V, is ook een koninklijke residentie. Het bestaat uit een centrale binnenplaats, de binnenplaats van de leeuwen, en zalen langs elke kant, de zaal van de Mocarabe, de zaal van de koningen, de zaal van de twee zusters, de zaal van de Ajimeces, die leidt naar het uitkijkpunt mirador Daraxa, en de zaal van de Abencerrajes, samen met de Harem

I liked the easy access and self-pacing. I expect a personal guide would have provided more color, but this provided a good overview of the facts and history of the site.

The Map was not easy to read. Some of the tracks were closed. The price we paid was higher than it would be if we paid at the entrance directly. But still we enjoyed it very much. It is a lot to walk and good shoes are a must. As we were there it was 40 degrees but lots of possibilities to get water, even water fountains are on the path through the Alhambra. Overall a great experience for everyone.

The staff at the meeting point were great , polite, patient and well organized.. the setup for our timed visit to the Nasrid palace was perfect. It is entirely worthy !! but … We just didn’t enjoyed the audioguide. Unable to set it loud enough to cover the ambient noise . Also It was hard to follow / match where we were with the audioguide , because a lot of room looked the same… But personally, I would not take a fully guided tour with a group, that would be too painful for me .

I’d highly recommend the palaces. Google this to get the official site (trip advisor blocks sharing links) alhambra-patronato.es The .org site that is the second hit on Google is 3-4x the actual price — which is about 22 euro in June 2026

The Alhambra is an absolutely stunning place and one of the highlights of our trip to Spain. The palaces, gardens, and incredible architecture are truly breathtaking. Everything inside the complex is well worth visiting, and we had an amazing experience once we got in. The only issue was the ticket collection process. We booked through Tripadvisor, with the tour operated by GRANAVISIÓN – Movviendo Tourism Group. The booking instructions were not clear that the tickets needed to be collected from the operator's office rather than the official Alhambra ticket office. We went to the Alhambra ticket office first and then had to find the operator's office, which was stressful and took extra time. Despite this inconvenience, the Alhambra itself is magnificent and absolutely worth visiting. Just make sure you know exactly where to collect your tickets before you go.

Site to visit absolutely, magnificent. Audioguide clearly audible in French, but the explanations were not precise enough during the movements. Beautiful experience nonetheless. Majestic Nasrid Palace.
